He's very good but we'll be quoted a nine-figure sum for him - there's simply no value there and we need to look elsewhere.
He’s 21 years old, there’s definitely value there if it means 10 years of quality service and contributes towards us being the best team in England again.

Not for £100m+. Our need is not currently great enough, his profile is not a perfect fit and we have higher priority concerns elsewhere (eg a striker). All things considered, Caicedo would be a stupid purchase this summer.

If we don't sign him then we'll be kicking ourselves for the next decade as he runs one of our rivals midfields. Break the bank, not only to get him, but to prevent Arsenal or Liverpool or City signing him.

It is though, we’ve dropped plenty of points this season because of our lack of quality cover for Casemiro, and he can occupy the 8 position too replacing McFred at once. It also prevents the likes of Arsenal signing him, who already has Partey by the way, thus strengthening us and weakening them theoretically.

We can sign both as long as we sell the likes of Maguire, McTominay and Henderson.

Haha yeah. I'd love him to replace Casemiro and I think he has elite potential as the CDM with his defensive work but don't see how he's going to work next to Casemiro. I'd much rather prefer someone like Frenkie de Jong or Enzo Le Fée and I think Ten Hag would also want a similar type next to a destroyer type.
Imo, the perfect set up would be
Caicedo De Jong
Bruno

I agree we need cover at #6 - McTominay isn't good enough. But £100m+ on cover? He can play at #8 but given that Casemiro is first choice at #6 and Bruno isn't great at ball retention, I'd prioritise a top level passer/ball progresser at #8 and "make do" with a lower cost alternative to Caicedo as our backup option at #6.

I think the point of Caicedo is not just to be back up to Casemiro, but also do the #8 role you mention to. And before you say he can’t, he plays the role already for one of the most progressive teams in the country / Europe with weaker players around him.

Personally I think he’d be our best option assuming De Jong is a non-starter. Very different player to De Jong, but there aren’t many players of De Jong’s style and quality, so IMO Caicedo would add as much value to the team, just in a slightly different capacity. The difference with signing De Jong is we would definitely need to still sign DM cover for Casemiro, whereas Caicedo could allow us to be our sole MF signing.

The other option for me would be Ugarte at Sporting who’s a similar profile to Caicedo and would be a fair bit cheaper, and then sign another more advanced 8 as well with the money saved.

I'd prefer the latter option, personally. This team is short of top quality passers, particularly when Eriksen/Martinez are out. Caicedo is great, but passing/progressing the ball is not where his main strengths lie. We have limited budget and, in my view, would benefit from adding two midfielders. I'd favour going with a lower cost option to backup Casemiro, which potentially leaves us with enough room in the budget for passer at #8.

Only seen him a few times. But I remembered playing against us he ran our midfielders off the park all game.

I always kick myself with transfers while Ole was at the wheel, what was the reason we didn't sign him for 5m again?

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. I feel Brighton accept an 80m bid for him during the summer as in January they had no replacement for him in place. We need that type of energy and athleticism in the middle of the park.

The manager doesn't trust Fred, plus he gives the ball away far too often. We can get 30m for him as much as I like him, he players to ordinary and hasn't been good enough overall.

Cover for a year or two, the heart of our midfield for the following 6-8 years.

We cannot let him go to a rival in the Premier league, ever if it means signing him a summer sooner than we need to.

Personally I think he could allow Casemiro to play slightly further forward where I'm convinced he'd still be top class.

If I could pick one guaranteed signing for United this summer it would be Moises

Surely Arsenal will go for him again considering they did in the window gone by

Maybe but I think they’ll go for Declan Rice first and if they fail to land him then try for Caicedo again. I don’t think they’re on the best of terms with Brighton after trying to sign him the last time so hopefully that works against them.

Yeah hopefully

This guy is trouble. We should stay clear.

Thing is for him Tchouaméni at Madrid plays in his position. Caicedo is not a replacement for kroos or modric, long term. He's more like a young kante than a sublime passer or schemer.

For us he'd be a stand in for casemiro or deployed alomgside him in a double pivot that would be defensively very stong. But id rather see a top elite CM who can alternate with ericsson alongside casemiro. Its so obvious when ericsson isnt playing we dont have anyone who can control the tempo and just keep the ball recycling.

If you could guarantee him becoming a mainstay in our first 11 for a decade 100m is exactly right. We spend 70m on flops so I’d take the former ideal scenario every time! He’d never be a stupid purchase for a team whose midfield is one player injury away from being garbage once again. Spending 100m or similar and still not nailing down the position is stupid. We need a striker of course…and a goal keeper…and more but top young proven PL players coming in like him are not stupid moves.

It’ll forever be a dream with Tchouameni and Camavinga taking his position for them. We should still go after him, he’s the answer to Ten Hag’s away game woes.

“But he’s a United fan, should be easy to get him”.

Modern footballers in a nutshell; whatever financial package is biggest, in front of the most fans, at the highest level of football possible is the goal for players and agents.

Cucurella’s “dream” was to play for Manchester City. When they didn’t pay enough, his new dream became to play for Chelsea.

I will continue trying to manage expectations when it comes to him, Ferguson, et al. They’ll move if the transfer/agent fees are right, along with the player’s wage packet.

Isn't it the very reason why he is playing for Brighton .

Absolutely. There is no pretence here. Develop, raise profile, sell, invest in the next couple. It’s the club’s sustainability model.

I am pointing out that an established and in-demand player being a childhood fan of one club is meaningless, without them offering the most attractive incentives for joining - and of course the selling club accepting their figure.

Oh I agree Childhood fan thing is kind irrelevant when players are choosing clubs , my point was more towards your sense of managing expectations about him moving when all the factors you mentioned played the part in him moving to Brighton as well .

Its actually pretty hard not to emotionally invest in players but at the end of the day it's still their job most would try to do what's best for them similar to Clubs can't hold them against them .

Oh I think it’s very possible he will move in the summer, the issue is going to be the fee and who can afford it. I am pragmatic as a fan, of course the best players want to play at the highest levels possible. I’m talking about this specific endemic of believing a player is more likely to sign if they owned a Manchester United shirt as a ten year old.

How much you think he goes for?

£75m-£105m, depending on interest. The club rejected £75m in January, and with a new contract behind him and a gentleman’s agreement no doubt to let him go in the summer if a matching offer comes in. If Chelsea get involved, who knows…

Good point about Chelsea.

You could see a bidding war to be fair, id love him here but can't see united forking out.

He’d be a monster signing for you, but with needing a striker, possibly a goalkeeper, cover in defence, I just can’t see this being your marquee signing. Could be wrong though - you never can tell.

Really? Didn't think Brighton would be open to losing both Mac Allister and Caicedo

I think everyone has “a price” that’s too good to refuse. And I mean everyone. I think the likelihood of both going is fairly low personally, but I am also realistic that we can’t say no to outrageous fees.
