Apparently, Sir Alex was at Lille's game not to watch Eden Hazard but to scout their right-back Mathieu Debuchy. SAF watched a video of France v Germany recently & was impressed by Debuchy's display, so took the opportunity to see him 1st hand.

Mathieu Debuchy is a 26-year-old French right-back who plays for Lille & is seen by SAF as a replacement for injury prone Rafael.

IMO, Debuchy would be a very good signing for us. Best right-back in Ligue 1, attack-minded, good going forward and defensively.

Like i've said in the "Hazard thread" my money is on Debuchy instead of Hazard.

I think a lot of people will be disappointed if they're thinkg that Fergie was at the Lyon vs Lille match because of Hazard.

On current ability he'd would start ahead of Rafa. I'm not sure we need him even if he's a very good player
I agree.

We probably don't need him tbf. But in hindsight we never needed Evra and Vidic either when we bought them and yet it worked out fine.....

Lets hope if we do go for him it works out in similar fashion

I want Rafael to be our long term right-back and this wouldn't really help his development.

Push Jones and Smalling into being Center Backs and a Central midfielder perhaps, whilst the Twins, Evra and Debuchy fight it out for the full back positions.

What's your source for all of this ?

I agree, but surely he's at the stage where his constant injuries every four or five games are a bit of a joke?

I'd like nothing more than him to stay fit, but we haven't seen anything to suggest he will, or can unfortunately.

French journalists on Twitter I presume, that's where I saw it earlier on anyway.

My point is that it needs to be linked to in order to have credibility. If its Twitter, then it should be indicated as such.

According to that twitter this all seems to based on Fergie having supposedly watched a video of a Germany v France match. I don't know how one would have found that out in the 1st place.

That's why this Debuchy story doesn't add up. We don't need a RB as we've got about 5 players who can play the position. Secondly, the bit about Fergie watching the Germany France match seems completely and unverifyably made up some rag and then retweeted, followed by the inevitable thread in the CAF transfer forum.

Has the metro ever printed a transfer related story that's come true other than those that every other media outlet has already picked up on? I call bollocks.

Can he defend well? We could do with full backs who can defend a bit better.

Yeah he's a much better defender than Rafael. Can't see it happening though because he'd very quickly establish himself as first-choice and stay there for a few years, IMO. The only reason we'd want that to happen is if we've no hope for Rafael, I can't see him sitting on the bench up until his mid-20s.

I'm guessing a lot of these newspapers have inside information from these clubs.

Highly doubtful. Web sites are notorious for fanning the flames of gossip to get more site visitors. No harm though since 99% of everything in the transfer forum is complete BS anyway. That's why we made it, so people didn't have to deal with any of it in the United forum. Just make sure you post a link to the originating site when starting these threads so posters have a point of reference on where the info came from.

So what we are trying to do is replace a long term player, who is still young and has the potential to be a fecking great rightback in rafael with a 26 year old player that isnt really the best right now? Ok.

Or we have a young injury prone right back who can't play every week, and we're trying to get some cover for him as he'll come into his peak years challenging an experienced French international who apparently is very good.

I like my version better.

whens the last time rafael was taken off injured out of interest? he seems like hes starting to get better in that apartment.

It would make sense to get an older right back, someone much closer to their 30s, but not someone who is only 26 and still likely has 5 years or so at his best. This wouldn't make any sense at all unless Sir Alex has given up on Rafael for some reason.

Good player, but I call bullshit.

Keep in mind next season we'll have Vidic back, which means if he stays fit, Smalling or Jones would have a tough time getting games at center back. The outcome of that would be playing them at Right Back.

Why do people constantly eat up rumors like this? "Apparently this and that".

What you know is that SAF was at the game, presumably because the camera was pointed at him as some point. That's it. Rest is pure speculation.

Whatever happened to our interest in that Crystal Palace right-back whose name i can't recall? Or have we signed him already?

Sagna is the one who starts for France at RB, isn't it?
