Yeah it's truly a shame we didn't think about this two seasons back when it would have been a great option.

It really is. De Jong and De Light are going to boss it at Barca for years. Imagine if we had bought the duo.

You just can't fathom the stupidity of our club two seasons ago we play against Ajax in a final Sanchez was decent, De Ligt was outstanding in the game. Sanchez goes to spurs, we end up signing Lindelof who struggles and was terrible in his first season, since then has shown that at best he'll be a decent feature for the squad in years to come.

Present times De Ligt has established himself in two years as a world class defender, will walk into any central defensive pairing the contrast between him and our entire set of defenders night and day. The entire world are interested now fans and media alike are harping plaudits.

You are now seeing why our transfer policy has been diabolical. We give impetus to the manager too much and miss out on players who would have had minimal competition for signatures, we was recommended Goretzka for free and went against it last season. We are now going to see the exact same structure supercede itself with Solskjaer, all targets he wants and not a collective ambition with a DOF who will always be at the club regardless of the manager.

We are already set up to fail next season, Einstein's theory of doing the same thing expecting different results, nothings changed.

I don’t know why people keep repeating stuff like this.

There’s no guarantee a DoF will be at a club any longer than a manager.

And which DoFs would have definitely bought De Ligt? I mean, he hasn’t even gone anywhere yet.

It’s so tiresome.

Whilst he is a good Player it's going to hurt me watch us buy Umtiti whilst De ligt goes to Barca.

I'm hoping the lad is up for a challenge at somewhere 'different' but all it is is wishful thinking.

Umtiti would improve United's back line massively. Im puzzled as to why United is not being linked with MDL though.

Isnt Umtitis knee comparable to Hargreaves? Probably a reason they wanna get rid of him.

Could be, its a bit of a mysterious injury but it hasn't repeated enough times to get to Hargreaves territory yet. Id take De Ligt over him because of his potential and age but Umtiti is a quality player as well

I prefer lenglet over Umtiti.

He would be awesome to have but his Barca bound, we should have went for him when we won the EL. Even if it was just to buy him and let him develop in Ajax then come to us at a later date.

It questions me what are scouts are doing, surely he would have been under our radar and I do get it not all scouts get it right. He surely would have been presented to Mourinho but he just didn’t fancy him and now we miss out on another talent.

I love how people think we should have signed de ligt after the Europa final, Like he would the same player he is now. See what happen to Eric and victor, the kid would sitting on the bench next to Daley blind wondering if he can come back to Ajax and the redcafe would have 100 pages on the thread. “Why did we sign de ligt?”, Dutch Stones, Fulham quality.

I remember when ajax dunked us out of the Europa league several years back and people laughed at me when I said Vertongen would do well in the premier league and that United should sign him.

Exactly right. We can't take a risk on anyone who might have a long term, degenerative knee problem. Our next CB signing has to work out and become a mainstay of our side for several seasons.

if i were running United, my first move would be to throw 150m at Ajax for De Ligt. I'm weirdly confident he'd be open to the move.

despite his young age, De Ligt would not only bring his world class quality as a centreback but also a 'power'/grit that United seem to be missing entirely in this squad

Haven't Ajax said that they don't want a bidding war, they want him to go to whichever club he wants. So 150 mil from United might mean nothing if his heart is set on Barcelona and they offer say 90 mil.

My hope at the time we beat PSG was that VDS might be recommending United as a place to go make his name. Now it would be a step down from Ajax and a huge drop from the potential role he might play in Barcelona with pique hitting his mid 30s.

Barca is a done deal. Without them, i would say maybe, but no way would he come here when they are interested and in advanced talks. Plus our CEO is out of his depth football wise

Don't need to spend that much. Watch Barca buy him for half that fee before the summer window even opens.

I think you are overestimating De Ligt's possible willingness to join a club which in all likeliness misses out Champions League football next season and is going through a huge crisis at the moment which will probably take a decade or so to solve.

Especially when pretty much every top club in Europe is willing to sign him.

nope  that's literally just Catalan press working overtime for keep Barca to keep potential competitors away.

De Ligt isn't even a fan of Barca nor Spanish football. He's said before that he doesn't even watch La Liga (when De Jong said he preferred La Liga over the Prem), and that English football has the best football culture/'atmosphere' in his eyes.

Also this interview from a couple years ago:

De Ligt's English was, he says, pretty bad before he joined the first team. But by speaking it and particularly by reading English books, it's made substantial improvements. "I prefer those to Dutch books because they contain far more beautiful expressions and phrases." He particularly enjoys football autobiographies and has read several. "From Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and John Terry to Bobby Moore. When I read them, I just feel football. When they talk about "Reading the game" or a "towering defender". Doesn't that sound far better in English? Stunning!/

And the Sports chief of De Telegraaf saying the other day that apparently he/his entourage is surprised no English club has come knocking

Why would you do this to us? Its the hope that kills you!

Couldn't Rio offer to sign his copy of the book... maybe take him on the Old Trafford tour? That would still be more than what Ed offers.

If it's true that we haven't even made an attempt to sign him, I'd absolutely believe it. That's the level of confidence I have on Woody to feck it up. We should at least make a decent bid and then let him decide.

I'd spend whatever it took to get him here. I'd probably make him captain as well.

We can't afford anyone else in England to get him.

If the scouse got him alongside VvD it'd be disgusting.

Yep, throw a blank cheque at Ajax and De Ligt. United broke the world record for Stam and Ferdinand back in the day, and we shouldn't hesitate to similarly smash Van Dijk's erstwhile record for De Ligt. By proportion, the club allocated roughly ⅕th of its turnover towards Rio's transfer fee in 2002 — which equates to about €130 million for the current year, and that might just put us in a very favorable position, unless he's set on joining another club and the negotiations are at a relatively advanced stage. If De Ligt is already one of the best centerbacks in club football, and arguably the best young centerback since Nesta at Lazio, imagine how imperious he's going to be at his peak and how long he could serve the club as a footballer and as a leader.

Selling the United “project” to the player himself would be the crucial (and most difficult) part, however — any elite or to-be elite player would be justifiably wary of a club that is going through an extremely tumultuous period with no outward signs of the management having a coherent plan to set things right (on top of two of the best players being linked with moves to other teams...with one of them being represented by De Ligt's facilitator Raiola, no less), especially if we miss out on Champions League qualification (which should be the bare minimum for a club of United's stature/financial clout).

How haven't we even enquired about him? he's clearly planning on coming to England and clearly has a soft spot for us.

How do you know we haven't? I've read stories (as that's what they are) that have stated we've been interested in him as a player for years.

I don't think anywhere reputable has actually reported that, you'd think every single club worth their salt would have made a number of enquiries if he were available and open to somewhere other than Barca.

This. De Ligt is being wooed by every major club in Europe. To think that we are not "in" for him is plain stupidity. We will have offered the world for him financially. It will come down to where he wants to go himself though and it seems like its going to be Barcelona.

I like your positivity. You almost convince me it is doable. We all know how hard that second paragraph is going to be currently. A fresh project can be appealing to some though.

Would stay well clear of us if he had any sense.

I don't think any top players are going to look our way, see 7 defeats in 9, no goals in 5 hours and Europa League football under a novice coach, and think - "yes, that is where I want to be!"

He's a good age, but too high profile for us this summer.
