Agree with this. It's a dilemma, but one can keep Mata on the bench and put him on if we are chasing a goal. Carrick needs someone with energy next to him though. I still maintain that his recovery pace (over distance) isn't bad, obviously not Mensah-like, but he really struggles on those first five yards which leads him too far behind. But he has always been like this.

Yeah, but as you said it's not unlike Scholes towards the end with the difference being that Carrick defends considerably better although doesn't have the same technique Scholes did. As long as we've got the right balance around him, i.e. Herrera and Pogba then we can protect Carrick. I think we could get Bailly to step up more as well at times and let Carrick drop deeper when needed which can give him a bit more time in games where teams look to hound him.

I think I used the word "decent" to describe his top speed and said he had awful acceleration, but on a long stretch he isn't slow. You claim he slows us down when he in fact initiates every single fast attack we have with his incisive pass through the middle our to the wings, but yeah.
No you said he was fast, quite literally.

Jeez - I said he was fast in terms of outright top speed. Quite literally, you said I argued he was quick, which I never did. Maybe you should read my entire argument, just as you should watch Carrick's entire match instead of that one time he dallied a bit on the ball to get a bigger picture on things? By the way, Paris is more than the Eiffel Tower.

Again, agree with this. We need to use him sparingly though. In the right set-up, with the defense holding a high line, Carrick is still a great player, but when there is space in between him and the defense, he struggles against hard pressing teams. With our new defense, we have so much speed that we don't need to worry about speedy attackers getting in behind. Carrick behind Herrera and Pogba is a great option, but I don't like leaving Mata out, but he is so much better through the middle than out wide... dilemmas.

Boy does he still spray his passes. His vision is spectacular, hopefully, we'll see the old man more often from now on.

Yeah, I would use that 3 for the big games as I don't think Pogba is disciplined enough to play a deeper role yet however for most games would want Mata in as well and think Herrera could play the deeper role fine over Carrick. I wouldn't want to play Carrick with Feli though as that's a bit slow and I think Feli won't offer the cover Carrick needs. For me the main thing we need to resolve though is the wide players rather than the middle. We need to get them running in behind more rather then looking to develop crosses as none of them are great crossers nor are the full backs. That will open space for us which will let Mata/Pogba influence more.

Anyone saying he shouldn't be in the team because he isn't fast need to get out the room and go back to playing fifa
97% passing accuracy...let that sink in

You're right of course, if you make up your own definitions. CARRICK IS NOT FAST. There's no arguing that. Even his biggest fans wouldn't claim he is fast.

It's pointless to argue. He loves argument. He doesnt read or listen to people and doesn't have a clue. Just end the discussion and don't waste your time.

Still got the passing range. But is he dynamic enough to be a Mourinho midfielder? Feel him, Herrera and Pogba is too defensive. Atm Herrera is excelling at the Carrick role

He is a classy player and has been a very very good player for United over the years.

He can play in the carling cup and the europa. But in the league he should not be starting. He could come in with 20 odd minutes to keep the game ticking. The game passes him by sometimes. Plus he seems to take an awful lot of time to plan his next pass which seems to slow the game and the attacks down.

Such a shame Fergie didnt sort out the midfield during his prime, eg 09 onwards. He was basically a one man midfield from that point onwards despite having an injury or two here and there.

Think he should be used as he is now, however. A bit of a luxury player and cup player.

José just needs to pick the right games for him! Good management will produce classy performances

Very surprised by his performance tonight. I'm a big critic of his but he played like he had a point to prove. Generally he tried to more often than not push the tempo, which is something I don't think he does regularly enough.

However, this was against a very poor Fernabache. Very good performance from him but he should be used in exactly games like these (at home and/or against opposition who do not possess high work rate players/playing style).

I've got to be honest, I love him. His body angle when he recieves the ball, his range of passing and his ability to create space for himself is first class. Just a brilliant footballer and whether he plays or not, the likes of Herrera, Fosu-Mensah etc should be soaking up all the knowledge they can off him because he's been there and done it all.

I'd like to see him in a three with Pogba and Herrera but you can't pick everyone. If we could sign a player who is 10 years younger and possesses his footballing ability, I'd be very happy.

Fellaini is not really that type of player - distribution and control of the game from deep is not good enough - a younger Pirlo would be idea but I'd take a younger Carrick

How is that cloning process going? I'd like a Scholes and a Giggs to go too, please. What about Brazilian no9, is he in stock?

There are many good midfielders around. I'm not sure we need the same type of midfielder. I'd gladly take Verratti, though that would mean the most expensive central midfield ever.

He's right though. Fellaini is no Carrick

Maybe Blind can do the trick

What Carrick shows us is that no matter how much of a pure DM player we are after we need to get someone with abillity on the ball. Abillity on the ball by all in the midfield is essential in modern football, this is why someone like Schneiderlin can't cut it as holding midfield \ DM for a top club.

There needs to be some ball abillity in there, perhaps except if the player in question is such a mobile, positional wise and all conquering DM that he literally free the other guy \ other two in the midfield two\three from nearly all defensive duties.

Fellaini is certainly no Carrick. They are completely different players, indeed. Blind is more similar, and I do wonder how well he would fare in Carrick's role. His passing range is probably the closest we have to Carrick, but he does spend more time on the ball than Carrick does. Carrick has the same ability, though to a lesser extent, as Scholes to know where his teammates are and where to pass before he receives the ball.

Good performance from Carrick and boy do we miss a younger version of his like? Hope Jose gives him more games

He is going to be so hard to replace. You need someone who is an excellent breakthrough passer who is also a great defensive reader of the game. You usually see a player with one of those elements, not both. Herrera looks like the closest to that right now, but that is off a very small sample size.

Weirdly he did show one lovely burst of pace in the left back position last night to cut out an attack. Maybe he does have a reasonable top speed

Completely agree. I'd much rather someone who can read the game, screen the back four and pick good forward passes that the destroyer type DMs so many seem to want us to bring in.

He's great. I can't believe people wanted rid at the start of the season, and were comparing him with Schweinsteiger who he's head and shoulders above. A valuable squad player to have. One who, the more he plays, the happier I'll be.

Carrick clocked our highest top speed against Bournemouth last season. Can't be that horrible in long sprints.

Valencia, Martial and Rashford all played that game.

Thank you for proving my point. Good top speed, awful acceleration.

That does NOT prove your point. It just proves how sluggish/disinterested/avoiding risk of injury (or all of these) the rest of the team's performance was against Bournemouth last season in that match - a dead rubber the week before the cup final.

Could Dahoud play a Carrick role or is he too attacking?

Haven´t seen him too many times. But he certainly has a very good passing range to play that role, but i think for Borussia Mönchengladbach Kramer is usually the more defensive minded player in midfield.
