I wouldn't go as far, but I think that our transfer strategy last summer was not great. Hopefully, we will improve on that aspect and pay absurd amount of money only for top notch players. For the others, look cheaper.
That is why I think it would be a total idiocy to spend 60-70m on Grealish. There are cheaper alternatives who are every bit as good outside of England. On the other hand, pay as much as needed for Sancho (or if someone like Mbappe suddenly becomes available).

I'd try to get a CB more and try again with Scott and Fred for the DM role. Scott can learn from Matic, it's just that he's forgetting the moves sometimes. With a lot of work and abnegation he can make it work though, he has the mental strength for it. The benefit would be that he's an academy graduate, he's English, and he will bring some fighting spirit on the pitch that will be useful against some teams.
A CB to pair with Maguire and help us find the right balance between physical impact and distribution from behind when the game is stuck is something we need, also as a way to bypass the high press we will be subject to more and more often.
We are 6 player short to be a genuine contender. Considering how we do transfer business over the years, 3 will be this year and 3 next summer. Sancho, rotational option for Pogba and Bruno and a holding midfielder who is suitable pair to the Bruno and Pogba will be my priority. Matic should be limited to game a week and the new guy could be bed in as rotational option and taking over from Matic as first choice in a year time. In the mean time we should get a good loan for Garner with the view of him integrating in the squad after that to provide competition and cover for the holding midfield role.
We can't sell everyone we might want to. Jones won't leave, he'll retire with us.

So we tried to sign Dutch CB who asked us to feck off, one of Argentina's best attacker fell in our laps and we tried to sign him who again asked us to feck off but somehow our strategy was xenophobic. Maybe they all attended some training session to learn about globalization so we signed Portuguese player in Jan and also Nigerian striker on loan.
To make it worse it was Norwegian who was xenophobic
It depends who we want. Sancho? We are getting him for sure, it's getting too much noise now. I think Graelish will be too expensive, unless he makes some noise and begs Aston Villa to let him go. The rest? No idea. All we can do is trust Ole to make the right choices football wise.
We need to add from a position of strength.
I dont know what people are saying but Grealish will be an excellent addition to the group if we can afford. It gives us depth in both the front 3 and midfield. He wont need time to adapt and we need to start the season on fire. The only way to beat this is adding Thiago and Sarr to the team which will cover for that but that will be at the risk of increasing the wage bill.
Sancho, Grealish, Neves and Kabak/Dayot will be an excellent addition this summer.

We will defintely get at least double the ridiculously low fee you quoted for Lingard. He will fetch close to $20mil from Newcastle or West Ham easily
We really shouldn’t be buying a “weaker” anything if looking to compete. Injuries happen! It’ll be interesting to see how far Ole trusts Fred and McTominay going into next season.
We’d do well to get Sancho and VDB for £150m, hopefully cash raised through player sales could get us enough for a decent centre back.
Im not sure VDB would want to come here if we have pogba and bruno.

I agree that this is probably our most important transfer window. And I think we are all in agreement that we're targeting/getting Sancho, a quick CB to partner Maguire, and a CM/AM. In addition, pretty sure we'll get rid of the deadweights as well.

We need to have our best window in terms of getting the right player for us. Hurts me to say this, but I'd like to draw an example from Liverpool in this regard. This is an area where they have particularly excelled past 3-4 seasons - they have been extremely smart in their scouting and player assessment before buying them.
Look at how they gradually built this team over the past 4 seasons, and kept improving with each phase. Almost all the transfers can be considered as a success.
Phase 1 - 2016/17: Mane, Wijnaldum
End of season: 4th in PL.
Phase 2 - 2017/18: VVD, Salah, Oxlade, Robertson
End of Season: UCL Finalist. 4th in PL again, but solidified that position.
Phase 3 - 2018/19: Allison, Keita, Fabinho, Shaqiri
End of Season: UCL Winners. 2nd in PL, 1pt behind City.
We have to improve bit by bit, exactly like Liverpool. Look at which positions they targeted in phase 2 (CB, RW, CM, RB) and look at which positions we are targeting now (RW, CB, and CM). 7 of these 10 players are first team regulars and form the core of their EPL and UCL winning team.
Obviously, we have gotten a few players right in the last window i.e. Bruno, AWB, Maguire. And safe to say after last night, we have entered phase 2 which is why this window quite critical for our rebuild. We need this window (and January) to get all the necessary jigsaw pieces together and build a team which will challenge for 2nd. It is not practical to expect that we will definitely be challenging for the title next season. If we do, then great... but solidifying a top 3 should be a priority, not the title.
We cannot afford to have flops anymore. We need our transfers to settle in quickly and deliver. Once they do that over the next season and we improve our consistency, only then can we look back at the team and again realise what the final pieces are.
Since we have finally taken a step in the right direction, we have to keep building on it. We need to get the players who will get us from phase 2 to phase 3, where we can challenge for title in 2021/22. We are currently 5-6 players short of that (incl. first team and back up). Sancho is a must but a left back rather than a centre back is a necessity in my opinion. Williams is a right back. The trouble with playing him and Rashford on the left is they both cut inside and the attacks stall. A fast, left footed full back is needed, someone that can overlap and cross a ball. Then replacing like for like with those that leave; Pereira, Mata, Lingard, Jones, Rojo.

Agreed, maybe we could look at Koopmeiners or Zakaria then VDB as an alternative to Grealish and back Tuanzebe to come good as a CB cause I think bringing Smalling back is step backward with regard to how we want to progress tactically.

How are people making £100-150m budget stretch so far!? Sancho on his own would wipe that out!
No club would pay £40m or anywhere near that for De Gea anymore. His wages aside he’s been an unreliable keeper for 2 consecutive seasons now.

A- most transfers are paid in installments. So a 100m fee will probably cost us 40m in the first year with 20m per year for the next 3 years
B- we will be selling players.
Decent goalkeepers are on demand. I think 30m-40m for DDG is possible if we act quickly

Why would people want another attacking midfielder? Bruno is first choice, Pogba will slot in nicely if needed, there is also Mara (he's worth keeping IMO). This is far from being our priority.
The question as to whether he is even decent anymore is one to argue after the last 2 years but regardless his wages are £300k+ a week so I don’t see any club wanting to take those on and fork out £30-40m for the pleasure given how shaky he’s looked again. Even yesterday he fumbled what was essentially a pass from Iheancho.
An unproven GK like Onana is going for 40m. DDG had been the EPL best keeper for years. He had a shaky 1 year or so but that can be attributed to many factors. The fact is that he is a big name signing who is 29 year old and who play in a football world were top goalkeepers are virtually not existent. Goalkeepers don't become shit at his age

That in mind, we should now just go with the mindset of getting the absolute best younger players available. If we can bring in Sancho, that’s a top class player sorted for a decade. If we add to the current crop at the rate of two world-class young talents a year plus supplement with good squad players (and the odd star) from our own Academy we will be very well set.
