Mason Mount

He was fine the first two games. Look back at the match threads for those games. The overall consensus was that he was among our best attackers. Clearly hasn't been the same since returning from isolation.
Nah, he was shit, and I said as much at the time, too. One decent corner the entire tournament. Easily, out of everyone who got consistent game time, was our worst player.

He’s just a nearly player. Good vision but without the passing range to match, so he picks the right player but hardly gives him a chance in key areas. All those “key passes” are a bit deceptive when it disregards how easy it is to receive the pass…

should be banned, all Chelski fans do not deserve to talk about football in the first place. They should be banned from every online platform.

Yet you like Ryan Giggs,
Man Utd has TWO players miss their penalties and somehow this is Mount’s fault.

excellent logic

Yet when Bruno has a poor tournament it's because he was tired. Mount has a few bad games and now he is trash and over rated. Got to love the red cafe and its over reacting to every single football match.

If so that is an indictment on Southgate as it leaves so few threats on the pitch. However I simply do not agree that it can be the case. I think he was just a non-entity so we have to say his main job was to disrupt the opposition as what else can be pointed to within that performance. I don't doubt this function was why he was picked over the alternatives but I'm afraid that was a terribly lacklustre performance from an attacking midfielder.
He often played behind rice and philips to cut the passing lane from right side of Italian attack. His heat map will show he often help out Shaw and shut out passing lane behind Maguire. That's what he was tasked for.

I am not saying he is not bad and he wasted some nice positions too in attack. Should have subbed lot earlier in my opinion. But Southgate didn't trust other players to do his job of tracking runners.

Through the first two games, he was far from shit but I respect your opinion. He was good in attacking sense and excellent defensively. People are emotional. We've just lost the final so I'm going to let the dust settle before getting into arguments defending Mount.

I genuinely don't know what position he was playing today. CM, AM, LF?

He's alright but after 40 minutes was clearly out of gas, which made him pretty redundant.

Not good on the ball tonight but thought he did a great job of nullifying Jorginho, which was his main task. Should have stayed on for penalties IMO.

We had 5 defenders and 2 defensive midfielders. If that was one of our 3 attackers main jobs, then that tells us everything we need to know about Southgate's tactics.

I don't want to hear any comparisons to him to Bruno nor Grealish.

He's levels below.
This comment might have worked if the former didn't pull off a 0 out of 10 in his own European final less than two months ago.

Adds little when theres so many defensive players behind him. England should really work on getting Foden or Jack into his position for the WC

Looking at his touches, he was playing LF. Against Denmark, he was playing everywhere but the middle. Sterling today was the AM not Mount.

Not much being said about him but he was the biggest disappointment this tournament, absolutely invisible for most of the games, bang average is being kind.

Excellent defensively, yes.

However, I think you should actually produce in possession and he didn't do anything outside of one corner the entire tournament. He played exactly like Lingard, Ali, RLC did in the 2018 world cup - work hard so Sterling and Kane can hopefully reap the benefits of not having to exert too much stamina by defending.

Difference is, unlike the 2018 world cup, we had quality options for our #10 spot this time and we still went the defensive route.

Terrible and poor management to not realize and make a change at 60 mins.

He is a good player but when you're shit you're shit.

Second in the English squad in terms of shot creating actions despite playing only 4 90s.

I agree that England probably had better options at the 10 if creation is your priority, but that was never an option given Southgate's tendencies. I've said from the off that England should be playing 4-3-3 with Mount as an 8 - the biggest problem with England's setup at this tournament for me was the lack of vertical passing in midfield. Maguire coming back helped this to some extent, but the bigger issue was that no one in that side could move the ball efficiently from defense to attack.

He was knackered.

Mount played almost all games for Chelsea the last two seasons. Played all the way to and was on the winning UCL team, and played games for England through the Euros to and including the final.
So you are making the point Mount is the better athlete?

When Mount does what Bruno does he can be compared. Until then, Mount needs to wash his legs.

Bruno disappears in big games and was benched in the Euros. I dont want to rag Bruno, because I think he is really good. He has not won anything yet.

I still don't understand how he got bullied by Verratti. The dude is 5ft3 and was able to head the ball.

Don't get how Stones is evading criticism for that goal - he just sat down without actually even sticking a leg out. Mount has remained goalside of Verratti but didn't anticipate that the ball would go through - yes he could have done better but Stones is the main culprit I'd argue.

Bruno won potm lot. Not CL though.

Na, he doesn't. Bruno has plenty of goals v the best sides last year.

Mount X Kane - no connection whatsoever. Great season, but a tournament to forget for the teacher's pet.

He looked absolutely spent after about 60 minutes... Feck knows why he stayed on for an extra 30/40 mins after that.

Was pony tonight. Thought we should have taken him off early in 2nd half

Should have been off along with Kane after about 60 mins. Mount and Sterling were getting pushed back too deep and Kane had no threat in behind on the counter.

Awful tournament. And yet he started over Grealish, Rashford and Sancho.

I'm not doubting some of the tactical functions, my main issue is he did absolutely nothing with the ball for most of the tournament and he's clearly the man tasked with doing so of himself Phillips and Rice. As you seem to identify yourself within your second statement, fulfilling a function like this doesn't mean you have no role on the ball or in the final third as an attacking midfielder. Every position on the pitch has numerous instructions and roles contained within.

Don't even know why the Bruno comparison is coming up. Both had a poor time and probably both knackered which does not help. That aside they're very different players, Mount seems very safe to me whereas Bruno is a risk taker. I'm guessing the managers are going to prefer Mount on their worst day because he's a grafter, they all seem to love him but there is still something to be said for output.

I was saying that at HT. Should have been brought off for Grealish. We had our foot on Italy's throat. I can see the tactical reasons Southgate wants him out there but he was incredibly ineffectual on the ball. I couldn't see the justification for keeping him on when the attacking momentum had completely swung Italy's way.
