Matt Judge resigns from role as Manchester United’s Head of Corporate Development

Judge doesn't decide who gets a new contract, or what transfer fee is paid, Woodward did, with the Glazers 'blessings, once Woodward approves the decision, then Judge's task is to go and negotiate terms, and it is also Woodward who decided the extent of these terms, even in transfer fees, it was Woodward who decided those.

Judge was basically an employee working at the behest of his employer, he is a banker who has zero to limited football knowledge, and probably limited connections (Clubs & Agents) to negotiate transfers and contracts, he added no value in his work and its good news to see him leave.

Hopefully he is replaced by a competent professional who is well versed in the football market and is able to get the best deals for the club.

My comments above are based on Whitwell's tweet with the linked article, the main part is:

The one constant is that while he could be considered United’s gatekeeper on signings, the genuine authority lies elsewhere.

“He’s pleasant, he’s a listener; he gets the information, passes it on to the right people, and gives you the feedback,” says one agent of a player United were considering. “He’s a conduit. ‘Sorry, don’t think we can do that’. Finds out, comes back. ‘I think we can do this’.”

The “right people” can be taken as Woodward and Joel Glazer, who speak to each other almost daily. Glazer has ultimate oversight on all spending and was influential in setting the limits for the pursuits of Jadon Sancho, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Erling Haaland.

Any chance this is in somehow an indication that the leeches are selling up? I see that Jim Ratcliffe had his 4bn bid for Chelsea rejected and now im just adding 1 plus 1 and coming up with 4bn :D

We won't know for sure if RR had direct involvements in all of these behind-the-scenes changes, but I welcome it. Just hope the club will find competent replacements now.

Whitwell not giving this a positive spin.

The most relevant point of that article from our POV going forward is the contrast drawn between the micromanaging at United (where our deals were slowed by our principal negotiator having to constantly check back with the real decision makers and recruitment team) and the Chelsea negotiator being empowered to be more decisive and swift.

In which case when we replace Judge it can't just be a personnel change, it has to be a change in how we actually operate in negotiations.

"Corporate Development" is quite vague, does anyone know exactly what his role was & how does it sit in our hierarchy?

Woodward's man is gone. Hopefully his DOF will follow

The below is in that Whitwell article:

"Patrice Evra detonated much remaining mystery in a 20-minute video posted on Instagram in the aftermath of the 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in September. Former United full-back Evra laid into his old club’s recruitment strategy and had a personal message too: “A sporting director from a top football club called me and asked me to tell Matthew Judge to answer his phone.”

For some in the game who have tried in vain to reach Judge, there were knowing smiles.

It is fair to recognise, as one agent says, that as an in-demand executive, “You’re not gonna speak to every Tom, Dick and Harry”. Indeed, Judge has taken calls from representatives proposing players only to see United subsequently linked with them publicly. AC Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu was a recent example.

But pinning Judge down can be difficult, even for those counterparts who have active matters to progress."

Sounds like he was shite, no?

Exactly, Judge was basically a mailman, had no power to decide anything, he just filtered info that went to his bosses

There needs to be a set budget for the footballing operation to do with as they wish. Only if they need more than that should sign off be required.

Whitwell is saying judge was the go to guy for agents but I’m fairly sure I’ve read before that agents struggled with knowing who to go to and Murtough would be handling that in future. I’m certain Whitwell is the one who said it too. It’s incredibly odd that after years of saying we have a confused structure that when we’re getting rid of people the very same journalists are saying we’re in turmoil.

While change is great, it doesn't sound like anything will be changing with Joel Glazer having an input in every new contract renewal or transfer move

So if Judge was deemed as a powerful individual, which was the case since 2014.

That was the first year of LVG and the beginning of some of the most bizarre transfers and transfer rumors the past 25 years.

2014/15 (LVG): Herrera and the infamous 'agents/posse' showing up to La Liga office and that release clause, no release clause; di Maria's transfer; Falcao's transfer after having major knee surgery and huge loan wages, Rojo in
2015/16 (LVG): Depay, Schneiderlin, Martial IN. Darmian, Scheweinsteiger, and Romero were relatively low fees
2016/17 (Mourinho): Bailly, Mkhitaryan, Pogba IN w/Zlatan on a free - Schneiderlin was sold for close to his original transfer in fee, but still at a loss and Depay was sold for much less than his original transfer fee in
2017/18 (Mourinho): Lindelof, Lukaku, Matic, Sanchez IN
2018/19 (Mourinho/Ole): Dalot, Fred IN / Blind and Fellaini out
2019/20 (Ole): James, AWB, Maguire, Bruno IN / Lukaku, Young, Darmian out - Herrera, Valencia leaves on frees
2020/21 (Ole): VDB, Telles, Pellistri, Diallo IN - Cavani free (in) / Sanchez bought out, Smalling to Roma, Rojo out.

And the average first-team player salary of the club has slowly increased since 14/15 from around $5M GBP to over $6M GBP. So paying more to players for inconsistent output. And we know there are too many players who shouldn't be paid that much. Yet the club can afford to pay these huge salaries and it doesn't really impact them, until they try to offload the players.

Player identification, player recruitment, player salary, contracted player movement (in/out), etc. Judge has played a powerful role and it's be extremely inefficient.

So shit it's beggars belief he was given the role in the first place, was given it on no merit but being Woodward uni pal.

Do we have posters still saying the club isn’t making meaningful change?

Woodward, Judge, Lawlor, Bout. All gone. Whole new set up and streamlined process.

Perfect timing with EtH arriving and everything being put in place to make this work.

Absolutely fantastic news. What Ralf has been saying is correct and clearly being acted upon. No wonder he’s been so vocal lately.

Could we finally be learning? Surely not?! Maybe profits are taking a hit...

Wonder if Ralf sticking around and having first hand knowledge of our ineptitude on every level has put the wind up people

Maybe ETH, who is so used to a proper FOOTBALLING at Ajax insisted on a shake up before joining, I would have.

I've said a few times I want a proper footballing structure put in place alongside a proper clear out of bad apples and not fit for purpose players. Stop extending contracts of those that should be moved on, leaving us saddled with them eg Jones.

A proper wage structure wouldn't go amiss either. Only Ronaldo justifies the wages he's on.

I say, this is all jolly exciting news, can it be we are actually beginning to act like a proper football club ?

It doesn't seem good timing losing the chief negotiator just ahead of a crucial summer.

Only had the job because he was a chum of Woodwards (much like most of the Government Cabinet I guess), another step in the right direction

I read all this as power shifting to Murtough (and Rangnick the consultant), and all this individuals don't fancy working under him, since they use to answer to only Woodward previously.

Mitten has said that Bout and Lawlor had nothing to do with RR, yet people are crediting him with these changes. The same applies to the appointment of ETH which RR is said to have endorsed ETH but had little influence.

More the work of Murtogh it seems.

Was Matt Judge the one who apparently couldn’t be contacted on possible or potential transfers because his phone was turned off? I think it was Evra who said it

To us, it all seems like glorious revolution but it's probably utter fecking chaos inside the club.
True. But accountability and hence change is necessary. The Woodward era at United was one of the biggest disaster in sports management.

All these changes are well and good but I’ve got grave concerns about who is going to secure our next spicy wonton contract!
I thought Arnold did most of that anyway?

Isn't he divesting himself of the football stuff because he's prepared to admit he'd be crap at it (unlike Woodward, who seemed to think he wasn't) and so he can concentrate on the spicy wontons

He could only cope with one transfer a month, so anything better than that got to be good. Seems like revolution not evolution to me

This is also my reading of it.

Yes, it was posted above.

Plus also what is so telling but is missed from the David Ornstein article is he is serving his notice period.

Meaning it's a change already communicated and accepted, which means it is NOT a today's decision but a decision made some time back but it's breaking today.

It's extremely positive, Ralf tenure has exposed alot of things.
1. Mercenaries players
2. Incompetent management staff

If this is evidence of a change in our transfer and contract renewal policy I am all for it. Old Trafford is full of bluffers from the board down. The worst run big club in Europe.

Assume this is the role Mitchell will be taking then
