Matheus Cunha £62.5m release clause

I reckon he is going to be transformative for us and add a whole new dimension of attacking play. He is so good and I'm honestly very surprised to see that there are fans that don't want him here. Absolutely perfect player for Amorim in that left CAM role and offers traits that Bruno lack in physicality, dribbling, driving with the ball and pace. I have a feeling those two are going to link up incredibly well together. £62m isn't that much when you consider his quality and that he has proved he can do it consistently in the league, and plays in a role we are desperate to improve.

Just seen his assist for Wolves 2nd goal yesterday. No one in the current squad makes that pass except Bruno.
The worrying part is none of our strikers could take the ball and score from there like Larsen did.

I wouldn't worry about that. There are caf fans who would be bemoaning prime Messi as being too short and slight for the premier league if we were linked with him.

Agreed that he looks a perfect fit for Amorim, has a bit of steel to his play to go with the silk, and seems keen to sign for us. Has looked great for Wolves, and is available for not a great deal more than Wolves paid for him. What's not to like? They'll point to him having a meltdown, and then conveniently ignore the Cantona, or Keane meltdowns.

I think he looks a great signing and am very excited to see it confirmed.

There are fans on here who still think Bruno holds the team back

It's a fair point, but trying to leave out bias, who would you rather back to win any kind of silverware next season?

It's not about us vs Arsenal, just that our performances recently aren't all that promising, and that goes back several years despite cup wins here and there
Honestly? I’d still back United. I promise that’s not me being difficult I just think despite us being in our worst state, we’re always somehow not far off a cup run or something and I can’t see us being as bad next season even just with Delap and Cunha joining the squad.

We’ve been without our best attacking threat (Amad) for a significant period and so I’d expect that to improve.

I don’t think Arsenal are winning the PL next season. So that leaves cups and I’d back ourselves.

me and my brother watched the game and exactly joked that "you can never imagine Hojlund scoring in similar scenarios".

Hojlund is very very limited striker who has no ability to score in most common scenarios for strikers. for instance, he can't score a header from a diagonal cross. he can't score by receiving a vertical through pass from his teammate in a counter.

Yea I think he is the right kind of player for sure to take us up at least another level. Although that is also partly aided by a lot of our attackers being awful this season. Style of play wise he seems like what we need though

I hope we can wrap this up soon. So far, the signs are positive from all sides. I hate when there is drama around a transfer.
Yeah ideally we get this done before season finishes, Ruben couldn't have rolled out the red carpet much more for him

Personally disagree, though I do think he's more of a sure bet in stamina (even if he doesn't always show it).

Do you still have trust in Januzaj though? :nervous:
Come on then master scout. What would you say Eze is better at than Cunha? Or is it just the fact he’s younger?

Not the biggest fan of his personality but it’s blatantly obvious he would improve us.

He’s much much better than any attacking player in our squad bar Bruno. You think he’d have missed that chance Gernacho had today? On top of that he’s a bit crazy and could be one of those absolutely genius players you don’t see often. Berbatov, Cantona, Rooney. That type.

Cunha is already guaranteed to leave with the clause he wanted, so it is weird how his reps keep leaking his links to Man Utd to Fab & Co. Seems unnecessary and is winding up a lot of Wolves fans as they consider it disrespectful. We know you are leaving, but leave with some class please.

A few Wolves fans I spoke to today think its a deliberate strategy to get other clubs interested - a FOMO of sorts - as his recent reputation may have scared off some of the other big clubs. As Wolves fans, we would be surprised if he went to United as he has talked about wanting to win trophies. IMO, he could walk into any of the global teams - he is that good (on his day). No offence, but there are other teams where this is more likely than United at the current time. No wonder United want to get this done ASAP.

I still have a sneaking feeling he will go to Arsenal.
Well, did Cunha specifically mention what kind of trophies? We are shit in the league, but we still won trophies.

Please please bring him in. I can not watch some of our players shooting like they've been on a 40 day safari trip with no food and water. Finishing so, so bad. He scores at least half of these chances.

Please Utd get this agreed ASAP we need something to cheer us all up after this horrible day

Really? I think there are a lot of warning signs with him:

-Already turning 26 in the summer. So probably at his peak and likely to start declining within 2-4 years
-Massively over performing this year, likely to regress. xG to goals differential is the largest in the league, indicating it's not sustainable
-Multiple hot-headed incidents leading to suspension this season alone
- Not known for work rate (according to the infamous walking stat and the recent Talk of The Devils podcast at least)

He is a good player at the moment, which is more than could be said of some of our purchases. But it would not surprise me if he's the next United bust that we're trying to offload in summer 2027/2028.

I wouldn't call them warning signs, but each to their own.

1) He is and has been improving continuously since his arrival to Wolverhampton. If anything, it is looking more likely that he is going to step up another level before declining, a bit similar to Raphinha, who is 28. Having an experienced attacker at 26 who is showing signs of steady development and becoming even better is maybe precisely what we need, as opposed to getting 20 year olds or 32 year olds, like we have been doing previously.

2) That has been the case for two seasons straight now. This xG/xA statistic is really boring. Watch his performances, he makes things happens, has lovely technique and is incredibly dangerous offensively.

3) Cantona, Keane and Rooney were also hot-headed. Add Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Gattuso and a bunch of other players to that list. It doesn't mean much, and for some reason, Cunha is being painted as some unstable, violent bloodhound who is always looking for trouble. Any way, maybe his personality is exactly what we need, as opposed to these boring players who simply don't care if we win or lose. He wants to win, and we can't have enough winners in the squad.

4) This is fair, in my opinion. That statistic is a bit of a red flag if true, but he is contributing offensively with goals and creativity, which is our main issue. It isn't lack of work rate. I just don't see any other player as good that would be as cheap. We don't attract the best players in the world, either, so signing one of the best attackers in the league for a fair bit less than what we paid for Maguire from Leicester 6 years ago is decent business for me.

My worry about him is that he is a transition player who may not adapt to playing against low blocks. His passing and link up play around the box in those situation do not seem refined

He's a good take-on/1 vs 1 player though so just by sheer dribbling, he'll be more than good enough creating space and via pass and move. The real issue is that whether every other player will be standing on their heels and just watch him do that on his own. As an individual he's got more than enough quality to affect a game as long as the rest of the team is up to standard as well.

Yes I may be wrong but his 1vs1 dribbling is often in space on transition. He isn’t a refined tight dribbler like Amad or Musiala. He is more of a bulldozer, with quick feet and pace. In a lot of ways he reminds me of Rashford

That's not the end of the world though

Cunha’s dribbling reminds me of Martial more than Rashford. Cunha is good in tight spaces.

No where near Martial for me
Dribbling type of players who are good as no 10 require good closed control dribble and need to be good in tight spaces. Unlike wingers who operate wide, the no 10 has less space and less time. Cunha is good at closed control and operating in tight spaces IMO. The same with Martial.

Martial was a really, really good dribbler. Excellent close control.

I feel you might get more useful moments of dribbling from Cunha though. After his first season Martial would go through stretches where it felt like opposition defenders could force him into being a bit of a shell of himself. Cunha is a bit more of a risk taker, a bit more bold.

I have the same concern. He reminds me Mkhitaryan at Dortmund who I was against signing at the time whilst everyone else was getting excited. Great stats, good counter attacking threat, but not the type of 10 that can control a game, pin back opposition teams and play through parked buses.

At least Cunha is doing it in the Premier League, though. He's definitely talented and will surely be an upgrade on what we already have, but I'm not as sold on him as it seems most are.
