That Utd team that Moby mentioned in his OP was so fluid and had so many rotational options that it's hard to pin it down accurately in terms of formation and tactics, but I see distinct similarities between the respective Giggs and Di Maria roles. It's always a pleasure to rewatch so to take the 7-1 vs Roma as an example:



We lined up in a nominal 4-4-2 with Rooney and Smith up front and Ronaldo and Giggs out wide but throughout the match it often played out more like a 4-3-3, with Giggs coming infield and looking for the final pass from the centre, and Rooney often drifting out to the left wing.

He assists the second goal at 2:03 from a central area, passes from central midfield to Rooney on the left wing to set him up for a shooting opportunity at 5:35, then provides another assist from 5:58 with the traditional wing play we associate him with (he'd also popped up on the fecking right wing to assist the second goal ).

That sort of hybrid role is really similar to Di Maria's peak season IMO.
