maybe a change of scenery will do him good.

there’s been flashes of a very good player, hopefully Erik can get a tune out of him.

I genuinely don’t understand this link, I don’t see what he would bring us. I had assumed it was just pre silly season footy gossip bollocks but if Orny is on it then it just became real!
Be careful what you wish for with Ratcliffe then :wenger:

I’m unsure who’s suggesting from within the club we sign him. Don’t think we should be spending such a massive amount on someone who’s barely played/played poorly this season.

Always liked him, been a very good servant on my fantasy teams in the past.

I was thinking the other day I'd really hate it if he joined Liverpool, since he's the type of midfielder they really need.
We have Bruno already, but as a squad option I would definitely take him for the right price.

Agreed midfield balance looks quite off and ideally we should be targeting different profile of midfielder .

But I am certainly not buying the notion of United willing to make opening offer of 55 m for Mount infact one the reason we might be in for Mount is his favourable contract situation . I simply can't see United going beyond 40 m for him with only year left on his contract .

I don't feel like I have much of a sense of what Ten Hag likes and doesn't in terms of transfers, but I keep thinking back to England going into the World Cup with Bellingham and Rice as starters and then a massive hole in the 3rd midfielder spot and having little confidence in Mount to fill it effectively, and if we're spending 55M+ and big wages on a midfielder, they should be a clear starter here as a #8.

Mounts a good player would bring something to the squad, I’ve always thought there looks a player in Pulisic thou

Aside from pressing, not sure what he does that warrants such a fee. He does not connect on long passes. He is not a great dribbler in tight spaces. He is not a big scorer, but he hits a few nice shots now and then. He does have a real motor and passes the ball backwards really well. I like his attitude for sure.
Man Utd should definitely spend £70m and then pay him that massive salary he wants.

This guy is not it and one year left? 40m tops, we'd be funding Chelsea's Osihmen purchase.

Can someone not completely against this potential transfer explain what the possible logic could be in signing him?

Next season midfield: Casemiro Rabiot Mount Mainoo Eriksen Bruno.

I do not like this at all.

I believe most people know that “he is not a bad player”, but neither is Havertz for example. Doesn’t mean we should buy either of them.
The reported fee is huge and he will be on huge wages if he comes, wages Chelsea would not be willing to pay for him.
This would mean he would be a starter.
He has some similar qualities to Bruno but Bruno is more attacking and creative. We need a player to complement Bruno, not someone similar to him.

He’s doesn’t excel in areas we desperately lack. He’s not great in tight spaces and is not really a creative passer. He doesn’t help is keep the ball better.

Yeah, he reminds me of some of the current Milan midfielders where he works hard but the quality just isn't quite there. 55M is a lot of money, feels like we could identify and sign a great #8 for that. With inflation, that's probably not a huge difference to what Madrid and then Chelsea paid for Kovacic.

When I watched Chelsea under Tuchel, I was very impressed by Kante and Kovacic in tight spaces. Never felt that way about Mount, and he doesn't scare me as a #10 when we play them.

But I guess I could buy this happening if we're buying a cheap DM and then the midfield is Bruno, Eriksen, Mount and Fred as the 2 attacking CMs in front of Casemiro and that DM. That does sort of make sense as a depth chart if you're playing a Barcelona/Dutch 4-3-3 and you think Mount can hit his peak in his mid to late 20s like most central midfielders.

Ten Hag likes dropping Bruno deeper and out wide, instead of signing an 8 to replace Eriksen it opens up Mount for 10 who will add legs and work rate that would help us stop every top 8 side walking through us away from home. We might miss a bit of creativity through Mount but that would be negated by the world class 9/10 hybrid play signing Kane would bring so I’m guessing it’s a big picture signing.

I haven’t been as bemused about a link to a player since Maguire. I prayed I was being harsh then and have to hope the same now. He screams mediocre.

Chelsea wont sell him for any less than Maddison will sell for.

Utter madness to be interested in Mount for anything north of £40m.

So there was a theory bandied around, mostly by that Muppetiers account I think, that ETH has kind of switched his setup in the sense of how he wants us to play, which kind of makes sense when you see the difference between this summer and last summer and the kind of midfielders we're reportedly targetting

So before we basically wanted De Jong, this was even before Casemiro, akin to the original setup he had at Ajax, but now he's switching it more to his second Ajax setup, which is essentially one 6 and two 8's, which makes sense when you can see the type of midfielder we seemingly are after are the Mount's and Mac Allister types.

To be honest, he is exactly the type of player Pochettino would want!

Wasn’t he wanting £240k a week at Chelsea?

How does he upgrade us? He is Aston Villa/Spurs level at best.

I saw that stupid graph doing the rounds again on Twitter this morning, where old transfers were adjusted to todays game, and Roy Keane cost £95 million.

It doesn’t sound believable, but if Mount (with one year on his contract, is going for £50 million, Keane was the bargain of the century.

Reading the latest Athletic article they give a breakdown of his strengths and weaknesses, and seems to have qualities ETH would probably value.

Rather we signed kovacevic from chelsea than mount. Mount puts in a shift, but doesnt really have any outstanding attributes imho.

Hope this is his agent trying to drum up interest. An improvement on donny but not much of an improvement.

Lets be real here. We are buying him to press. Most of our midfield players can't do that to the required level that ETH wants.
@Bastian I wasn't going to respond but as you've asked, then signing him makes sense imo.

The likes of Bruno and Fred etc play with a lot of energy but they're easily bypassed by quick and agile players. Mount not only matches the aforementioned two for intensity but is also physically and athletically gifted hence he's stronger in defensive transition and tactically he's a superior player for a team that wants to sacrifice defensive stability for goals. It's why the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal want him, aswell as Tuchel rating him highly. All our forwards with the exception of Antony aren't very intelligent when it comes to defensive duties in defensive transition. And previously the likes of Pogba and Matic were also easily bypassed in midfield. So you can't control games without controlling both what you do in possession and also what you do out of possession. And what you do out of possession isn't very popular amongst some fans but it's absolutely imperative if one wants to implement a proactive attacking brand of football by playing the game in the opponent's half.

Also if we end up signing Harry Kane with him dropping deeper with Mount behind him, it makes more sense for a player with Mounts skillset to be behind him centrally, rather than Bruno imo. Mount is a proper systems player and hence a positional play coach like Tuchel was able to get his ideas across quickly to the player. Mount can also be used as a pressing trigger and is technically good, aswell as tactically clever.

And I hope we can get the deals done quickly because for me the most important positions to target to dominate games is a keeper, CM and RB. And those three positions are key to exerting control in possession and play through the press and raise the defensive line.

Or instead of signing a shittier 10 and shuffling Bruno around in the name of work rate... maybe we could just sign a quality CM that can run as well?

This is a hilariously bad signing just like Maguire was at the time, and will be laughed at in a few years just like Maguire was. Someone tell fecking Ten Hag to trust some scouts a bit more instead of getting obsessed with only players he's seen in person

Jesus fecking Christ, I have some reservations about this signing but Mount is nowhere near as crap as some of you are making out.

In some ways, if Ten Hag is looking for a more athletic version of Eriksen the signing actually somewhat makes sense. Mount is really good off the ball, and excellent at providing defensive cover. He's not as technically proficient as Eriksen but considering De Jong is off the table, we're either going to need to compromise on a midfielder, not buy one, or spend north of 80 million on someone like Caicedo. (And for the record, I highly doubt Mount will go for anything near the 80 million that Chelsea want)
He certainly is amazing defensively for the standards of an attacking player but not so much in a two man midfield (possible exception when desperately chasing a game). We've only done it a few times from the start but it's looked horrible when we have and felt like we had a 1 man midfield.

If you sign him in your 4-2-3-1 formation his best position would actually be the right of the '3', but would Ten Hag render Antony to a squad player role so soon?

Except Mount at his best was a hybrid forward in a completely different setup, with 3 CMs behind him all adept at keeping the ball. In this he'd have Casemiro and Bruno being forced into a CM role. He's a rich man's Lingard and we'd be forcing him into the side in the name of pressing while sacrificing a ton of ball security that we could get with another actual CM. Unless we are just going to buy Mount AND a quality CM (not Rabiot), I don't see how it makes sense at all.
