Our fans need to be really patient here. This is the cost of us playing him on the right wing for the past year, he needs to acclimatize to playing as a no.9 at the top level. Right now, Greenwood is very tidy and is a very good individual player. He has good control of the ball, is deceptively quick, has good touches, makes good, tidy decisions. Unfortunately, Greenwood doesn't have flair, he can create on the off chance, but he's not a creative player. He's a striker and it shows every time he plays. He's good at spread play to get others involved, he has a fantastic shooting technique and great shot power. He has good balance and agility on the ball, and is very good in short spurts of acceleration. In essence, he has all the qualities of a good striker, outside of his aerial ability, and he demonstrates this in every game he plays. Unfortunately, playing on the right flank and not having the flair or dribbling ability to consistently take players on individually means that he finds it difficult to create chances for himself in the way Rashford is able to do on the other flank. As a striker, his lack of first team experience in the no.9 role is glaring. He has the skillset, but doesn't yet know how to function in the first team setting which is why his positions and combinations up top are a little rough...and when mixed with playing for a team like ours in which goalscoring opportunities are barely manufactured and can come quick and fast due to lack of possession in the final third, it is paramount that the no.9 consistently makes excellent decisions, something which a 19 year old player would find difficult to do without much experience in the role with the team. We have an opportunity to give him a run to get more familiar with the expectations of the role in the first team. Rather than being a sink or swim situation, this is an opportunity for us to actually develop our future no.9 through experience.
If greenwood were weak on the ball, couldn't shoot or had poor touches, It would be fine to be harsh. However, I don't believe many forwards have the level of striking skills depth that Greenwood currently has. I really believe this is just a situation of us helping him put all these attributes together to form a consistent goalscoring machine.
