Master of None

Did you all just truck through a whole season over a couple of days? Whatever happened to delayed gratification? I'm sure shows like this are meant to be savoured over a longer period of time. There's so much stuff waiting to be watched it's easy enough to mix it up a bit. Do you reckon you enjoy a show more when you gorge like that? Or is it just an unavoidable urge to watch one more episode?

For me I just can't help myself, I'm on episode 10 of season 2 and only started watching it Sunday evening. Oops.

The New York and Thanksgiving episodes were my favorites. But, like a few others have said, I didn't feel the love story at all.

The whole "we like each other but I'm engaged" thing went on for way too long. It's a shitty thing to do and made both characters unlikable, which was jarring since Dev's been very likable up to that point. There was also this weird undertone of "what we're doing is morally okay as long as it doesn't get physical". I was actively rooting against them towards the end so that last episode felt especially flat to me.

He fecked someones wife as revenge for cutting in line in season 1.

Watched the first 5 last night, First Dates was really good. Aziz' mum's acting is hilariously bad

Yeah, I chuckled when she was angry at Dev for ordering pork. Worst bit of acting I've seen.

Yeah but the tone there was very comedic and surreal. While in this case it was more grounded.

It's easy to burn through but it's pretty...average. And the acting (I don't mind in the case of the parents) is still appalling. I do like Bobby Cannavale as Chef Jeff though. It's the Aziz Ansari of sitcoms.

They're not anymore. Especially not the Netflix one. There are enough articles explaining this phenomena if you want to read up on it

I much prefer binging a show. It does add to the enjoyment for me.

Absolutely love this series, season 2 was better than season 1 as well. Brilliant show, dont think I didnt enjoy a single episode in season 2.

They really are. The show is astonishingly good. Second season was perfect.

But it's has so much depth. You could easily discuss a single episode and its tangents for a couple of hours. If you watch 10 in a row it loses a little lustre.

If they really were, Netflix would've put all the series up at once; they'd release one every week like they do with, say, Designated Survivor or Better Call Saul.
And you're definitely overstating the depth of Master of None. It's a good show, it's deeper than your usual sitcom, but it comes short when compared to the best of the genre (such as Louie or even Horace and Pete that were also made by C.K.)

Here's from the Hollywood reporter, for example:
The answer is that Master of None is a show to binge watch, not just because leaving off somewhere Dev might zig means that you'll possibly miss an important zag in the storyline — but also because devouring a full season is like devouring the best Italian meal Dev could ever find. You can't pass that up.

Not Netflix originals. There's probably a contractual reason for that anyway, not because "that's how it's meant to be watched", Netflix puts every episode up where they can.

Has anyone who makes these shows ever come out and said that they expect/want people to binge watch a whole season in a single weekend?

Not sure. They probably love it knowing folk actually do this.

Don't know how I did it but during a bank holiday weekend, I finished Making a Murderer. Mrs and kids were at in-laws.

A binge watching thread might be interesting as it a recent but popular thing.

If anything they've mostly said the opposite, but then again, even this early vanguard of the streaming revolution have mostly come from, and are used to, the "traditional" approach. So their instincts probably tend toward that.

There's still a lot to be said for the water cooler intrigue of weekly shows (which still exist on Netflix and Amazon, with the likes of Better Call Saul or American Gods) but if a whole series is streamable, that idea is redundant, and kinda pointless. Unless you make a friendship pact to maintain the same viewing pace (that neither of you will keep!) what's the point in gestating on an episode for a week if you've no one to talk to about it? How is binging a show any different to speed reading a book? Would you look down on that in the same way?

I've both binged and rationed shows, and it hasn't made a whole lot of difference to my enjoyment of them. In fact in some cases binging is a benefit, as you aren't afforded the time to nit pick or predict plot points. Something I feel greatly diminished the likes of Westworld. Which would've been far better served as an instant streaming series, without affording obsessive nerds the time and inclination to figure out, and widely disseminate, a crucial, show defining twist after only the second episode.

Up to episode 7 of season 2... I straight up love this show, I genuinely think it's one of the smartest, interesting and heartfelt comedy dramas on television.

"You know who's a great Basketball player? Michael Jordaaaaan"

Biggest laugh of the season.

I actually don't really like Ansari THAT much - I mean he's obviously smart and can be funny at times. But, I can only handle his shtick in small doses. However, I've enjoyed the show because of the other characters.

Oh and it helps Francesca is HOT

I just watched this episode last night and her acting really stood out to me as some of the worst I've ever seen. What's weird is it doesn't even seem to detract from my enjoyment of the show.

Just rinsed through S2 this afternoon. Very good.

There's some pretty horrendous acting in it though. Can't quite put my finger on what it is I like about it, but it's a good watch.

I think this might be the most binge-watchable show ever made. It's not too intense, the humour isn't one-liner after one-liner, and the characters aren't total caricatures (which you often get on half-an-hour shows that try to pack everything in to such a small space of time).

The show is clearly designed to be watched in big chunks. If you did it any other way, it'd be too much of a slow burner. Whenever I hear people say "it's not funny" or that it's "boring", I think they miss the point. You watch the show to become 'friends' with the characters. That's where the humour comes from - the familiarity that builds slowly up over 10 episodes. I don't think Aziz Ansari could have pulled off the same effect with a weekly show. He's channeling prime Woody Allen, imo.

Aziz just announced Season 3.

Looks like he’s not in it though.

That's a nice surprise... No (less?) Aziz is a bit disappointing, but as its still him and the same team creating it you'd think the quality will still be high.

Will have to rewatch before the series comes out. Have to say that I forgot about this show a bit... Which I shouldn't be doing as its brilliant.

Heh. In more ways than one.

I’m fine with Aziz not being in it tbf. He’s fun an all, but I’ve never remotely bought him as a romantic lead, least of all opposite a slew of attractive young manic pixie dream girls, being as he is a middle aged man with the voice of a cartoon cat squeezed improbably into the body of a large baby...

The writing was always good though, so up for seeing what this new one brings

It's been a while since I watched it but is there that many women he dates in it? He has the one in Series 1 who leaves and then the Italian one in Series 2. I remember an episode which he went on a few dates with Tinder but that's perfectly normal and realistic really. Like I said though I do need a rewatch I can't remember much else about it so it would help with this new series.

Apparently he said he needs more experiences in his life before continuing the character or something.

@Mockney thinks only handsome men like him should get all the women, the ugly people like you should live troll-like, under bridges, hoping for any women that he choses to discard.

To be honest, he's really done a number on you Oggy.

That does sound awfully like my current situation in fairness..
