Michael Keane

Was better than Jonny Evans and Vermijl who crumbled 2nd half after a solid first half. Some knee jerk stuff being posted across threads frankly.

Well I had him down as the worst of the 3 central defenders which is something given how atrocious Evans was. I thought Vermijl was the best, making fewer errors than the other two.

The problem he, and Blackett, face, is that we no longer have ageing defenders about to retire, allowing them time to develop, the prospect of a space opening up in the near future; instead the chance is right now. If LVG decides he needs to bring in more defenders, they (Keane + Blackett) are going to struggle to get playing time this season and in future seasons too, unless they can force their way past one or more of Smalling, Jones or Evans.

He would be better in a two man defence. His passing is atrocious but he is still a decent defender.

I remember he was responsible for us losing late goals against Chelsea in the league cup a few seasons ago when we were coasting to a win in the final minutes of the game
That was Wootton, for one, and for two, this was a freak result. I remember a few years back when Smalling and Evans got a working over from Carlton Cole and West Ham. It wasn't the end for either of them, no least Smalling who had similar experience at the time as Keane does now.

Vermijl crumbled 2nd half.

Tbf, this was a new system and our midfield after Powell went off was gassed Anderson and 18 year old Pereira who was struggling on the defensive end and physically.

He wasn't better than Vermijl. I think Keane was at fault for the 2nd goal with a horrible give away.

He was very good against a strong Chelsea team. That was wootton who cost us.

True that was a bad giveaway but high up the pitch Anderson should have covered his runner there playing as the DM. Vermijl was positionally all over the place for the last 2 goals that came from that side. Evans responsible for first and played a part in last 2 as well.

Keane could have covered better for 3rd as well but it was a shambles.

He's a Championship defender. Seen him a few time on loan and for England U21s and he's just not that good against the better opposition. Could become a mid-lower half table PL defender in the future, but a lot to work on.

I remember Smalling actually having a pretty decent game then, and he pretty much won the back up center back role after that game ahead of Evans. It was Evans who was getting torched by Carlton Cole and ended up getting hooked after the 4th goal.

Neither of them impressed me remotely in that match. Of course Keane was very young for a defender then, still is young but this is his big chance. I can't see him getting another chance at United if this season goes badly for him.

I don't know if he is good enough or not. In some respects he is perhaps unlucky that Blackett has shot past him over the last couple of months. Who knows what will happen ? By the end of the season Keane may have overtaken more than just Blackett, or alternatively, he could be on his way out.

He was atrocious tonight, weak in the tackle and his crazy pass for the second goal effectively took the game beyond United

He should count it as a privilege to have played for United but we're wasting our time giving him minutes as he's not good enough

He is not on an acceptable level for us. Shouldn't have been promoted to the first team.

Same. We conceded 5 (?) goals in that game too

It's odd but I've always rated Keane whereas never rated Blackett.

They seem to be doing opposite in the first team though.

Keane simply isn't ready/good enough for the first team at the moment. I don't think playing him is doing him any good at the moment but we are forced to because of injuries. Can't be great for his confidence long term.

Sorry but he's another dopey CB with no minimal technical ability in terms of passing the ball. I know he's young but seriously one of the worst ever displays by a United player.

How so? He was awful tonight.
So this is a knee jerk reaction then?

I thought he was the least worst of the three centre backs though that still meant he was pretty awful. Of the three goals after Evans' gift two of them were down the left hand side where Vermijl and Evans were dreadful. Not sure how one pretty terrible rushed pass suddenly makes him a bad passer either but I guess that's probably down to people rushing to judge a player they've watched in all of about 3 games.

big critic of his, but his fans will no doubt just say its knee jerk from tonight, its not and hes not good enough.

Im not impressed by what i've seen. Sorry, maybe he's better in the reserves, but your real worth is only gauged by your first team performances. You have to take those chances. I know a lot of people here don't rate Blackett in the reserves but in the first team the difference between him and Keane has been like night and day. Save for a few flashes here and there, young Keane looks very vulnerable under any kind of pressure. He needs another loan. Blackett on the other hand looks like he's ready to be a dependable backup player in the first team.

To be fair, his whole career he has been, up until our summer tour.

I really question this after what i've seen from both, even from a basic level. Anyways, things change and players develop differently.

Maybe a loan would sort him out but he really doesn't instill any confidence now. Looks like the next John Curtis to me. Not ready for the first team and I doubt he ever will be to be honest. Hope I'm wrong though.

Doesn't seem to have any real quality that sticks out about him. Shit on the ball, clumsy, not particularly strong or quick, average in the air. Fair to say he won't make it here, and that isn't just based on today, but I get this impression every time he plays.

This.

Particularly scratching my head at people who think he is poor on the ball. Even pulled off a excellent couple of cross field passes today even though without any outlets like our other defenders had poor moments as well. Just look at the game vs Sunderland even few days back.

If I hadn't seen it I'd have a hard time believing myself. Blackett was a defense of liability at left back especially in the air, the few games he got at center back for the reserves two years ago were disastrous.

On loan he plays three or four games at center back and the teams conceded tons of goals in those games, though I didn't see any of them. Mostly he played at left back.

He's also grown taller and much stronger so I don't doubt that's made a big difference.

I've only seen him play for the first team, and he hasn't really shown me anything that makes me believe he will prove to be a success here, unlike Blackett who has shown a lot of promise.

On the other hand, many are claiming Keane showed more promise before this season than Blackett did, so I still reserve judgement. Tonight wasn't a good performance though. I know pretty much no one stepped up, but for some reason he really stood out for me tonight.

Evans was worse, no question but if you concede 4 goals I don't think anyone can claim to have had a good game.

That doesn't mean much to me these days. You ever watch a game and have such a contrasting view on one player compared to another poster such that you question if they're seeing the same game? Some posters thought Powell was excellent today for instance. Yikes

I like Blackett and agree that he's gone ahead of Keane in terms of the pecking order, helped a lot by being one of few left footers, due to his performance in the first team but it's an undeniable fact that he had not shown anywhere near the level of promise as Keane either in the Reserves or out on loan.

Not ready for first team yet, obviously quite shite in his last 2 matches for us. Do not want to see him this season anywhere near the first team to be honest.

He's a brute over a ball player. Lets be reasonable here and give the lad a chance. Some of you lot are ridiculous - he had a bad game, acknowledged but he isn't a shite footballer because of it.

Defenders are tested over a longer period of time vs varied opponents and systems anyway compared to almost all other positions.

He was shite vs Sunderland ?
