Memphis Depay | Corinthians player

No. Dembele came on late but he played about 30 minutes and had better holdup play than Depay, and helped relieve the pressure as much as he could.

Anyway, Aouar was the more exciting player from the game yesterday. It'll be interesting to follow him if he moves to a bigger club this summer.
Not saying Memphis is awesome, but in his defence, this was his first match coming back from injury. He had not played competitive football since December, I think.

Depay is on the cover of this week's edition of France football. Headline: "I have nothing to prove."

Stay clear. We should have vetted him a lot better before signing him.

The guy is not good enough, and also doesn’t have he right personality, for a top club. One of those things has affected the other. Luckily no one at the club will even be contemplating re-signing him!

Every time I see this troubled kid it gives me a huge sense of relief we let him go. You might be able to train someone out of a certain football habit but you can never, ever change ones attitude and personality significantly. He has the classical grandeur and narcissistic view that he is the main character at all times unfortunately.

Yes before the got injured he was big.

9 goals in 12 games in the league.
5 goals in 5 games in the cl

who knows if he ever reaches that again after his ACL.

Watch people somehow still have a pop at him even though he admits it was his faults

LVG bought him IIRC? And presumably he was involved in the Dutch national team prior to joining Utd. So to be fair, the manager knew exactly what we were getting.

He’s has a good career, just isn't good enough for a team like Utd, especially on the left hand side of attack where pretty much everyone plays these days. If he could play on the right, then he would probably have been successful at Utd. ;-)

He would be the perfect backup to either of Martial or Rashford, but I am not sure he would want to come here to be a backup.

Yeah, it would probably have been difficult to go against the manager's wishes if some concerns about his dedication had filtered through to the money men. Obviously, there is no reason to believe that he caused any trouble or trained poorly at United, but when players with a failed stint in the PL and a modest career in the CL claim they have nothing to prove, the signs would probably have been there early on that this guy wouldn't go the extra mile to be successful. Even with a legend like Rooney, when he claimed he had nothing to prove towards the end of his stay here, you knew that we couldn't count on him any longer. To stay at the top, and be a valuable member of the best teams, you have to prove yourself every day, no matter how much you've won before. Fergie never let anyone rest on their laurels (well, ok, maybe in his final years he became a bit soft).

I always felt LvG lost faith in any players who were slightly inconsistent or youngsters. He started with Depay in the no.10 position, then moved him out wide, and he was very inconsistent at the start. Some good performances and moments but mostly underwhelming then he just seemed to not fancy him. Same with Di Maria, once he had a few bad games. Didn't give Rafael/Nani/Januzaj a fair crack but put his trust in steady players.

I think he'd be decent back up for the #10 and #9 positions as well able to play on the flanks, but don't think he'd want to sit on the bench when he's a starter at a CL team.

Never seen anything to suggest he's nothing but a good professional, but people just get that impression from social media. Quite honestly I think the main reason he failed here is that he's not a winger, he isn't explosive / tricky enough with his current bulk. Looks much better centrally.

Pressure to perform. Ole knows the club and the fans, he knows if he plays attacking football and plays youngsters he will have the fans behind him even if they do make mistakes. LVG never knew he had that luxury and was purely chasing immediate performance.

That said, I dont think Memphis would ever have made it here. He never looked like he could keep up with the pace.

LVG always has faith in youngster, he's just too subjective towards 'his players'. In 2001, He threw 4 strikers desperately to win against Ireland just because he didn't wanted to sacrifice Patrick Kluivert.
During his time here, 'His Kluivert' was Rooney. I'm not saying Memphis was better than Rooney, but He had to play the captain as no. 10 and proving he was not mistaken by choosing him as our leader.

He´s been bad since his acl, I really hope he can come back from his pre-acl form.

Thought he was good out of possession last night. Man marked Rodri out of the game.

He's much better as a 2nd striker. His holdup play as CF is average at best and he still looks weak against most defenders.

He's not a CF though is he, doesn't have the right frame to be a CF. It's not a surprise it didn't work out for him here as he's never a winger either, his best position is quite clearly a false 9 meaning he's at the perfect club for him. He'd absolutely flop at Dortmund if he moved there imo

He’s just not fit yet.

the good sign is he still looks mobile and strong, just needs to build up his fitness.

According to Saha who loves talking to the press nowerdays says Depay is motivated to return to utd and prove himself.

We have some kind of buy back of sorts do the question is. Should we bring bring him back?

I do think be has matured massively since being in France and we need squad depth because our subs bench is bare bones right now

The problem we have is we seem to do nothing when other teams are strengthening. Werner and Ziyech to Chelsea and possibly Havertz just seems like they will be massively transformed for what seems to be little money considering our bad transfers of the past.

During this new ole rebuild I love the players we are bringing in because they are the right fit albeit expensive but it's the lack of frugal spending on players that could shock us and help with our squad depth.

We have no match winners it seems on the bench and if we bring him back I feel that he could provide some strong competition now if he is determined to prove us all wrong.

Apparently Thiago Almada is available pretty cheap and that's the kind of signing we need here and there like chicharito.

But anyways, I do feel like depay would be a much different player now if we signed him again.

I'd rather depay over signing nobody

What do you guys think?

I think he got the Utd move too early.

Right now with a more clear position and more motivation, I'd definitely take him to rotate/ compete in the forward positions.

The question is what's the buyback amount, and is it good value?

Isn’t his buyback only 30m? Reckon he’d be great in this team. Need another striker anyway in case one gets injured the whole attack collapses.

If it's just 30M then it's fantastic business.

Memphis + Sancho along with the others is a pretty complete attack. With the added benefit of stealing a reported target from BVB :D

I think it's around 30m, I mean we sold him for a snip at 16m so I'm sure Lyon would entertain any bid we mad over 25m really.

We should bring him back and send Daniel James there on loan to sweeten the deal. I do like memphis and although he loves to make rap videos etc... I still feel he is much more rounded and serious about his football.

We just need this depth that other bigger teams seems to always get.

I also feel if he came back we'd sub him on for Rashford when he's having a stinker and would be effective. Especially with how he plays now I reckon it would create the competition him and martial need.

Apart from keepers take one player out of the starting 11 and it gets sketchy and I can't help but feel this sancho deal is dead. It's just too much for us to afford considering we always want to pay in installments and dortmund saying no.

Last time we qualified for the champions league we failed to strengthen until we didn't get champions league. I just don't get it.

If we can get him for 30m then that would be perfect.

Problem is I don’t think he’ll want to be a backup. Especially when he’s already playing for a CL team.

But if he’s willing, 30M would be a great move from us. Would be a fantastic bench option for us.

He's improved playing more centrally, which is now occupied by Martial and Bruno. Would he be as effective as a left forward or right forward while filling in for Bruno? It's more like a round hole - square peg scenario for Memphis. He probably doesn't want to come off the bench and his best position is as the center forward or advance central midfielder/10/SS that is Bruno.

He has no place here bar the bench considering the position he plays in at the moment for both Lyon and Netherlands.

A lot of people have been complaining about bench quality. So if he's ready to rotate (debatable) then he definitely has a place here for 30M.

No reason for him to agree to drop to the bench when he's a starter now, and can wait for another's team offer where he can play as a starter too.

Lyon are not in the CL next year.

That's true. But if he's promised a lot of games in rotation with the front 3, then I'm sure he wouldn't mind being part of a 4-5 man rotation of him, Rashford, Martial, and maybe Sancho.

Just scored a beauty right before half-time.
