Mason Greenwood | Officially a Marseille player

I think he's just giving himself the option of bringing him back after he consults with ETH and the new management team.

Or saying we have not made a decision on him will help negotiate a higher fee for him. It’s harder to negotiate if people know you have to sell.

He's a smart cookie. He's a businessman, or course he won't dismiss Greenwood entirely, because if he does, Greenwood's transfer value will plummet even further.

If SJR is talking about the club's values, then Greenwood has no place at our club.
Greenwood will be sold in the summer, I have no doubt about that.

You are entirely consistent in being a troll yes.

nothing I have ever said can be remotely considered as trolling.

You’re calling me a troll because I originally took umbrage with how you changed your position on state ownership as soon as it benefited you. You don’t then have the right to come and criticise the club or anyone for moral failings or outrage.

To see people like you act like it was morally dubious to get rid of Mason is insane to me. You don’t care what the right thing to do is - you care about winning shiny new trophies.

People keep coming into this thread like “why are some people being mean to those who want a player who is on audio trying to rape his girlfriend after she put up photos of him battering her - we are the real victims”

it is absolutely angin. None of you care aboht what is right - so why should I pretend you do?

I don't know if that would affect his fee as much as how well Greenwood actually plays in the next 2-3 months. If he finishes strong, he could raise his current valuation by as much as 50-75% imo.

Stopped reading at this

People are overacting. He will be sold, not because of the fear of backlash. But because financially it’s straight profit for a player that hasn’t played for us for near on 3 years.

He can’t just spend because of FFP. But there is a minimum of £200m to spend if they sell the correct players this summer. MG is one of those players.

He will want to bring in players this summer to make a statement. There will be the usual 100-150m plus player sales. I’m expecting a £300m summer spend.

But as I’ve previously said. Jim being a staunch Brexit Tory he wouldn’t get rid of Greenwood because of SM cancel culture. It goes against how they think.

But using logic he will be sold for financial reasons.

The logic for keeping him is that the alternatives are not better than him. If they want to keep him it takes one statement explaining a few small points. This would likely include statements from Mrs Greenwood, and her family.
Why would his mum make statements?

No, but it definitely equals four if you have no more info in the equation.

We need more info in the equation. No chance this can be done without it. Not saying either part of this argument is correct or wrong, but it’s not going to be remotely ok without some explanation and transparency from the club.

Aye, but if we get no more info, the info we have remains the story.

Do we need another right winger?

If Sancho, Greenwood and Pellestri are probably going to be sold then yes.

If Greenwood returns we would probably start next season with Greenwood and Antony as senior right wing players. With Amad in reserve.

Exactly. Take the money and run.

Garnacho can play on the right too. Also, whatever we spend on a new RW can be amortized over the length of their contract, as far as I'm aware, whereas Greenwood would be 40 million direct injection as a homegrown player. Whereas if we sold someone we'd previously bought, as I understand it we'd have to offset what we received against what we had left on the fee as amortized. I may be wrong...happy to learn otherwise.

We’re almost certainly going to sell him in the Summer, so what did you want him to say? Give us a pack of bubble gum and he’s yours?
Exactly. There is absolutely no way back for him at the club. He also doesn’t need replaced since he’s never been in our team for over 2 years now. So anything above say 40m is great biz for generating money to be spent on the squad rebuild. Martial away, Sancho Away plus greenwood funds will hopefully generate enough to buy a back up striker and a winger. Some proper wind up on go on this thread mind. It’s a pity the bookies weren’t offering odds on whether he plays for us again or not I’d clean up . Greenwood wasn’t exactly an Angel before this remember no chance at all of him back. For his sake hopefully he can save his career in Dortmund - oops yup Spain though I hope someone else plays well for Dortmund

You mean in Spain.

Both of you are correct. Greenwood will be sold this summer, I'm sure of it. SJR is trying to raise Greenwood's value.

Correct and amortisation would apply to Sancho and Antony. What's worse is, once you sell them, the outstanding amount becomes due immediately, rather than over the years left on their contract. I want to sale these two but making money from their transfer would be unbearable.

Sorry, maybe it's me being stupid, but what about Garnacho?

I think Pellestri or Diallo will be sold with the one being kept around for another 12 months.

Getting 40 million pure profit in FFP terms for Greenwood would probably represent great value for everyone and allow us to focus our attention elsewhere.

We've been brilliant for two years now. Can't wait to take on City with Antony on the flanks.

This.

All of the goodwill his partial takeover has generated, there's no way he'd jeopardise that with such a divisive decision so soon into his ownership.

I’d love to know what team you think are going to buy Sancho and pay his 350k a week contract. Best we can hope for is another loan

His next game is against Barcelona on Saturday. I think that will have a big impact on how much we can expect for him as the big games naturally draw more attention and show how well he hangs with the leagues best.

He played well against both Madrid sides (though the Bellingham incident overshadowed his performance against Real) and if he has a good game against the league champions this weekend on top of them, we can use that to our advantage if it comes down to selling him.

It would have to be factored into his sell price. As in, we sell him for a lot less than he's worth so the buying club can save sufficient money to take care of his wages. Or else, he would need to be completely rehabilitated by way of apologizing to ETH and gradually brought back into the squad.

Have to say those SJR quotes have me worried. They're pretty neutral but I wouldn't be surprised if he's smoothing the way for a return. At this point if I had to put money on one or the other, I would probably bet on him coming back. Which would be entirely morally bankrupt on the club's part as far as I'm concerned. Really, really hope Ratcliffe is just trying to preserve Greenwood's value to some degree and that I'm just disaster thinking.
The "all young people get in trouble from time to time" bit is indeed concerning.

Surely if it’s a divisive decision then he’d jeopardise the relationship with the fan base that wants him to return? No? Last poll I saw was pretty much 50/50 on whether fans wanted him back. The anti squad shout louder though of course!

Nah it’s way less than 50/50, I’d say 90/10 at least who don’t want him back, and most of those 10 are African twitterers.

Those that want him to return wouldn't object much if he's sold, but those who want him sold would obviously object a lot if he returns, which is why SJR's choice of words would be interpreted as more amenable for a return than a sale. In fact, if he wanted to sell the player, he could just as well announce it now without much of a penalty since he won't be faulted for wanting to begin his stint at OT without the controversy.

I quick 10min chat with Emily Maitlis on Newsnight will soon get this ugly mess cleared up.
I know you’re being facetious but the United statement reads:

“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.”

If that’s true, and they’ll have much more information than all of us combined, why can’t he/they clear the air?

The poll on here was 55% on wanting him back - whether that's representative of the fanbase is another question

I'm actually surprised that he was ready to address the Greenwood situation straight in his first proper interview, certainly sounds like he keeping all options open which is the right way forward IMO

Wasn’t really impressed with SJRs comments about how all teenagers get into “trouble” if that’s what was actually said.

No way he comes back.

Is he a talented footballer? Yep.
Is he a HR nightmare? Yep.
Would lots of staff feel uncomfortable at work and possibly leave? Yep.
Would lots of fans feel uncomfortable and boycott or protest? Yep.

I think many here really don’t understand how strongly some feel on this topic. If he comes back that’s me done with United until he’s gone.

I’ve got a very young son who likes to play football with his dad. I haven’t yet bought a United shirt for him and while you may think this is melodramatic a large part of that decision has been the uncertainty of Greenwood.

I won’t feel comfortable bringing him to games with me in future if Greenwood is playing, I can’t bring myself to raise a son to support a club that condones that behaviour.
