Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

Speaking about youngsters with long lasting injuries; does anybody know if Tom Jones and Ashton Missin are or have been injured? It seems that they both used to be quite a lot on the score sheets for the various academy teams - but apparently not much this last months.
Or have they maybe left the club?
I assume they would both have the age to play U16 by now…
As far as I know Missin is playing down with the u15s most of the time because of his size but has been offered a scholarship but Jones hasn't been offered a scholarship

Yep. I also kept stressing my preference for academy / U23 games and profiles above anything else.

I acknowledged that the reduced number of live games being shown had a lot to do with covid, or the movement away from Friday night U23 matches to the weekend meaning they now clash with PL games. But, in those situations, I asked for more delayed full match recordings, or at least extended highlights of those games, rather than just clips of the goals.

I don't expect any improvement though. Moving forward, I'm expecting more priority given to things like podcasts, shows with fans / celebrities, interactive features, etc. Rather than the more old school live youth football in front of small crowds. But I hope not, as the youth games are the main reason I get MUTV.

There is some sort of policy going on at United where they are scheduling Reserve games at the same time as first team games. Therefore MUTV can't cover it. I have no idea why and the people in charge are not communicating why. It's a ridiculous policy.

This is hopeless MUJAC and quite shocking to be fair. The way the club is going and knowing many people enjoy watching the teams (other than the firsts) you'd think they'd try and be accommodating to keep fans hopes up with juniors coming through. 2 minute highlights kills me!!!!

Do you know of any other lads that have been offered scholarships for next season?

The U18 PL cup game v West Brom - that was going to be on MUTV this morning - has been postponed due to the weather.

The U23's play tonight away at Man City but, as usual, that won't be on MUTV as it overlaps with the first team match.

Yes...then let the Premier League know what has been agreed. Apparently, United have decided to schedule most Reserve games to co-incide with first team games. The website coverage is minimal...just a bunch of photos.

I was cussing out the Premier League all this time.

The reason I got MUTV was to follow the Academy/U23 live games.

Unless there is some Covid-19 reasoning behind it this is disgraceful.

Just watched first half hour of 23s against City. 3 down already. Like non league v champions league. Is it players or coaching?

As far as I know Myles, Ogunneye, Jackson, Kingdon, Nolan, McAllister, Curley, Moorhouse, Missin, Williams, Sharpe, Berry & Wheatley were all offered them

Good names there so excellent news.

I completely agree with you. The other local clubs seem to have better coverage of Acadamy / woman’s games and better - more informed / articulate pundits / commentators. I’ve recently had the privilege to suffer visiting people who were watching Liverpool and another City. I know grass is greener and all that, but our pundits can’t pronounce the players names correctly, we miss a lot of the game on pitch as they pan into various pitch side coaches etc, the game play is not always about the player on the ball.
I’m very much an intermittent watcher of MUTV, after cutting it out of my sky package a few years ago. But I do have occasional app access. Which confirms my decision to stop paying.
MUTV is such a valuable and could be a useful insight to the club, the history and the future of the game.
im not interested in Travis Binion’s hat or that the physio has been busy!

Are these boys offered Pro contracts like the Manchester City boys are?

I reckon there would be a lot of people who enjoy 18/23's. I always have and seeing kids coming through eg Mason, Rash, Elanga, Brandon, Hendo and the new crop.

I really liked Neil Wood in the beginning, but quite worrying how bad they still are at playing out from the back. Mistake after mistake. Against City, they gave away two goals from that and it still keeps coming. Another thing is that they are really clumsy in their own penalty box, at least five penalties given away so far. I also think we're missing some types of players in the team, for example, a winger with pace who is not just a "run straight forward until you hit a defender and ignore your teammates" player.

Two of the goals were gifts, and when you start handing out gifts against a quality youth setup, then you're putting yourself on the back-foot and encouraging the opponent.

What the absolute feck was that from the keeper? Midfielder was wide open.

Hopefully they can learn from these types of mistakes at least.

We have been light years behind City for a while it feels

This is one pretty weak team on paper to be fair. And against City it's no surprise they got easily beat. Except for Shoretire and maybe Fernandez, the rest won't be heading towards the first team squad.

  1. Kovar
  2. Wellens
  3. Fernandez
  4. Fish
  5. Hardley
  6. Svidersky
  7. Shoretire
  8. Savage
  9. Hugill
  10. Iqbal
  11. Emeram

They were all pretty good in the U18 last season but IMO mainly because they were old (compare to our U18 today), worked hard and quite robust.

There must be more ex-United youth keepers in the premier league than any other club and we still have a few. Before he went on loan I thought Kovar was supposed to be a bit special

Probably. We have Gollini, Heaton and Henderson. And probably Johnstone next season (but not Gollini).

I thought Hugill was really highly rated? Keep hearing good things about Fish and Iqbal too...no guarantees or even likely these days but in with a shot no?

It's just strange. Granted this might be just an error in recollection but whenever I have managed to watch football at this level it seems we are dominated by City.

We've won games, but it seems we are consistently outplayed, outpassed and outshoy for years now. I suppose I just find It disappointing that we can't seem to control games against other elite sides at the level.

Again, might well be just my memory and lack of being able to watch as consistently as I once did. So maybe well off the mark.

Hugill has struggled for form and has arguably seen himself surpassed by McNeill, Fish is a classy defender but he's obviously nowhere near ready as he couldn't even get into a Conference team, CBs are always really hard to judge at youth level anyway as the good ones typically steamroll all the attackers they're against but how that translates to senior football is almost a lottery. Iqbal is incredibly skillful but never a potential first-teamer.

I think the step up from the academy to the seniors is as known, a huge jump for most. CR, Rooney etc being quite dominant at 18-19 in PL is pretty rare. The team list I put up are definitely guys who will all have a career in pro football. Be it championships, lower leagues etc. To make our 1st team you have to have something that absolutely stands out in class, attitude, belief and technique. Shola has always had something, even reading the play. Will he make it, not even sure there. Mason had amazing shooting, skill and speed in academy games from young age, always going to make it with those characteristics, unless a Ravel motivation. Angel Gomes was another with immense talent, just too small and not quick enough for PL. Hannibal seems a shoe in, technique and toughness so ready made for PL. Elanga has made the step up. Ethan Laird is going great guns on loan, Mason and Rash. Tedi Mengi has hit form again and getting great reviews as a CB.

Pye,Norkett,Ennis,Curley with the goals and Marcus Lawrence also returned from injury

I'm hearing good things about this kid.

Thanks for that.

It's always good to know who to look out for before they come through into the U18's.

Adam Berry is another one that I'm looking forward to seeing more of.

Lots of Premier League clubs knocked out of the FA Youth Cup so far:

And Liverpool play Chelsea, we play Everton and Spurs if they win tomorrow will play Wolves so not many of the "big" clubs left.

Leicester, Brighton and Newcastle the only 3 other P.L Clubs going into the 5th round

We’re not even at full strength as well. Although we’ve looked solid so far and look more of a TEAM than others in the past, we’re still to see Hugill, Shoretire, Forson and Kambwala.
