Mason Mount's Many Misfortunes

Considering that our last number 7 was an ALLEGED rapist who slapped a kids phone out of his hand and had a tantrum to Piers Morgan when he didn't get to start all the time, I'd say Mount is a breath of fresh air.

Let's see. Half the caf was adamant Eriksen was going to play 10 and it was very obvious he'd play in the CM pair because he'd played the role before for a prolonged period of his career and that was were the need was. ETH signing Mount who has never, bar the odd game, played in the role you seem to think he will is bold. I mean Antony is excellent off the ball, it doesn't mean he can play CM. Eriksen actually plays CM and positionally doesn't need to be that advanced, Mount doesn't have his passing range so it's intriguing if he then is going to be paired with the most loose player positionally we have in Bruno as 8's.

It's extremely obvious that Mount will be taking Eriksen's place. Every report on this transfer has been clear that he is coming as our #8 signing and the profile of player completely aligns with how we started using our #8 in the second half of the season, which was pushing high alongside Bruno rather than deeper alongside Casemiro.

"Mount out wide" is this summer's "Martinez as a DM". It's not happening.

All the indications from the press and from the quotes from ETH indicate that he views Mount as a midfielder, albeit a versatile one. I have my doubts as to whether it will work but I'd be surprised if ETH doesn't start the season with him and Bruno as the 8s in front of Casemiro.

Otherwise, not sure where he would play - unlikely to bench Bruno or shift Bruno into Eriksen's deeper position and I doubt he'll be used as a LW either.

Number #7? Are you joking!!! We've ruined the legacy of that shirt. It must be earned and Mount hasn't done anywhere near enough to justify having that shirt. Jokers.

What exactly have you seen? He was Chelsea player of the year twice and a key player when they won the Champions League

Chelsea were average during those seasons just as we have been average. I was hoping to sign players who would elevate us beyond that.

Why give him the number seven and set the expectations sky high ? This club never feckimg learns. Blood sucking parasites screwing every last cent out of us till the very end

No Antony is fine off the ball and presses okayish. Mason Mount is genuienly excellent behind the ball.

Some stats, last season for all midfielders in the league Mount was -

- 94th percentile for tackles in midfield.
- 93rd percentile for tackles in the attacking 3rd.
- 86th percentile for dribbles stopped.
- 92nd percentile for success in tackling dribbles. (Meaning he is less likely to be dribbled past than 92% of midfielders. Trust me you don't want to see Eriksen or Fred's numbers here)
- 99th percentile for shots blocked (literally the best midfielder in the league)

Above average on passes blocked, interceptions, clearances and pressures.

Factually one of the best midfielders off the ball in the league, comparing him to Antony is easily disproven by stats in their relative positions. Don't get me started on Eriksen vs Mount for the same figures. The idea that you think our midfield will be less stable with him rather than Eriksen is patently absurd.

Is he? How?

Also Robson.

I can’t get over how many people have lost their heads over this

Unless I've missed it.... there isn't even an official comment on Mount from ETH?

The press release just has Murtough and Mount

And they gush over the 2 Liverpool signings, 1 that has been in the premier league for a few years and only really got any notice the season past and the other plays in the german league, hasn't got as good a numbers as Havaertz had when he was in the league and they're unbelievable signings apparently.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not cartwheeling over this season, but Mount is a good player, the jurys out whether he is good enough for what we want, but time will tell. I trust ETH to get more right than wrong and hopefully Mason is one of his right calls.

Where did you get those stats? Where does he sit for tackles in the deeper parts of the pitch?

Given Mount has played higher up the pitch, I'm a bit sceptical how those stats will translate to playing a deeper role than at Chelsea.

We're that desperate to sign him that we'd also give him the most special number the club has.

Yes, Robson had it, but we tend to give it to our wingers/attacking players. I prefer us to do that.

I love how people complain about the romance going out of football in favour of money and then say dumb shit like its just a number, it obviously isn't you sound like rival fans. Would have been so easy to just give him the 19 and try to replicate having another young sensation flying down the wing again with it on his back.

Its especially sad that by all accounts it was just used as a bargaining chip during negotiations...

Quality little meltdown this.

To be fair guys, once you give someone the Numer 7 shirt (SEVEN!) it's a slippery slope...

I mean what next? Give him say on Transfers? Make him director of football? Unlimited access to Cathy Ferguson?!

I hope he hits the ground running and becomes a fantastic player for us.

Obviously I want him to do well so the team is therefore performing. But I also would like to see those who are underwhelmed or disappointed with this signing end up with eggy yolk on their faces.

ETH wanted him and has now got him. In Erik we trust!

Those stats are vs attacking mids and wingers, there's a big swing when you switch to vs midfielders.

Apparently after every game, Mason Mount is going to set his number 7 shirt on fire, to emphasise his and the club's lack of respect for the traditions and history of Manchester United.

5 mins onwards.

Michael Owen will be turning in his grave.

Wow according to some that piece of material sewn on to make the number 7 weighs a ton. Never knew such things could weigh so heavily

I don't if your post is supposed to be positive or extremely depressing.

Anyway, welcome to United Mr Mount.
