I think Nani was one of those few whom Sir Alex trusted a hell lot. It was no surprise that he was hardly ever dropped or benched in any big European games.

Him moving to the left was more due to Valencia being capable of playing in only one position and starting his United career with a bang rather than a lack of confidence in him.

When Nani and Rafael played on the right flank though, it was something else

He was a frustrating and often disappointing player whose inconsistent Performances were pasted over by matches of brilliance. His delivery in final third was atrocious and for every good pass, there will be dozen more due to his poor decision Making and showboating.

Barring 2010/11 season where he was less frustrating, I can't say he ever hit his peak with any team. Ultimate underachiever.

That's true but in the league he'd have a bad game and he wouldn't seem to start the next one. It was a bit odd really.

Yea I remember such patterns and it was not just limited to Nani from what I recall. We won league titles ahead of teams who had better starting 11s because Sir Alex was the master of rotating players and still getting the results. He just knew who had to play which game and who had to rest. Us having really deep squads under Fergie helped a lot.

Like one week you'd have Young and Valencia starting and the other you'd see Giggs and Nani.

Of course, among the lot of them, Nani was the closest to being considerable as undroppable if he had reached the potential his talent had on a much more consistent basis. Its a shame really. On a different note, thought Portugal could have used him in the WC instead of that Guedes shit. Seeing him runout one last time in the Euros and be one of the best players of the tournament was so satisfying as a United fan.
