Why is Ajax only asking €75 million? Surely they'd want to sell him for as much as possible? Does De Ligt have some kind of release clause, or is it a verbal agreement with the player?

Seems like a verbal agreement or mutual understanding thing. Both sides have huge respect for each other, and Ajax knows De Ligt has to move if he wants to keep improving as a player. Similar to how there was word Roy Hodgson wanted AWB to move to become a better player.
Agree. Also, Ajax needs to free up space, to bring in the next batch of players to sell off. Ajax's model is to train players and then sell them.
It is, on the one hand, very gracious. It's also realistic - 75 mil to spend on recruiting for the Dutch league is the equivalent of 200-300 in another. So, set a reasonable price and go from there.

Extremely gracious! I like it. A club not being a glutton for profit? I can't think of one club in the EPL that is like this. In fact, over here it would probably be a sign of weakness.

De Ligt has to have said he has no interest in coming here. It's the only explanation.

Didn't they personal agreement with De Ligt that he can choose his next club? If that's the case they can only deal with what Juve have to offer.
I think our interest was genuine especially when we went in with a high offer straight away, but once the other teams offered similar money we just had nothing else to offer apart from guaranteed first team football.

Ajax should be looking at the price Atletico just paid for João Felix. Same generational type talent who has proven it more on the bigger stage.

Probably because he’s been on the radar of clubs for a few years and they told him to stick around then they’d let him leave for a reasonable price. But £50m is a piss take from Juve.

I thought Barca and Madrid thought they were god's gifts to the world, Juventus are on an even different level riding their own knobs.

Rooney - 25.6 million in 2004 - transfer record at that time was 45.6 million and we’d just sold Veron and Beckham the year before.
Rio - 34 Million in 2002 - getting higher but he was great that year and is/was a class act.

Would argue that in a global context we never broke the bank. We certainly didn’t do crazy wages. Every player took the hit to come to a club like United. They weren’t on a fiver an hour but they could have earned more elsewhere.
I would note that those buys all turned out very well for us. Veron a notable exception. It shows that we identified who we wanted and got them or we waited (Ruud). We didn’t panic buy.
We also bought people like Ole, Vidic and Evra who every one would be gurning about today because they weren’t expensive or flashy enough. They however did fit the system.

You have to admire Juve's cheekiness here. 75m euros is a bargain and no-brainer for De Ligt when the likes of Harry Maguire cost over 80m pounds, and they come in with 50m + bonuses offer. Aren't they afraid Ajax will simply stop negotiating after this insulting bid?
I don't want to derail the thread. I agree on some of your points, but RVP was in his final year, so 24m was a helluva lot. 25m for a young and inexperienced Rooney could also be considered to be a bit of a bank-breaker. Fergie bought well, but we have never been shy in paying top-dollar.
300k/week for De Ligt would not "break" our club, as you elegantly put. His marketing potential is immeasurable and he would be a statement signing, signalling to the world that we're still a player in the market and not just a club used by agents to earn bigger contracts for their players.
Classic negotiation tactic. (i) Get an greement with the player. (ii) Get in talks with the club and put the "he only wants to us" pistole to their chest.
Part of the problem is how Ajax have framed themselves as being honorable and not letting price dictate or rather pressure where he moves.
Thing is, even if you set the price at 100mil, there would still be a choice. It's important for Ajax to realize that, and maybe they do. However, the prices being floated around seem like a gross underpayment going by today's market prices and his brand.

Juve pays the players big money, not other clubs. And it's obvious that after the 100 million spent on Ronaldo, they don't have the same liquidity this year (and no, FIAT owns Juve but cannot pay for its players. FIAT Chrysler needs to invest money on itself, not a football club owned by some its owners/shareholders).
Still think he ends in Juventus. Serie A with it's slower tempo and bigger focus on defending as a team is much better for a central defender. He can win the Serie A every year and be guaranteed CL football (we can alas offer neither). And 3 years from now, he'll end up in Barcelona as Pique's succesor.
