I also love a redemption arc but part of that arc has to be "I am sorry", not "I didn't do it".

If he didn't do it, there's nothing to be "redeemed".

That's why saying "he's grown" or "he's changed" doesn't really make any sense.
What you’re asking is for him to publicly incriminate himself of something the law couldn’t find enough evidence to charge him on.

What exactly would you have him say he is sorry for?

So has the performance thread been closed for good? This one is boring and tedious.

It wasn't dropped because of a lack of evidence. Have you completely missed the evidence that was posted online?

I'm not asking him to do anything. I'm saying there's no redemption if he didn't do it.
Right I get you, I just don’t think it would be enough for some.

If he comes out & says ‘sorry I did it’ then a whole new argument will start about re-opening the case so the public get their lb of flesh.

if he comes out & says ‘sorry i did it but [insert reason that doesn’t solely blame himself], he’ll be accused of victim blaming & excuses.

If he stays quiet. This.

Check my posts in the past days I’ve acknowledged what we all saw/heard.

End of story is despite the audio/pictures being in the public domain the CPS after further investigation & undoubtedly far more information than your or I have didn’t have enough [cooperation, evidence or whatever word makes you happy] to follow up their charges.

He was let off on a technicality because the victim got back in a relationship with him and withdrew from the investigation. Let's not suggest he was cleared on some further information which we do not have available. The audio and pictures speak for themselves.

It's been so long since it happened (or didn't happen) then yes, him changing his stance from "I didn't do it" to "I do it" would of course invite more scrutiny.

My view, for what little it is worth, is that if he didn't beat her up, she would've said so within 5 minutes of the pics going online and he would have been playing in whatever your next game was.

Bunch of people got it shut down because they didn't like that MG was doing well I think, and yes, bad decision

It’s tough for the mods. I think they don’t want to go hard on anyone against Greenwood when really those derailing the other thread, irrespective of views, should have been thread banned and told to air it here.

Not if they were beefing at the time.... What is it with these "if he's really innocent s/he would do.... xyz" posts? Is it the next step down from believing he was guilty to having doubts but trying to make sense of it all?

Well yes, but it seems like nobody is annoyed enough to make a big deal out if it....

This would assume her to be calculating enough to fake those injuries and also somehow trick him into a situation where he's threatening her with violence on tape. As well as then potentially ruining his life and risking police action against her by lying. Which do you think is more likely?

Do you think it's possible that the photos were faked because they were "beefing"? I mean, come on.

He beat her bloody or he didn't. He says he didn't so he's either innocent or lying. Either way there's no "redemption" to be had.

Just correct me then, why did you get it shut down?

I have no idea I don't pretend or even attempt to guess but as everyone was theorising I made a point, and it's now an issue because?

Man says X should have happened because Y, I throw out a potential reason that assumption is a leap.

Redcafe: Avengers Assemble!!
If the theory was remotely plausible then fair enough, but it's not. And as such, you're left looking like you're trying to make unlikely excuses for a woman beater, which is not a great look.

No, you're doing the thing where you try to reframe someone as a MG stan or rape apologist.... Stop

Not sure what you’re arguing here, I’ve not said anything to the contrary.

Fact remains the case was dropped.

This is a different conversation - and not the point I was making. I was agreeing with your assertion that abuse from opposition fans would cause some United fans to rally behind him - and that sports fans tend to like few things above redemption arcs - with “us against the world” being potentially one of them. Not that Greenwood was having a redemption arc - though I guess some would see it as - but I did put it in quotation marks for a reason.

I don’t think Greenwood will play for United again. For clarification - I do think he should be able to, mostly because I’m not partial to “punishing” folks for stuff the club didn’t deem them guilty of - and that wasn’t proven in a court of law.

As an addendum - you don’t necessarily need to be guilty of something to be changed or grow from a/the experience

The CPS have to look at the public interest of the case though. With her backing out of her original statement, the chance of "proving beyond reasonable doubt", would have severely diminished. Spending a lot of money on a high profile case, for it to be thrown out would have serious lasting impact on cases in the future. I don't think people can really say that they didn't push forward with it has some bearing on his innocence. Cases get thrown out all the time for people who are guilty as well as innocent.

I have some sympathy he can't do much without either incriminating himself or his partner, but that's why it should have gone to court.

If the club want to keep Mason and Mason is happy to try and be integrated back into the team…. The club should be sending positive snippets into the press and also report a new contract is being discussed.

loads of different ways the club can spin things about how Mason now has family… doing charity work and donating part of his salary to abuse victims etc…

heck even ask a reporter to ask a simple question to ETH like has he been following his development. So many simple positive replies ETH can come out with.

The silence is deafening and the longer it gets left the worse the response from social media and the press will be.
Yup, the club's entire strategy throughout this entire debacle has been to kick the can down the road over and over instead of trying to get ahead of the narrative. Very poor communications / PR strategy all around.

Agree.

In my country there is a saying 'pain now is better than later if you can't avoid it' which means if you have to face smth that no way you'd escape then even if it's really painful you'd better do it now than later.

We should have included him in the pre season. Play dumb, deaf and blind for a while. If the sponsors say 'him or us' then yeah ok let him go. Else just play him.

Instead they waited till the final days of the window then just a little backlash and they fold. Which basically told the whole world not only the club do not give a feck about moral but also we have no balls at all. Which made us looked so weak, pathetic and stupid imo.

Him as well to be fair. He's not done anything to help himself in all this. He's done the equivalent of going to the Winchester and waiting for this to all blow over.

I couldn't give a shiny shit about likes. Never have done, never will. My beef was the carefully curated performances thread, intended to remove any hint of negativity aimed at the horrible scrote, which became a creepy circle jerk about any half decent performance vs shite La Liga teams. Which was a protection that has never been afforded to any other player on here.

This is a load of nonsense, if you didn't like that thread, you should have stayed out of it. There were many who wanted to discuss his performances without any of the other discussion that belongs in this thread and for the most part those discussions were perfectly respectful (TBF it's mostly pretty respectful here too which is good to see). There were plenty of negative posts about his performances too - a great shame that thread was closed.

Anyway next Getafe match is tonight, probably their biggest match since he joined.

That guy mixing in the same post being a racist, raping, cheating... and being gay. It's curious how the main support for Greenwood always comes from people still living in the medieval age.

By the way, for those suggesting Greenwood eventually going to Madrid or Barcelona.

Madrid and Barcelona can cherry pick the best players around the world. They don't need to buy a flawed selfish prat from Aliexpress because he's cheap, when they can get a Rolls Royce with more guarantees. The guy is a ticking bomb that could eventually explode one day again when you less expect it. Today he's fine but tomorrow you wake up and he's involved in some weird shit. There's nothing in his head. Madrid and Barca don't need to play that game.

For those who still don't get it, you have to look at Greenwood like an even more graceless Balotelli. There's some talent there but he's dumb, lazy and doesn't have any interest in the game. It's a shame but nature didn't give him more, so what can we do. The sooner his fans accept he's leaving next summer the less traumatic it will be for them.

You can look at the positive side, there's always plenty of space in Getafe's stadium. You'll be able to choose the perfect place to watch your starboy when he signs for them permanently.

Quite funny really when you think about how trial by social media is the modern equivalent of an angry mob and pitchforks.

Exactly, completely agree. You also can't take the stand that it was over moderated comparative to others, if anything that means the other threads need harder moderating as the performance threads as I understand them SHOULD always be about performances only, this thread unfortunately is just a cycle of those who want him back vs those who want him in prison, it's done time and time again.

It definitely is, and since tweets and IG posts are usually presented for discussion on forums, that mindset tends to make its way into threads here as well.

That's not to vilify or absolve anything related to Greenwood, just an observation on how people usually cluster into binary camps that result in circular arguments.

The CPS literally referred to further information (which we do not have available):
"In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case."

Note that she withdrew a full 10months before the CPS closed the case so that was not the reason they dropped it.

I am 100% sure that if he plays for Man United again, the negative opposition fan reaction to him will cause a lot of Man United fans to back him.

It happened with Zouma, Suarez and Terry (I'm not saying what they did was the same, just they were all pretty much hated by oppos). The tribalism will just kick in for a lot of fans, even more so of he is on the pitch in Man United colours.

I would imagine that support of him would actually depend on how good he is. A lot of us participated in the vilification of Maguire when he was going through an extended poor period, so there are limits to this sort of tribalism. Admittedly, I think the unprecedented mockery that came from rivals and opponents did help us rally around him a lot more, but say Greenwood plays for us again and simply sucks, a lot of people would conclude that whatever their principles or views are, he's not worth their support because of his performances.

Oh that's new to me. I generally avoid this kind of conversation since it's a fecking toxic nutshell tbh.

Still think he did it but tbf we can't be 100% sure. If we have a clip yes 100 % but just the audio then no. People been doing weird shit in sex for ages.

For feck sake stop with the "weird sex" angle, this isn't that.

He doesn't get charged to begin with if that's what it was.

Should remove the slow mode then because one post per 15 mins during games doesn't make sense.

People will take the MG match talk to the La Liga thread when they're timed out of this thread.
Imagine that.

"Nice goal by Getafe! Not allowed to say who scored though..."

Agreed, I can’t get my head around how poorly the club have managed this situation.

Should have decided very early on… get rid or suck it up and deal with media\reputational risk consequences. Instead the media dictated which caused reputational risk anyway and a decreased value in asset.
