Is it heck.

It's not about spite, it's about being driven by elite competition.
Maybe, but I cant see any difference if Messi dropped off and it became Salah v Ronaldo over the last few years.
Ronaldo especially just wants to win.

I never understood that argument. Ronaldo isn't dominating the CL in his thirties to spite Messi
Never understood what argument? That a rival can't bring out the best in you? Watch Rush

I never understood that argument. Ronaldo isn't dominating the CL in his thirties to spite Messi

Without Messi, maybe he'd went to PSG 3 years ago to make them champions and earn a bick payday, and Real are the same team with Neymar or something.

Same can be said about Messi, after the second treble he might've had enough challenges and went to another club, but each other making the top rivalry in football even bigger might keep their drive on, and fuel their desire to keep going.

This is a bit of a bizarre line of reasoning. He's one of the best players in the world - why's he not going to play for one of the best teams in the world, and why is that club going to do anything else than ensure their play is centred around their best player? Ronaldo's played for two clubs but things have largely been the same for him - he's the best player at one of the world's foremost clubs, and so an extraordinary amount of their play is designed with the intention of helping him score because he's ridiculously good at doing so.

There's a huge difference between having never played for any other club but the one you literally grew up in, and having excelled at the world's two biggest clubs, neither of which fostered you from childhood. It shows that you can adapt, that there's no limit to what you can do. It shows a competitive mindset that transcends your comfort zone. There are many players who were fantastic for one club where everything was uniquely suited to them but didn't carry that with them to another club, and when assessing two players who are equally skilled at kicking a ball, these are the things that need to be looked at when judging them against eachother. If all else is equal, this is what sets them apart and what shows which one has proven more.

We can compare their statistics, and taking into account the fact that Ronaldo is two and a half years older, they come out roughly the same. But when we look at the circumstances surrounding their success, Ronaldo has simply proven more than Messi. There's no way around that. We have evidence that he can do it all, and we don't have that for Messi. We simply haven't seen him do it. That's just the way it is.

But Messi's demonstrated his ability to adapt in the way he's regularly torn apart teams with a variety of different playing styles at the highest level in Europe from just about every major footballing country. I'd understand the argument if Ronaldo had played for an average to meddling club, but that's not the case; like Messi he's spent the entirety of his prime at massive, renowned clubs who have focused their playing styles around him. As they should, due to his ability. The best way to judge them is by what they do with a football, irrespective of who they're playing/played for. These lines of arguments strike me as silly semantics that don't have much to do with the actual football aspect of their rivalry, which is surely the most important part.

Amazing how one goal can change 3% of people's minds. Crazy.

Something seems fishy about those numbers especially when Benzema has about 50 goals Raúl 70 sure the likes of Figo, Zidanne,The Phenom and others have also chipped in with a few over the years.

Aye, if those numbers are correct then we'd have been ahead of or about on the same level as Barca, Bayern and Real until recently. Which strikes me as being unlikely.

Nonsense.

It is obvious who is the better footballer. It just is.

You mean it's obvious who has more technical ability. It's not obvious at all who the better footballer is, especially due to how different they are. If you think it's obvious and this shouldn't even be a debate, then read my previous post again

Benzema is (almost) finished as a striker, and has been wank for a while. Bale was awesome for while, until his injuries taking his pace. It has nothing to do with Ronaldo. Then Higuain is famous as serial bottler, and his goalscoring record is inflated by playing in Serie A.

Haha...

Bale is still awesome & his pace hasn't diminished at all, scored a goal vs. Las Palmas in last weekend after a darting run towards the goal.

Benzema is not even an out-and-out striker in Madrid's current set-up. Has made most assists of all RM-players and does huge contributions in other aspects of the game for them. Definitely not finished and will be a starter and as long as Cristiano is with RM.

Higuain has been an incredible goalscorer in LaLiga & Serie A, he's just that good. You might have a pont about being a choker, but then so was Zlatan who used to be absolutely dreadful far too often in UCL KO-stage despite scoring goals in a much weaker Serie A while playing for Milan & Inter.

How can someone be better “no matter what”? Anyway, Ronaldo once again delivering in a clutch situation. Hand in all 3 goals. And what about that second one! Unbelievable player. Absolutely unbelievable.

Because I think he's the better player.

He's as good as a goal scorer as Ronaldo overall and a much better creator.

If I can run around my house in 15sec, does that mean that I'm faster around my house than Usain Bolt because he's never proven otherwise?

I'm not belittling his talent. I recognise he's one of the best players of all-time. In my post I've quite literally said he's arguably the most effective scorer of all-time.

Poachers/goal machines can get assists, too, though, so I'm not sure what that has to do with anything? Ronaldo's all-round game is still very good (and better than most players in the game) but it's fairly undeniable in recent years his overall influence on games has largely diminished in comparison to Messi. .....
You are doing it again. This season in the UCL he has created one less chance than Messi, having played only 1 more game, has more assists than Messi and has outscored him. But some how Messi is a certified all rounder and game influencer whilst CR7 is not. It doesn't make sense. Both players are comfortably the most influential attackers in the game today. Only Neymar and Suarez till recently could claim to be near to that level.

Messi has always had more influence over how his team's football is played because of his position and style. So I never get this argument of claiming CR7's influence on gaes has waned compared to Messi's. Yet they have never ever had the same influence on games. Even when both were pure wingers, it was still different.

It's telling that the Ballon d'Or wins coincide with Real's team becoming better than Barcelona's. The BdO has always been about rewarding the best player from the best team. Cannavaro winning in 2006 pretty much confirms that.

And no knock on Ronaldo but Michael Jordan is the most competitive athlete of all time.

I am a Bulls fan, and I think Jordan is clearly up there, but I don't think Ronaldo would have walked away in his prime like Jordan did.

I know his father died too and that played a part, but he's said a few times that his joy for the game went away. I don't think Ronaldo would ever walk like that imo.

And I don't disagree that Real are a better team than Barcelona.

If you take out CR7 and Messi from the two teams, I'd be shocked if Barcelona looked a competent team(especially with their bang average manager imo).

It was a back tap in, zero involvement in the play whatsoever.

Hehehe

Absolutely love how this thread only ever catches fire whenever Ronaldo does his thing bagging in goals left right and centre.

Should rename title to “Messi fanbois making excuses when CR7 keeps dominating” ...not that I have anything against Messi tho, just those obnoxious deluded homers

Do what all? Beat absolute shit like Stoke, Newcastle, Wigan and West Ham?

I can't believe people still peddle that BS. Especially given that Messi has routinely destroyed the PL's best teams. The notion that he has to "prove" anything is absurd and arrogant as feck.

Hehehe

:wenger:

It gets bumped by Ronaldo fans when Ronaldo has a good game.

What an absolutely shite comment.

ar you surprised, looking at most of his posts

You also happen to be part of the "deluded homers" group just on the other side.

I saw the following somewhere. Just thought we might find it interesting....

Ronaldo: Yes! Sporting CP in Portugal first division and Manchester United in BPL.
Messi: No. Only Barcelona.
Judge: Have any of you won a title with your national team?
Ronaldo: Yes! We won Portugal’s first ever European Championship.
Messi: No.

Judge: Who has scored more hat-tricks in La Liga?
Ronaldo: Me. 35 in La Liga.
Messi: Ronaldo has. I’ve scored 28.
Judge: Which is the most prestigious competition in club football?
Ronaldo: Champions League.
Messi: Champions League.
Judge: Have any of you won Champions League?
Ronaldo: Yes, 4 times in total with 2 different teams. Once with Man United and 3 times with Madrid.
Messi: Yes, 4 times as well with Barcelona only.
Judge: Who has scored more goals in the CL between the two of you?
Ronaldo: I’ve scored 114 goals in the CL.
Messi: I’ve scored 97.
Judge: Who has more assists between the two of you in the CL?
Ronaldo: I have 38.
Messi: Ronaldo has. I have 26.

Ronaldo: I think I have. 628 goals.
Messi: I’ve scored 595.
Judge: How many football records do each of you hold in total for both club and country?
Ronaldo: 146
Messi: 110
Judge: Well, after analyzing all of the facts that have been presented to me. I can only draw one conclusion when it comes to comparing you both as football players. That conclusion is that Ronaldo is the better player in almost every category. When it comes to goal scoring and accolades for both club and country, Ronaldo comes out on top. Messi, you are without a doubt Barcelona’s best player of all time. But certainly not the world’s best ever. That is clearly Ronaldo at the moment.
Messi: But I am younger than Ronaldo and haven’t played as many matches as him.
Judge: I understand that, but until you surpass his goal scoring records and win as many trophies both individually and collectively as he has, then Ronaldo will, according to the statistics, be considered as the best football player of all time. Until then, keep pushing on and you just might be able to achieve just as much as Ronaldo ! . Case close.

Can some one disagree with this high court of football?

Added in a question at the top for you which is a factor in the whole thing.

I don’t get this, both Messi and Ronaldo fans are exactly then same bar the player they like more. It’s Real fans calling Barcelona fans whiny or vice versa. It’s the pot calling the kettle black, especially you since all your contributions are aimed at wumming Messi fans.

Talking about the deluded.

My dream of Messi playing against Stoke on a wet windy cold Wednesday night at the Brittania is over once Stoke get relegated :(

The biggest problem on this thread is a worrying lack of understanding between qualitative and quantitative analysis.

CR fanatics, I’m afraid this means when Kroos/Modric/Isco et al play CR through and he shoots/crosses or plays a relatively simple pass, this assist - although statistically the same - isn’t qualitively the same as Messi taking on a few players or coming deep and playing a direct through-ball over 20 yards or similar. That’s just basic common sense regarding what level of footballing skill and ability is on display.

I think Ronaldo has always been the more effective goal scorer, but you’re all (unless this thread has driven me insane - a possibility, no doubt) talking about the best player, no? Though I have to say CR’s overhead-kick tonight, though no Trevor Sinclair, was utterly stunning and that can never be denied.

@VancouverUtdFan can you please stop using the term fanboi, let alone spelling it that way. You’re not a child.

And this thread must have added 5 pages between Sunday and yesterday, it doesn’t need ronaldo scoring a goal like that to catch fire.

phenomenal goal. Is it just me or do Real always seem to be getting outplayed and then hit worldie's from no where. Tell you what though, this is phenomenal team. almost feel sorry for all the other players. At least when Barca where in there pomp the likes of Xavi and Iniesta and Busquets got recognized. The media recognizes no other Real player. Marcelo is the best left back i've ever seen. And Kroos And Modirc arent far behind Xavi and Iniesta. (i do loathe Casemiro though, never since Xabi Alonso have i seen a player get away with so many tactical fouls. I hate conspiracy theories. But there is something seriously wrong with how many tactical fouls he is aloud to get away with}

@Eboue prefer my modified version with their age taken into account.

Edit: just read the bottom where it is
