Fergie ready to jet in £6m Mig
From the Sun

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to make a £6million bid for Sporting Lisbon defender Miguel Veloso.

The Portuguese international, 21, impressed Alex Ferguson during United’s Champions League win in Lisbon last week.

And Fergie is ready to move in the January transfer window after being alerted to rival interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.

Veloso, whose father Antonio also played for Portugal, can play left-back, centre-half or as a defensive midfielder.

And he has made it clear he wants to move to England where his good friends and ex-Sporting stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani are already playing at Old Trafford.

Veloso shone during Sporting’s Champions League triumph over Inter Milan last season, when he put the shackles on Patrick Vieira and Portugal hero Luis Figo.

He captained Portugal in the recent UEFA Under-21 championships.

Would be a bargain at that price, Sporting claimed in August that they would only sell him if they got 30 million Euro.

He any good? Didn't even notice him against us.

I didn't know he could play in defence?

I've only seen him play as defensive midfielder. Actually I doubt he can play left back but don't know much about him tbh.

He started as a defender and yes he can play left back.

Looked a good player at the Under 21's Championship in the summer, didn't do much against us though

Good player - can't see him coming here to sit on the bench. I hope Arsenal don't get him, he would give them cover where they need it most (CB/LB/DM).

He's a good player, very cultured and technical. Don't see where we'd be looking to accomodate him though. He'd seemingly fit right in with our growing ex-Sporting contingent, not to mention other Portuguese speakers.

Scholes/Hargreaves/Carrick/Fletcher/Gibson/Veloso

Dont want more? Just add.. Glazers will pay ;)

Guess we have been linked with signing a left back apparently. And the fact that he can play in other positions is a bonus.

I'm sure he plays right back as well.

Erm.. You've confused him with the Miguel in the national team.

This Veloso is a central midfielder for sure and certainly looked a player next to Fernandes in the under 21 Euros in the summer. He also played well against us.

Would be a decent buy if we need central midfielders.

As for left back?

His pace isn't great, I'm not sure how he'd do in terms of one vs one with a speedy winger or getting up and down the pitch faste enough to support his winger ala Evra.

Here's a really novel idea...

Why don't we buy an Englishman instead?

No chance, Wenger's got all of them.

Seriously though, who is there that is available at a good price and has enough quality ?

Well we don't need this guy, either. We have plenty of cover and decent youth.

So if he really feels he needs to splash out money on an unneeded and average player who'll barely be used, it might as well be an Englishman.

I honestly don't want there to be more native Portuguese speakers at United than English speakers.

I agree that if we are going to splash the cash, it would be better to go on young English talent, but the problem is that there isn't any at around at the moment.

Veloso holds United dream

Sporting Lisbon ace Miguel Veloso admits joining Manchester United would be a 'dream'.

The Portugal Under 21 international has been linked with a move to the Premier League champions in recent weeks.

Capable of playing in defence or midfield, Veloso would relish the chance to link up with former Sporting starlets Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani at Old Trafford.

He is rated in the £8million bracket and, while happy at his current club, would be a tempted by an offer from United.

"To join United is a dream for any player," Veloso is quoted in the News of the World.

"I'm happy in Portugal, but if a chance to join such a big club like them came along I would jump at it.

"Nani speaks sensationally about United and it would be sensational for me to play there with him and Cristiano."

Veloso produced a solid performance in Sporting's recent 1-0 defeat to United in the UEFA Champions League and will come up against his suitors for a second time in late November.
