I am absolutely fuming. If we don’t walk away from completely overpaying for such a relatively average player, then we will never walk away from anything.

Chelsea wants £70m for a player who wants out and has only an year left. That said player only wants United too. So United is in a much stronger position here than Chelsea. United offers £40m. That means even if both parties meet in the middle, £55m should do the trick at the worst, right? United offers £55m despite being in a stronger negotiating position. Chelsea still rejects it even though they could lose the player for nothing next season and have the audacity to demand £65m. Now watch us pay £65m.

Feck that.Wouldn't mind him here but not for silly money with one year left.Leave it 'till 'January.

Telling United, let's sort this out over some tea and biscuits, the cheek of them
Will speed things up, didn’t understand why they don’t get the negotiators together and hash out a deal there and then in a meeting, haggle it out.

It feels like both sides are putting on a show but it will be done. United don’t want to be seen as walkovers and Chelsea know that losing a homegrown academy player to a domestic rival is a very poor look.

Not walking away now will affect our negotiations for a keeper and a striker and increase the budget by 30m.
Especially as the negotiations have been so public in terms of our bids and Chelsea's varying demands too.

I don’t think so. The club managing to squeeze £65m or more out of Arsenal for Havertz probably gave them confidence to hold out for the price they want for Mount. If the Havertz deal hadn’t happened I bet Mount would go for much less.

So we have Arsenal to thank for this rejection

As a Chelsea fan my jaw actually dropped when I just saw the latest bid was rejected. I’m shocked that we didn’t accept the £55m.
Don’t think you have to be a Chelsea fan for that. Just anyone with an understanding of football transfers

£55m for Mount, who wants to leave and has a year left on his contract, is an absolutely great deal for Chelsea

To ask for £10m MORE is ridiculous. But Chelsea do business much better than United, they probably know United will pay even more

Hopefully the entire Chelsea board steps on lego soon.

Mount has threatened to leave next year on a free too, so this will happen.

Does anyone think that this individual signing will make our starting lineup a lot stronger?
A definite improvement but not a lot stronger imo. I'm not a huge fan of Eriksen but I think his passing and general decision making is better than Mount's, so while Mount will bring other things to the table, he's certainly not better or equal to Eriksen in all the key departments.

Time to put this one on the back burner and revisit it in January or even next summer when we’ll get him for free. Chelsea are just being ridiculous now considering what they’ve sold Kovacic for.

Footballs just stupid, transfer windows have become a farce, takeover is getting silly too. every transfer is just big money now, it's all tiring

We need to end our interest, have a bit of fecking dignity.

Arnold and Murtough will be getting the blazers on as we speak, Arnold picking the boozer to meet Chelsea. Bums

Define a lot stronger.

We're not going to score 90 goals and win the title next season. That's very unlikely. But we'll be stronger defensively, score more goals and create more while also being more tenacious and press more effectively, forcing the opponents to tire quicker.
So yes, I think we're going to be stronger.

Unless we get him for this £55m fee now, we come out looking weaker and give the message to other clubs that we'll meet their demands eventually.

If Mount is the profile of midfielder EtH would like, he shouldn't be the only name on the list. Stand firm, lose out on someone but gain some credibility and negotiating leverage for future transfers.

If we dont end the interest the club will look like, and be, embarrassing rank amateurs.

If we really want him sign him on a pre contract in January. £70m can be much much better spent.

Agreeing to pay £10 million extra on a take it or leave it offer would be hilariously bad.

They are taking the piss and we will be a laughing stock if we come back with another offer.

you just can't publicly say "this is our final offer" and then cave in when the other team cheekily asks for a few million more. They absolutely have to draw a line here or have to accept that every team out there is going to take the piss going forward ... well, even more than teams already do.

I truly hope we walk away and make this as an example with so much publicity attached, this should strengthen our negotiation position going forward.

That’s fine, our solution is accept our latest offer of £55m or let him walk out the door for free. How about that?
Agreed, this is a good opportunity to move on and let other clubs we are negotiating with in the future know that we aren't afraid to walk if we feel like we are getting take advantage of. Time to restore United's reputation as shrewd negotiators.
