Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

This is the only match in the tournament that I can find a video record (they're currently through to semi-final, playing Liverpool).

Shirt numbers are a bit different to the original squad list. Charlie is number 11, Iqbal is 8, Shoretire 10, Mayamona 7, Levent Gundogan is 9 and I have no idea who're the number 6 and 12.

6 is a Slovakian lad Martin Svidersky, I think 12 is Steven Walters

Dishon Bernard, a 16-year old defender from Chelsea, is going to sign a scolarship for United. Source: the boy himself and always brilliant @jb8521

If Howson is right and the quotes are true, English football will continue to decline and decline, no matter how much more money they will make in coming years. Such stupid philosophies. As United fan it is frustrating sometimes that City, Chelsea beat everyone on every level, but thats more to their physical kids. Saying things like Angel Gomes and Paul Scholes wouldnt make it through the ranks, are absurd. They'd be superstars at Ajax and Barcelona.

I know @Mr. MUJAC has done some work with FTD and he seems to know his onions (understatement) @jb8521 and @khoazany may be able to shed further light on this.
From what I've heard the scouts have been told to look at physical and pacey players who they think can develop well technically as well in order to supplement the smaller players but they definitely haven't been told to stop looking at smaller players. A noticeable gap in a lot of the underage squads at the moment are number 9s and CBs so looking at more players with the attributes to play in these positions wouldn't be any harm.

Thanks, this seems very sensible tbf.

There are 3 type of players in the academy: the outstanding talents, the decent talents with some interesting attributes that might develop into good players and those players just to supplement the other talents to make up a good "squad". I'd say getting some physical and pacey players with some technical attributes to balance up for the smaller, more technical players is a smart strategy. For example 3 of our brightest U14s attackers are quite small but we have 2 big, quick strikers at that group which makes things easier for those small attackers.

Wonder if Greenwood will move to U18's next season. He'll still be 15 for the first couple of months of the season but that's pretty much the same situation as Gomes at the start of this current season (about a month difference).

If he's as good as the stories you'd think he could make the step up, especially as size won't be as much of an issue with him.

I think he probably would've played for the U18s already if he didn't get injured.

We have been recruiting some bigger players recently but they are all good on the ball as well AFAIK and aren't there just to be big. We have some players that are deadwood, if we are to get some bigger players, I'd say it's probably to replace them. I don't think they'll come in to just be big either but rather as a new type of player to develop and not only small technical players anymore.

I think it depends on whether McKenna decides to play him ahead of McGhee and/or Mellor. If that happens probably it would just take 1-2 injuries for him to start games (from the look of it Barlow,Tanner and Chong/Baars will probably will first choices of the 3 behind the striker with Gomes promoted to the U23s. I don't think we will play Tanner as right back next season since we have Laird/Williams for that).

Saw someone mention on Reddit that McTominay might be in the match day squad for the Swansea game?

Yeah, apparently he arrived at the Lowry with the rest of the squad for tomorrows match. So might be involved.

I think it's a balance thing.

I can't see us stopping our culture of recruiting technical players...that's our way.

But we certainly are lacking the balance of more physicality in some positions.

The real issue I have is development v winning mentality. Maybe the new coaches feel that we are too development focused at the moment and are trying re-address that.

Stephen Howson's video is 98% right but the idiot coach who reckons Paul Scholes wouldn't come through in today's environment clearly never saw Scholes as an 18 year old. Like Jesse Lingard...although they were small and not muscular they were certainly physical. I think that is what triggered Howson to talk about it.

Stephen talks about the CO92 not winning the league in 1992...but they were all breaking through into the first team around that time and also won the league in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998....that's seven titles in nine years.

They were very physical teams with a strong winning mentality.

Nice hat trick for Harrop tonight in front of Mourinho and co. Good chance of playing in the Palace game I hope.

Highly-rated coach Lee Carsley has walked out one year into his spell as u18 coach at City....have a gut feeling he might have been offered the United u23 role.....

As in the former Everton midfielder?

Adi Viveash has quit as Chelsea u23 manager as well so some decent candidates available

No chance. The squad on Wed has already been decided that's why Mitchell and McTominay didn't play.
I just assumed it was because they were involved yesterday and asking them to travel back from London and then preparing for another game might be a bit much.
