Really? I think there are a lot of warning signs with him:
-Already turning 26 in the summer. So probably at his peak and likely to start declining within 2-4 years
-Massively over performing this year, likely to regress. xG to goals differential is the largest in the league, indicating it's not sustainable
-Multiple hot-headed incidents leading to suspension this season alone
- Not known for work rate (according to the infamous walking stat and the recent Talk of The Devils podcast at least)
He is a good player at the moment, which is more than could be said of some of our purchases. But it would not surprise me if he's the next United bust that we're trying to offload in summer 2027/2028.
I wouldn't call them warning signs, but each to their own.
1) He is and has been improving continuously since his arrival to Wolverhampton. If anything, it is looking more likely that he is going to step up another level before declining, a bit similar to Raphinha, who is 28. Having an experienced attacker at 26 who is showing signs of steady development and becoming even better is maybe precisely what we need, as opposed to getting 20 year olds or 32 year olds, like we have been doing previously.
2) That has been the case for two seasons straight now. This xG/xA statistic is really boring. Watch his performances, he makes things happens, has lovely technique and is incredibly dangerous offensively.
3) Cantona, Keane and Rooney were also hot-headed. Add Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Gattuso and a bunch of other players to that list. It doesn't mean much, and for some reason, Cunha is being painted as some unstable, violent bloodhound who is always looking for trouble. Any way, maybe his personality is exactly what we need, as opposed to these boring players who simply don't care if we win or lose. He wants to win, and we can't have enough winners in the squad.
4) This is fair, in my opinion. That statistic is a bit of a red flag if true, but he is contributing offensively with goals and creativity, which is our main issue. It isn't lack of work rate. I just don't see any other player as good that would be as cheap. We don't attract the best players in the world, either, so signing one of the best attackers in the league for a fair bit less than what we paid for Maguire from Leicester 6 years ago is decent business for me.
