Mason Greenwood - Getafe loan

A lot don’t. And the press won’t ignore a story. And the supporters groups who spoke out won’t just accept it. I just can’t see Utd deliberately bringing even more bad press down on themselves given the clusterfcuk that the last month has been.

We all wanted better transfers. That never happpened and we have to deal with it.

I really don’t think these guys care. It was the best thing to do at the time and if it works out he can come back the player he left us. They will figure a way.

I doubt he will be back but I still wouldn’t be surprised if he does return. They could have easily let him go for free.

I did think this but I’m not sure now.

When you re-read the club statements it is quite vague in relation to the future plans for him.

If he goes on loan now it’s either to;

1) get him in the shop window
2) see how he performs/still got it
3) judge the reaction/see if it settles down

You then have a decision to either sell him or reintegrate him.

Basically gives the club another year, and the new owners, a chance to weigh it up.

Reading the United statement again;

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

If he goes on loan then there’s plenty of wriggle room here isn’t there? He’s recommenced his career elsewhere but could he actually return in the future?

The statement was worded carefully definitely. If he comes back as the same player as before they'll look at what to do. I hope we sell him, but the way back to us would be Getafe, contract agreement, loan to a Premiership club to see how it goes I reckon.

I think it would be career suicide by Murtough to try to reopen this issue in 9 or 10 months.

It’s a shite situation either way isn’t it?

The best case scenario would probably be that he goes the way of Morrison slowly fading into obscurity.

Imagine selling him and he goes on to smash it somewhere else. The eternal fantisising about Morrison and Pogba will likely be nothing in comparison.

Would prefer a permanent deal to anywhere. But if this is the first step to get this cnut out of the club then so be it.

Which begs the question why carefully word it in the first place?

It will be interesting to see what happens. The loan might not go through but if it does.

Hope he bangs in the goals and gets his career back on track

A way better league than I thought he would end up in. I reckon he scores 7 goals this season

We can make some money selling him next season. Not sure what’s the fuss about him going on loan.

They've set themselves up for a lot of performative foot stamping and media aggro given the womens WC fallout.

But he deserves a club and to get back on a pitch somewhere, and ideally not one that would leave the family isolated. So good luck to them.

Hopefully he does well and we can get a good fee for him next summer

Wow, with everything going on with the women's national team, Spain is the last place I expected him to go.

Probably the best option all round.Door left open as well as the potential to get a significant fee.

As a case study, are there any previous examples of a player who is proven at the top level suddenly playing at a dramatically lower level with their career still ahead of them? It'd be fascinating to see the extent to which a player may be made to look significantly better or much worse depending on such a stark chasm of quality in the teams around him. The obvious disclaimer is that an 18-month absence may have also impacted his game permanently.

Why?

Only 3 players scored more than 15 last season. Bit of a stretch for a player who hasn’t played in 2 years to beat that

I'm not sure I'd hang my hat on that stat alone. It's not like there's some natural law guiding La Liga. It can also indicate a lack of proficient strikers, which I think the Spanish National Team has had issues with for ages.

What counts against him besides absolute lack of match fitness is going to a team that managed to score a whopping 34 goals in 38 matches last season, managed by a manager who saw his then Valencia team score 42 goals in 38 matches last season. If he scores 15 goals for them it would be like scoring +30 for a top side.

I think everyone barring serial killers & child abusers deserve a chance at redemption. He had a family now and hopefully the experience of becoming a father will shift his perspective and force him to work on his problems.
We’ll likely never know the full story but he’s not even been convicted, let alone Ted Bundy.

Yeah I get that. Lewandowski scored 23 last season, which seems low-ish for a league with apparent terrible defending. I can’t see how Greenwood gets 15 at a club like Getafe and how they set up. I thought 7 was generous

Doubt it. That recommencing will start all over again next summer. Do you think people will just forget who Greenwood is?

No, but a lot can happen in a year. Maybe they’ll keep a low profile or maybe once he has a new career path lined up they’ll be in Spain taking every opportunity to show they’re a loving family.
We can’t predict the future.

What’s likely is that United are hoping he’ll smash it in Spain and have some really good PR with the family. If he does that and it all remains chilled enough in Spain, I wouldn’t be amazed to see a 40+m quid offer come in next Summer.

Just hope for his missus there was much more to it as the club said, and that she’s not now being forced a long way away from her family and support and being left abroad with someone who abuses her.

feck going through all that again. A lot of people seem to think there’s a small chance of him coming back (I don’t and wouldn’t want him back) and I think some of this is because the three official statements (United, Arnold & MG) were all ambiguous in that they never actually say ‘left’ or ‘departed’ like pretty much all club statements say when players leave United. Could just be looking into it too deep!

New owners will probably see Murtough out the door anyway, so might not be his problem. That's assuming the sale ever bloody happens.

I hope he turns around his life, pots 20-15 goals and we sell him next season for 60m

One thing I do know is that a lot of the people on here that have been spewing hatred and abuse towards him over the last 18 months will all be tuning in to watch him play in La Liga…

There's no reason he shouldn't be allowed to resume his career if he can find a club that'll have him. Seems like a hell of a time for a move to Spain though, given recent events. Best of luck to Getafe's media team.

I’m coming around to this belief, too. If we were getting rid then we’d have just terminated his contract. Right or wrong, this is the club kicking the can down the road.

Yeah was thinking the same myself.

Just waiting for the statements from the women's teams now. A player banned from one team walking straight into another? Make that make sense. Is he going to be viewed as a safeguarding risk?

Why not?

Though what I meant was that he deserves a chance at another club to continue his football career. Doesnt necessarily deserve to be playing top level football, will have to prove himself all over again.

We couldn't even find a buyer so resorted to loan. The people in charge of transfer business should be fired after this window,

Hope he does well.

United played a pivotal role in his formative years - so gotta shoulder some responsibility for whatever character flaws. Also, he’s just started a family - so I hope he becomes a better person and can move on with life.
