Micah Richards - The Pundit

If Rashford was of a white ethnicity, Richard's wouldn't have even brought it up.
Nah, Richards just has to be the contrarian for the sake of Sky having a debate.

He didn’t even believe it himself, probably had a producer telling him what to say.

It was terrible TV.

Richards arguing for the sake of it, he didn't seem to even know what his own point was. It's ok for Rashford to be lazy on the pitch because we've had different managers?

Was that his point?

Rubbish footballer and even worse pundit. Talks endlessly without saying anything. I now turn the sound down when he’s on except when I feel like having a laugh.

Exactly. I have a feeling the producers were in his ear encouraging him to carry on as this would be good social media clout.

He came across as a right prat with his position on Rashford yesterday. I'm still not sure what point he was trying to make.

It is weird how much he rates himself. Seen multiple times that he's claimed he's better than Neville.

I think he was encouraged to try and spin it for Rashford to create talking points. He didn't believe a word he was saying

Can remember him justifying it with something like “you played with Scholes and Giggs, I played with Sibierski and Jo” basically slagging off his teammates, he’s a clown

I think it was arranged by sky for him have a contrary view.

I think he should stick to his 'funny' and unserious persona, football analysis is too much for him.

Which led to Keane saying something like " Yeah and I bet they say the same about having to play with you"

It's funny how between all the many pundits he works with, a real selection of excellent players in their positions, he always somehow comes across as the most arrogant of any of them despite the fact if it wasn't for his media career he'd already have been forgotten. Between all the bigging himself up, I don't think i've ever heard him say anything remotely self deprecating despite the fact he has much to be humble about.

It wouldn't be so bad if he was a good analyst with good knowledge but he has less knowledge and insight than the average fan. The few bits of "the rest is football" I could manage I was continuously staggered by his ignorance of the past, he basically knows nothing about football before his period being a professional and even then the stuff he knows is essentially all related to his own experience.

The banter quartet on cbs is not that bad tbf. But I have never watched their actual football "analysis"

And what he "knows" about his period as a professional is pretty poor, lacks any substance, and is infinitely biased. He's just really bad at his job. I wrote this 4 years and 1 day ago, and nothing has changed:
He's probably a nice person in real life (although I could imagine him being that annoying loud friend), but as a pundit he's truly terrible. He has his schtick of laughing as loud as possible as soon as he's uncomfortable or has made a joke he finds funny, and his level of analysis is piss poor.

I was listening to his interview of Raheem Sterling on the BBC daily podcast earlier this morning - he's talking to a player I think is quite articulate, and the level of his questioning was awful, it was like he hadn't prepared the interview at all. He started by pointing out that City "don't score as many goals as I'm used to seeing so what is it, have you become more defensive minded or what?" And the subsequent questions were basically asking Sterling about his haircut, John Stones's dance moves and whether he should put Sterling as his captain in his fantasy football team.

I don't think you need pristine qualifications to be a decent pundit, but even by those pretty low standards, he's utterly incompetent at his job.
If anything, he's gotten lazier and worse.

Yeah, he's got worse. The banter character he played has worn off to the majority now.

I like him. Doesn’t take analysis as serious as Neville or JC, who often end up being biased or trying to hard to hide their bias.

Brings humour and light heartedness to punditry and sometimes makes good points without trying too hard. Probably the most natural amongst the pundits.

Natural at being a shite one, yes.

He does a much worse job of hiding his bias than either of those. In fact, I would say he doesn’t even hide it.

There must be a generation of kids growing up now who only know these two from the Sky coverage and what they each say about their playing days that probably assume they were at the same level as players and have similar medal collections.

sometimes the analysis should be serious, and then he’s out of his depth

Don’t mind pundits being biased, they’re football fans

I actually prefer if they don't hide their bias. Then you simply now that it is a biased opinion and can take this into context when a biased opinion comes around. Someone like Neville who tries so hard to appear unbiased that he comes around the other way really grinds my gears.

Remember when he burst onto the scene? Good times.
How pissy he got about Keane gently poking fun at that was hilarious. I used to sympathise with him sitting there with guys who have won everything when his career completely fizzled out before his mid 20s, but his unwarranted arrogance about it since then has killed that.

It is strange how he can be sat next to proper iconic world class former players like Roy Keane and Thierry Henry, or next to guys like Neville and to a slightly lesser extent Carragher who had great careers and won a lot of medals and yet he's the one who comes across regularly as the big head about his playing career.

He was basically finished by his mid 20s.

I think you are underestimating how he burst onto the scene. Do you not remember his header against Villa?

Least he's a PL and FA Cup winner, not a Robbie Savage case.

Protecting his mate. You can't destroy your boy on live TV. Pretty obvious to me.

Don't agree with this at all - he has several times admitted that he was a talent who never got the max out of his career. And he is one of few who doesn't take life too seriously. Why people complain about him when you have Gabby Agbonlahor, Graeme Souness, Dean Saunders etc is beyond me

I will play devil's advocate and say I partially agree with what richards said about rashford, he has become a scapegoat all too often and gary neville has kept bringing up rashford in a negative light over the past year (most overlap uploads) when it hasn't always been necessary

Was it Keane or Neville who quipped back “They’d probably say the same about playing with you.”

Loved that.

Agree with the above.

Nothing to do with race, more to do with Rashford being a mate. Same protection Foden gets when he’s meant to be this mega superstar.

Listen to him on the podcast with Shearer and Lineker, he repeatedly massively plays his career down.

Agreed..I listen to that too and he usually brags and boasts lightheartedly but constantly also downplays himself and his career and generally comes across as a decent guy.

Yep, I'm not really sure how anyone has a problem with him.

He’s absolutely dreadful. Must have a great agent as he’s everywhere.

Because their opinions are only broadcasted on Talksport so, for me, they're out of sight, out of mind. Whereas we pay a subscription fee for Sky so we expect more from their pundits. I was a big critic of Souness when he was on Sky.

This. He's a breath of fresh air

He's an braindead cretin with zero footballing input and only there for "vibes".

I can't stand the sight of him nor his laugh.

I think he isn’t a good pundit (his analysis is very basic and full of cliche) but he is the most comfortable in front of the camera by a distance and retains a younger audience, being so young and trendy himself.

He does seem like a really nice guy and he disarms those around him, brings others into conversation and is happy to be the butt of the joke.

He has even made Shearer and Lineker more interesting, which shows precisely what he is good at, namely, he is funny and brings out the personality in other pundits.
