In limbo with Cobb
Read recently that we're being linked with him and at 23 he has the potential to be one of the worlds best CB's although in this story he ruled himself out of a move to United. Sorry, can't remember the source it was either the Telegraph or M.E.N.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Read recently he may come back to United some day, one of the world's best players!!!! Unfortunately the story said he was quite settled, and it was all down to Fergie retiring and Mourinho joining and the Glazers giving him the money. It was somewhere on the internet.

Thought he was pretty good today vs Portugal. Almost got burned by the long ball to Oliveira leading to the Varala chance and although his rampaging up the field was enjoyable to watch he turned the ball over twice (once an offside on Ozil, the second to Ronaldo for a counter). Some nice clearing headers from crosses aswell.

Glad he was picked over Mertesacker and am sure he will gain confidence as the tournament progresses.

Yeah he was awesome, crazy they were gonna start Mertesacker over him.

B-E-A-S-T

Probably been the best defender in Europe over the past two year, him Kompany and Silva anyway I guess, though non of them have had a great run in the CL really. But he's easily in that tier, looked nervous today(maybe he was shocked to start or something, plenty saying Mertasacker was gonna start), but he came into his own in time.

I was very impressed with him, powerful burst of speed, good anticipation on crosses and composed in possession when distributing.

Yep we should have bought bumholes instead of sack o' merde.

Great defender no doubt. Everyone who watched the Bundesliga over the last couple of years knew it and it was only a matter of time until his qualities would show for the national team as well.

Too bad he has just signed a new contract with Dortmund and will probably cost 40+ mio. € if someone wants him now.

Bayern must be kicking themselves for letting him go, immense defender.

No - they are not. If Hummels would not have gone on loan Badstuber would not have gotten a professional contract. Hummels has made a year for the professionals but did not get any playing time with Demichelis, Lucio, van Buyten and then Breno (who was the most looked after young defender talent then) in front of him. Badstuber then was lucky that van Gaal arrived at Munich - Lucio did not like that very much and went - what Demichelis did the year after...

See it like this - Bayern would not have had the guts to put their stack on two young defenders - I doubt that even a van Gaal would have. You say that when he withdraw Alaba again after one or two terrible matches.

The Dortmund fans believe they have the better one of them - the Bayern fans believe that they have...

Actually that was Hummels first real good match for Germany. He had some real bad ones.

Hummels was very highly rated as a youngster, it was during the Klinsmann period when they got rid of him, i have no doubt whatsoever that both would have made the breakthrough.

Of course Bayern are kicking themselves......him away from Dortmund would pretty much hand Bayern the the last two titles, yes Dortmund have had other standout performers, but so have we in that time.....we lost the title when the heartbeat in Vidic was gone.

Hummels is def atm one of the top 5 defenders out there and only 23 but I have a good feeling he will at least stay another 2 years with Dortmund unless someone is willing to splash some ridiculous money at Dortmund for him and I'm talking like 40+ mio. here.

So here is the plan: Let's get Klopp to replace SAF in 2 years and he is going to bring Hummels, Götze and Lewandowski with him. Shouldn't cost us more then 120 mil. :p

Hummels looks an absolute beast. Way better than Badstuber from what I've seen.

Badstuber has actually improved a lot this season and was probably the second or third best defender in the Bundesliga last season.

I think Hummels is more talented and a bit ahead of him but they could form a really great partnership as CBs for our national team.

They would probably be even better if they would play for the same club but I can't see Hummels go back to Bayern, if he leaves Dortmund I think it will be for one of the Spanish giants.

If Badstuber naturally a CB or a full back? Didn't he used to play at LB for Bayern/Germany or am I completely missing something here?

I'm not trying to discredit him, I don't watch enough of him to know how good he is or to pass a fair judgement, but Hummels IMO has outshone him in these two games at the Euros.

He played for Bayern on the left for some time but that isn't really his natural position. He is left footed and pretty ideal for the left CB position where he had a really good season for Bayern last year.

So basically playing him on the left is a possibility but it's not his preferd position.

Interesting, NoLogo. Are you available? Can you play in a 2 man midfield?

From what I have seen from them both, Hummels is clearly the better player, and by a big distance. Badstuber is really good, but Hummels is in another level.

Badstuber reminds me of Evans in a way, He is clearly highly rated from a young age but never fills you full of confidence. Whenever ive seen badstuber he seems quite wobbly, but this year may of been the step up for him.

Would much prefer Hummels anyway, can see him being the ideal partner for pique at barca.

Sounds like Silvestre and for not allowing goals his best position was anywhere but central defense.

Hummels definitely wont be sold this summer and it would take a monstor offer one year from now for another team to get him

Wouldn't be surprised if he's the best defender in the world in a year or two.

From what I have seen of him - VPS did give him a bit of a run around - however he was shaky in the start of both games before he upped his performance. He looked too relaxed at the start but he doesn't play like a JT blood and thunder defender - he's more refined.

Kompany, Silva are the best two central defenders in Europe.
Lets see how Vidic returns to action and how Hummels develops.

Varane at Real has the potential to eclipse Jones and everyone else - shame Zidane turned him to play for Real.
