Is the lad with 69 on his kit O'Hara? Looks like a mountain compared Shaw, Ando and Smalling.

Might be the difference in elevation

Yes, 69 is the training number for Kieran O´Hara. Did well on loan last year.

Great news for McNair and Goss! Have Thorpe, Pearson and Rothwell trained with the first team as yet this season? I don't remember hearing their names.

U18s: Man City 1 United 0
Manchester United slipped to a narrow defeat against Manchester City in an entertaining Barclays Under-18 Premier League derby in Moss Side.

There was little to choose between the teams, but one outstanding strike by Manuel Garcia Alonso, early in the second half, was sufficient for the Blues to claim the spoils against Paul McGuinness' young Reds.

A small piece of history was made with this being the last game between the clubs to be staged at City's Platt Lane training centre. The Blues have played their junior fixtures there for countless years with some terrific contests against United during that time and everybody was hoping to bring down the derby curtain with another memorable game.

Whilst there were no goals to enjoy in the first half, the period still provided much to admire. City, it has to be said, had the better of the few and far between chances and embroidered their approach play with some swift passing. United looked more dangerous on the break though with Demetri Mitchell and Marcus Rashford giving the hosts' defence some nervy moments.

Eight minutes into the second half and the Blues moved into the lead after the Reds' defence failed to clear their lines from a free-kick. The ball found its way to Garcia Alonso on the edge of the area and he instantly launched a shot that United goalkeeper Dean Henderson had little chance of seeing let alone stopping.

Play was halted for a few minutes soon after whilst Henderson received treatment for what appeared to be a leg injury. The young keeper was then taken to the dressing room by stretcher, receiving warm and sympathetic applause from Blues and Reds alike as he departed the scene.

Goss, McNair and O´Hara train with United first team today.

No sign of them in any of the pictures or the video of training. Could they not just have been on the way out to train with the under 21's?

Seems Henderson picked up a bad injury in the Mini Derby. Hope it's not too serious.

A bit random perhaps but where the funk is Liam Grimshaw these days?

Was injured for most of the last seasons and was on the U21s bench so far this season. Will start the next match IMO if we don't play Jones/Janko/Vermijl in CB.

Was about to ask where the hell is Donald Love this season. We've really ruined that crop in terms of stepping up to the U21s.

Didn't realize he'd been amongst the subs, good news. For some reason I thought we hadn't seen hide nor hair of him this season.

Love was injured in the final pre-season game at Barnsley, wasn't he? Perhaps that's why he's been MIA.

I'm really worried for him,Love and Weir.Him and Weir in particular has been good for the U18s but still can't claim a starting spot for the U21s and it's already their second year at this level.Love won't start as long as Janko is still with the U21s.We really need to accelerate our loaning strategy to make place for them.

George Dorrington starts for Newcastle U18s today on a youth loan from us.

According to Burnley's twitter account, Will Keane missed several chances. Sam Johnstone played. No other United players mentioned. One of the United goals was due to a deflected cross.

Mitchell out for 3-4 months.Big blow for the U18s.Hopefully will get back on time for FA Youth Cup.Dearnley/Rathbone needs to step up now.

Such a shame. He started the season so well.

Will be interesting to see how they do, the U11's are supposed to be pretty weak this year, City have tempted the best players away from this group.

Jeez Louise, that not good. In fact, it's a situation we absolutely cannot allow to continue if we want the academy to remain non-shit. These nouveau riche clubs seem to adapt a very aggressive recruitment policy even at youth levels and that's something we need to react to, 'cause there's only so much local (or even English) talent to go around.

The poaching at these younger ages is down to the EPPP, the compensation fee for the u9's, 10's and 11's is a cumulative £3000 a year and all they can sign is a one year rolling contract that has a cooling off period every April where the player can make a switch. At U12 the compensation jumps to £40,0000 and I think the contract is also longer, therefore City are targeting these younger age groups and are offering financial rewards.

The Academy fixture against City is next weekend, so it will be interesting to see what happens, I've heard we no longer send our best kids to this fixture.

Luckily the (supposedly) best ones has already promoted to the U12s.I heard that the U11s tore Chelsea apart last week or so, but perhaps Chelsea didn't send their best squad.Anyway yeah we must have some strong action about this some of our very good talents have already nicked anyway by them in the past few years.

United U12s (the 2003 crop) also take part in the Christmas Truce tournament qualifier tomorrow. It's the 100-year ceremony so the qualifier will be played in Belgium this time round.2 out of 20 PL teams will proceed to the final round on December.

I don't think they tend to promote the best players permanently at these lower age groups, they do play some up a year now and again but they tend to stay with their own age group. Regarding the 11's they seem to have a few trialists in at the moment and I think 5-6 of the best 10's are going to the Legia Cup to help strengthen the squad. It's true the 11's beat Chelsea a couple of weeks ago, but so did the 9's & 10's so I wouldn't read too much into that.

I wouldn't read too much about the result of these tournaments also since how many "early born" kids in the squad would have a big impact on the performance, like in Legia Cup all the late 03' born are ineligible. Is your lad going?

We will be in the same group as Arsenal,WBA,Burnley and Palace.First match vs Palace later at 8:30 am (don't know if BST or Belgium time).
