Michael Olise

Was banging on about this guy since last Jan :(

It seemed like INEOS identified him as a target and wanted him too, there were many links to United through out last winter and just before the summer window with us. The defensive crisis last season and the need for defensive reinforcements meant we prioritized guys like Yoro, De Ligt, Mazraoui instead of an attacker. I do wonder how things would've gone if we gave up on Yoro or Zirkzee and just went for Olise instead. After Bayern showed up we had no chance but I think there was a moment before end of last season where we could've got him.

Anyway, I have to console myself thinking we'd still improve with a Cunha / Eze level attacker even if they are slightly below an Olise. Hope Vivell and Wilcox have something brewing.

Really wanted us to sign him and he's supposed to be a United fan too.

What was he rated like in England before his move anyway? I hadn’t really heard much about him and he seems to fly under the radar still. Which is irritating to me, because he’s been the best player in the Bundesliga (equal to Wirtz) this season, in my opinion.

He was a player of interest to all big PL sides and Chelsea and City actively tried to sign him, you beat them to him

Let's not panic. He's been doing well in a well-oiled team, in a league where 15 teams are below the level of Southampton. He also didn't struggle with injuries which can still come. Can still do a Mane. There are few decent wingers around his level out there every year waiting to step up. We should chill about him.

Chelsea had a deal agreed with him in the summer of 2023 but did so via underhandedly triggering a secret buyout clause instead of just approaching Palace respectfully - quite rightly they told us to feck off and signed Olise to a new deal without that clause. Were back in for him again last summer but he opted for Bayern; hard to hold that against him.

Olise under the radar? He was one of the top players last year and some top clubs including us were in for him if I recall it correctly.

Best debut season from a Bayern player I can remember since Robben.
He is the no.1 player I wanted this summer. Checked so many boxes. Not too surprised he has had the impact he has had for Bayern.

How does he fit your team though?
He could have played for Odegaard or Saka...and I am sure he could have filled in a few games on the left side as well. We were always going to be in trouble if Odegaard or Saka went down for a while and this year we had both....combined with an out of form Odegaard when he did make it back. We are now looking a little better there withe emergence of Nwaneri, but he is not at that level yet.

If you want to win the PL, you have to have backup options. We never had one for our two most important attacking threats.

Olise is no backup option. He's far too good for that.

I think he means each one would be a back up, given who’s most in form/injured. See it with loads of top teams - whoever falls off either fights for their place driving competition, or has to move on

Yes.

Was so obvious he was going to be good

He’s really raised his level. Great player to watch and very effective

I’m not even particularly convinced he has tbh, he’s just managed to stay fit. He played 19 games in the PL last season, scored 10 and assisted 6. Extrapolate that out over 38 games and it’s ridiculous.

The only question marks were about his fitness but it seems Bayern are managing him a bit better on that front; probably a bit easier when you can bring in Gnabry and Coman rather than Schlupp and Ayew I guess :D

I think yes, that’s a big part off it but I also feel from watching him, playing with better players (no disrespect) has elevated him

Hadn't watched him before he joined Bayern, but i'm very impressed. Has been delivering, was at a very constant level easily the best wing player all season for us. Given his age, that's promising.

A shame we didn’t get Doue, too. We were really close but couldn’t seal the deal, due to a lack of sales to generate the cash.

this is the type of greed you're warned about/against in the bible

Always looked like a great talent. No surprise that when he has found consistent fitness he is getting more heralded.

Palace have a few players who clearly look ready for the step-up. Which is not meant as a dig at Palace, they are good at spotting talent and personalities.

Nobody knows for sure...but I think at United he would of just drowned in the sea of negativity like so many others.

But he could of played for any of the top sides in the Prem...playing for a dominant Bayern side also helps.
