Metro: Harry Maguire feeling strain of Manchester United captaincy

It's an embarrassment to the club that he was handed it without any merit just months after joining.

Mix that with the world record fee and all the pressure in the world was placed on him by the manager for no reason and we've suffered for it
It always felt like a very random appointment, guess his biggest quality was the fact that he’s English and had quite untouchable status considering his fee. Don’t know if armband means as much in the dressing room as we make it, but I have to say his pressers I always found rather cringy and he never stroke me as a captain material. No shame in giving it someone else

Four relegations vs four CLs

I think Maguire should lose the captaincy but the '4 relegations' stuff is what you'd expect to hear from a 12 year old opposition fan on Twitter. The first relegation attributed to him was in his first senior season with Sheffield United when he played a grand total of 371 minutes across 5 games. After that he was Sheffield United player of the season and in the League One team of the season for 3 years on the bounce. The season when he was 'relegated twice' he played a grand total of 91 minutes for Hull across 3 games in the Premier League before being loaned out to Wigan who were in the 23rd position in the Championship and 7 points from safety. He appeared in 16/42 league games for Wigan that season and when he left they were relegated in 23rd position and 9 points from safety. The season when he was first choice for Hull and played 29/38 games for them whilst they got relegated he was fans player of the year and players player of the year which got him his transfer to Leicester.

The metro.
My thoughts as well.

Regardless of form you know he’s not the type to let people know he’s feeling the strain of the captaincy even if he did.

He’s England captain as well, he wouldn’t let anybody think for a second he didn’t want the armband, would be damaging for him.

I’d absolutely make Ronaldo captain though, I mean it’s Ronaldo ffs.

He isn't England captain.

Rubbish story but although i'm not one to jump on the Maguire hate train (I think he's been mostly decent for us but he's in horrible form at the mo) the decision to give him captaincy virtually at the start of his United career was just ridiculous in my eyes. I can only think they hoped he'd be Steve Bruce or Vidic from the get go :wenger:

Wishful thinking. Even if we do get a competent manager, I reckon Fletcher and Murtagh would shoot down any effort to sell him unfortunately. But we can dream that Newcastle offer stupid money for him.

I say it in jest, but can also see it happening tbh.

He'd be a major coup for them. He'd probably get 500k a week there. United could save face by recouping what we paid, maybe even some profit.

Fingers crossed.

This is the Sami Hyypia captaincy all over again, but this is Manchester United enduring the problem instead of Liverpool. For the record, Hyypia was increasingly becoming shite as club captain for 2 years.

Either Bruno or Marcus should be captain depending on the identity we want to build the team around for the longer term.

When has a winger / sprinter striker ever been a captain?

Maguire being the captain and telling Ronaldo, Varane, Bruno and Pogba what to do is already a bit strange but him doing that while he makes mistake after mistake makes it even stranger.

Maguire does love pointing and sticking his hands up in the air though. That is captain-ish, i guess?

Neymar captains Brazil.

Good example. He's a horrible brat of a guy though, so how does that go?

I suppose for us it'd be Bruno or Ronaldo for sheer - 1)play every week and 2)character / respect from the rest.

He might be a brat but he commands respect because of his medals, his football and his cash money. Bruno is still lacking the medals so I'd give it to Ronaldo while we have him. No one better to represent United.

1. Hes very quiet on the field whatever happens in the game
2. Never came across as a leader
3. If there is any truth in this article it just further proves the point that he doesnt have the right mentality
4. He only got the captaincy because hes english and our marquee signing of that year
5. I agree obvious choice was Bruno or now Ronaldo
6. I even could have understood If it wasn't Bruno because I never like it if someone just joined the club and immedately gets the honour but Maguire was always a bad choice

Should have literally locked the thread after the first reply!:lol::lol:

so we need a Sgt Barnes?
Haha. Minus the murderous war crimes at the village we probably do!

Being a tad more serious, Keane is the closest we've had to that 'type' of character but he's long gone and there isn't anyone else close on the horizon.

I was thinking who would be Sgt Elias. If weren't for his temper issues probably Cantona but for that rationale alone it's a bit of a stretch.

What on earth does having money have to do with respect?

Neymar is also generally liked by his teammates, as much as strangers like ourselves may have a negative opinion about Neymar, he is popular among his teammates. And if I'm being I saw him on twitch playing video games and he seems like a very normal guy.

As Ole likes Football Manager, I hope he already found out that in FM22 Maguire is happy to step away from his capitancy favor of Ronaldo if you give him advance warning :)

Was never captain material anyway. Can't think of anyone else who was at the time either.

Could always take a leaf put of Valencia's book and give it up because of some superstition.

Yeah I think Neymar is generally likable, that's why he is so popular. He just dives and playacts a bit much.

De Gea or Bruno

I can understand Ole going for him as captain, he was playing well, was quite a dominant figure on the pitch, an he could elevate himself to even higher plain with good performances, but he seems to take a while to get into his stride in a season, but this year he has struggled, most obviously with the injury, but also seems to be either the weight of having Ronaldo, Sancho and Fernandes in the team, or the expectation of challenging for the title.
I also felt that Ole was wrong to bring him back for the Leicester game, when he patently was not fit, and I think that also shows that Ole is severely under pressure to win trophies this season, either from the board, or from himself, that he feels he needs his 'go to' players for as many games as possible.
For me, Varane would be the ideal captain, but with Fernandes and Ronaldo, you also have two other captains on the pitch.

If only we had a multiple champions league winner (with two teams), premier league and la liga winner, ballon d’or winner in the team to make captain. How easy that would be!

Posting Metro stories, the desperation to have a dig at Harry is evident.
He doesn't make it hard either to be fair.

I have no problem admitting that if a new manager comes in and pushes him out to the fringe I'd be happy about it.

I’d be happier if he was a success at the club, but each to their own…

Bruno is the obvious choice for captain. Wont buckle under the pressure, and is a natural leader.
