Matt Judge resigns from role as Manchester United’s Head of Corporate Development

Imagine resigning from a high responsibility job and your company doesn't even see the need to replace you. How bad do you have to be at your job for that to happen?

That's going to be bad. If you can't get the summer right it doesn't really matter how many changes you make, you still end up on the losing side John. Better get Mitchell in !!

We know there's a deputy sporting director on the way who will help with Mitchell, and I presume the like for like replacement doesn't necessarily mean we aren't replacing him full stop. More likely it'll be a role where negotiations are a small part of that, rather than the main thing.

Does any other club have this head of negotiations role anyway?

Is there solid evidence Mitchell is coming? I’ve been extremely busy this last week and only learnt about Judge this morning. So I’m behind on United news.

As for head of negotiations or aquasitions to me I think that would fall under the remit of a DOF, dealing with agents and negotiating general fees. Then the info would be sent to the clubs legal teams to draw up a contract. Maybe clubs have a figure head of the legal team to take some strain off of say a DOF or like we had with Woodward.

Either way it will be interesting to see how this situation pans out and evolves. Hopefully we get it right and start to move forward in a positive manner. It’s somewhat exciting but I’ve come to learn over the past decade or so never to get your hopes up when it comes to United.

Is it possible to explain this statement using facts or shall we just go with your personal emotions which in the light of things have absolutely no relevance whatsoever?
Well the facts are we’re weeks away from the summer window and may have already started sounding out targets, which we’re now going to have to do without our chief negotiator. Who, by all accounts, was a point of contact for agents and footballers. In future maybe you could also word your posts to not be so condescending.

No football was never their priority however the situation had grown so dire that they couldn't do otherwise.

Both of us can agree that football wasn't their priority. If it was their priority, we wouldn't be in this mess for more than 8 years.

To be fair a ball over the top seems to confuse Rangnick.

Getting Rangnick as temporary manager was a mistake. Temporary managers are hired to stir the ship to some sort of safety. You simply don't go for someone whose football style is completely different to what the team is used to and is built upon our weaknesses especially mid way throughout the season. Having said Rangnick is one of the finest and most experienced sporting directors in the world. If he can't figure out what Fletcher does then who can?

Who exactly? The only person I could think of was Sir Bobby Charlton who was quite elderly himself. Woodward came in and SAF practically recommended Moyes to him. Moyes went 'rogue' by firing most of Sir Alex's man and since we had a system were the manager called most of the shots (football wise) we agreed to his plan. What was left was a manager and his coaching staff all of whom were clearly out of depth. I can understand Sir Alex for not wanting overheads (DOF, technical directors etc). However this mess was long coming. SAF warned us about it and Gill left the sinking ship before it dragged him down with it.

Dont take me wrong, Woodward made LOOOOAAAAADDDDDDS of mistakes. However our previous system could only work with SAF on board
I though Gill was still in post when Moyes was appointed?

Nah Gill and SAF left together. I recall SAF saying in an interview that he went to see Gill in Feb ‘13. Gill told him that he was leaving at the end of the season. SAF said something along the lines of ‘oh no you don’t, I’m retiring first’.

In hindsight David Gill should have stayed on for another season to help with the transition but past is the past now

I believe that Gill and SAF left at roughly the same time
Yeah. So Moyes was in post before Woodward.

Moyes was appointed before SAF left; remember the Support Your New Manager speech. So presumably he was appointed by a soon-to-be-leaving Gill.

I suppose you could argue that SAF dropped Gill in it, by leaving when he did. But Gill bears most of the blame for me. He should have made sure that both Moyes and Woodward were properly “bedded in” and that the transition to both was properly understood. The fact that everyone at the club (including SAF) was taken completely by surprise when Moyes binned off all the backroom staff is proof that this wasn’t done.

What does Fletcher know about contract negotiation?

I assume Judge's role was limited to negotiating fees, contracts etc. and he wasn't involved in the decision making process around who to sign / award contracts to.

He gets some flak for Sanchez but it was one of those Aaron Ramsey type deals where the fee was super cheap and we ended up paying in wages.

Said “some” of his responsibilities. To assume is to make an ass of u and me.

Giving someone praise based on your own suspicions? Geez no wonder we are totally fecked. The last 3 members of staff have left the club on their own accord yet this guy is getting praise.

If you believe they resigned, you'll believe anything.

Fletcher is the one thing that's keeping me from being full on positive about these changes.

We don't know his role but my ideal role for him is none. Prove yourself somewhere and better yet, tell us exactly what he's supposed to be doing at this point in time - he seems to have his hand in all the pots and is an expert in nothing whatsoever.

The one hope is that ten Hag has shown no desire to tolerate mediocrity, so I'm sure if Fletcher is really failing he'll be kicked out.

Wouldn't take this to mean Fletcher is negotiating contracts and transfers. Firstly, this is Dailymail. Secondly, Judge's role was very broad, the aspects Fletcher will be involved with will be on recruitment rather than negotiating fees.

Let's see if getting rid of Judge will mean the club can work on more than 1 deal at a time.

I think it is far more important to work on the RIGHT deal at any time. No point signing Bailey, Telles, Dalot, AWB who are not good enough to start, and I am not even challenging the lots of Lindelof, Maguire, Fred, Martial who have questionable quality, but at least they are good enough to be picked.

From the sounds of that Ornstein article it’s Judge himself who decided to step down rather than the club binning him as part of some sort of revamp.
If it's in expectation of a revamp, sounds more like he walked before he was pushed.

Oh for fecks sake. One step forward and two steps back. Why would Fletcher be any good at negotiating contracts and fees for Manchester United? Because other aspects of recruitment other than that should be up to Ten Hag and his scouts.
It was reported that he was integral in pitching to Varane’s team and therefore signing him. So if it’s him being one of the first points of contact (rather than Judge who wouldn’t even pick up his phone according to Evra) than again why is that a huge deal.

Wasn't that because he wouldn't let him be DoF?
Evra mentioned how a director at a big club rang him to ask Matt Judge to answer his phone. He also said that he's responsible for us paying extortionate fees for average players. He made a general point that players don't want to be talking to lawyers when it comes to a potential transfer as all they talk about is number and not football which is part of the reason we've struggled in the market.

It says recruitment process. That's very broad and doesn't necessarily mean negotiate transfer fees. The recruitment process will have many aspects to it, such as some level of involvement with scouting, maybe having initial discussions with the player, explaining what the club is about, where it wants to be and how said player can play a part etc etc

You guys are funny. I mean there are a lot of normal people in life doing HR salary negotiations.

G.Nev said he sorted out his brother’s contract for Everton. We have Rangnick as a consultant who has helped build clubs. All Fletcher needs to do is be available (answer the phone whenever possible unlike some:smirk:), a good liaison, and figure out a strategy with the club on how we retain contracts within the club and how much we offer new players. It’s really not that hard especially with the help of external consultants.

We have lawyers to sort out the T’s & C’s

If we stop the idiotic policy which dumb and dumber enacted to allow us to keep the likes of Jones, Mata, etc and reward championship level players with the highest wages in the game, how will the Glazers react?

As in, if a KPI is to keep assets, will the replacements for the Bristol Uni Ballbag Brigade be measured on the same KPIs?

I’m genuinely worried that the incoming people will have to pander to the same idiotic policies.

That is pretty terrible.
Mad logic isn't it?. This is not real estate or the stock market. It's performance on the pitch that creates value. And while not allowing people to leave on a free is sound, sometimes you just have to accept it in order to free up wage spending. It's addition by substraction. It's what it is when you're a club of our size and the number of clubs willing to pay us what we want for our players can be counted with the fingers in one hand.

That is pretty terrible.
Considering Woodward is supposed to be some amazing hot shot financier, it does make you wonder why he never saw footballers as depreciating assets. Remarkable

He probably thought players are like gold.
