MLB 2016

Teixeira is arguably the most well-rounded 1B of all time, and is behind only Pujols as the best 1B of this generation of players.

While I hate Sabermetric stats...
From 2003-2012—Teixeira's first 10 years in the big leagues—he ranked sixth among all position players in WAR. The only players higher: Albert Pujols, Alex Rodriguez, Adrian Beltre, Chase Utley and Carlos Beltran.

If voters can get over his injuries over the last few years, he should be in the Hall.

That's another arbitrary cutoff. Teixeira has 52 war, here are the modern era hall of famers below that level.

  1. Kirby Puckett
  2. Orlando Cepeda
  3. Ralph Kiner
  4. Lou Brock
  5. Bill Mazeroski
  6. Monte Irvin

Puckett was a controversial choice and hit a walk off home run in game 6 of the world series.
Cepeda won an MVP and lost a huge amount of time to injures.
Kiner led the league in home runs 7 straight years and retired at 32 due to injuries.
Brock has 3000 hits and is one of the best base stealers of all time, still controversial.
Mazeroski is widely regarded as undeserving but he hit the most famous home run of all time.
Monte Irvin spent his prime in the negro leagues.

Even among his peers, Teixeira doesn't stack up.

  1. Albert Pujols 101
  2. Jim Thome 73
  3. Miguel Cabrera 68
  4. Todd Helton 61
  5. Mark Teixiera 52
  6. Joey Votto 45

@Eboue
How is it an arbitrary cut off to point out a player's prime years?

Also, compared to those peers...
Pujols, Thome, Cabrera, and Helton are all going into the Hall as it stands and Teixeira is in a class of his own in terms of fielding.

On top of that, he is one of the best switch hitters ever. The only switch hitters comparable or better than him at the plate are either in the Hall or will be inducted (Jones and Beltran).

Yes. He gets paid $7 million for the remainder of this season and $21 million for all of next year. Nice work if you can get it.

seems like away both people can save face a bit, arod can save face by not been released and been an advisor and yankees can act like they are paying for something without having to pay 27 million for a guy to sit on their bench or completely release him

Because 2003-2012 aren't necessarily the prime years of the other players in the league. Teixeira has a career UZR/150 of 5.8 at 1B, Pujols is at 6.1 How is Teixeira in a class of his own? The switch hitter thing is just trivia, it doesn't make him better or worse.

1) 5 gold gloves?
2)

Should standards for Cooperstown be dropped for switch-hitters then?
It wouldn't be "dropping the standards"...

He has better numbers than other 1Bs already in the Hall and he did it from both sides of the plate.

On top of that, getting into the Hall isn't just about hitting. Teixeira is a superb all around 1st baseman.

Oh I agree, he's an amazing defensive first baseman. I just think he's going to have a tough time making the HoF. He played a power position but doesn't have over-the-top power numbers or put simply, hasn't hit 500 HRs. Wasn't known to be especially clutch in the postseason or have had that defining moment in the postseason either. Never won any MVP awards (regular-season or otherwise). Out of current first basemen, the only shoo-ins are Pujols, Cabrera, and Ortiz. Teixeira was consistently good, but not quite up there with the greats.

There are a lot of power hitters in Cooperstown who never hit 500 home runs.

True, but most played in different eras. I'm not saying 500 HRs is a pre-requisite (Bagwell will likely make the HoF), but certain milestones like 500 HRs or 3,000 hits will usually guarantee entry. Unless your name is Rose, Bonds, McGwire, Sosa or Palmeiro (for obvious reasons).

I don't see Teixeira as a HOFer. Maybe Hall of Good or Hall of What Could Have Been.

Mattingly was a better fielder no doubt. As were Hernandez and Snow.

If Teixeira somehow gets voted into the HOF, there's quite a few 1Bs that should be in as well including the steroid group.

In other news, Ichiro says he wants to play to age 50. That's another 7-8 seasons.

Think he can get to at least age 45? That's only two more seasons.

he's geting more marginalised by the marlins this year, so it seems unlikly he will make another 2 seasons(never mind 7), especially when his contracts up this year.

maybe he can go back to japan? i don't know what the level of baseball is like there?

So long fat boy, hope you enjoy milking the Rangers and Tigers out of the remaining monies.

Technically, I think an insurance policy purchased by the clubs will be on the hook.

Update: Insurance policy pays part. http://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybr...eres-what-happens-with-his-96-million-salary/

--But, according to multiple sources, Fielder will not be retiring. Instead, he will go on the 60-day disabled list. And, he can continue to stay on the 60-day DL, perhaps for the entire length of his contract depending on what his doctors declare his state of health to be.--

Gotta love guaranteed contracts if you're an athlete in a league with a strong union.

I don't really watch baseball but I'm getting into mlb the show and picking it up bit by bit but Can anybody please tell me how to Get called up to main team

I'm a triple A starter I'm doing very well (I think) but never get called up. I'm into my second season now.

In my 6 games of second season I have 10 rbi's and 4 HR my average is .615 (I only play on rookie) because like I said I don't know the rules yet so it's a learning curve but getting there. I've heard changing postion might help I'm currently playing for Syracuse chiefs (who suck) and my main team is Washington Nationals.

never played the game.... in real life you get called up by playing well and if their is a need for someone in your position in the big league team.

is it a good game?

Yeah I'm enjoying it as I said I don't really watch baseball IRL and I don't know the rules but I'm enjoying it and learning. I might request a trade as I seem to not be getting the call up to majors even though I'm way too good for triple A

Amazed the Mets are back in the Wild Card hunt considering the injurys they have had and are having.... if they make it into the Post season it will be one hell of an achievement!

Honestly they need to shorten the season it should be ending on 140-150 games. Finish regular season by Mid-September. Roll right into the playoffs, avoid some of the crap weather in October.

This mention of playing a baseball simulation game got me thinking to one I used to own and love. It was called Pursue the Pennant, but is now called Dynasty League Baseball. There is a board game version and a computer/online version, but it's not a video game. The board game version is incredibly in depth with everything from how the players performed (even down to how they performed vs righties or lefties), to ball park conditions, weather, players "clutch" ability, their temperament , injuries, wild plays, etc. You need to rest your players at times just like in the real game. It was truly incredible when I played it back in the late 1980's (season I had was the Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, etc Mets at the height of their power). I have played a few games of the updated version with friends who have the game, it still is great.

It's pricey. Thinking of buying the new version of the game. They have multiple past seasons you can buy going back into the 1960's even. You can also get some sets that contain just some of the greatest teams from baseball history.

Last MLB game I played was on the Dreamcast and I loved it. The Show not being available on the Xbox in this day and age is just stupid.
