Apart from Mata, who else ?

Mata, Soldado, Atletico's Juanfran for example, plus loads of pro players like Casilla and Morata.

In terms of the latest crop, Morata got 34 appearances last year but decided to move to Juve, Jese had 30 before getting injured and is just starting to play again.

Is it a good place to go at 16? Probably not. Is it a bad one? No. Whatever happens he'll learn a lot.

Well too bad we didn't get him he seemed like an extraordinary talent. Even if he doesn't make it at Real, the boy is 16 and if he decieds after 3 years he doesn't get enough chances with them he still is only 19 and has a whole career ahead of him and training every day with players like CR, Kroos, James, Bale and Modric surely isn't the worst that could happen to the development of a 16 year old.

MADRID/OSLO (VG) Spanish sources tell VG Martin Ødegaard is signing with Real Madrid. The deal could give Strømsgodset over 60 million NOK.

The Norwegian football-club Strømsgodset will most likely receive at least 30 million NOK immediately in transfer-fees, but based on achievements they can get as much as 60 million NOK (about 6,8 million EUR) for the 16 year old wonderkid.

According to information obtained by VG, the negotiations with Real Madrid in Copenhagen Monday afternoon, did not take a long time.

As VG has reported earlier Ødegaard will not be loaned back to Strømsgodset, but will move to Madrid as soon as possible along with his fater Hans Erik Ødegaard - who will aslo be hired by Real Madrid.

At this point it is not decided what Hans Erik Ødegaards job in the Spanish club will be, but as VG previously reported, he could be assigned a role as a coach for young players.

Ødegaard will be a part of Real Madrids first team from day one and a shirt with the number 16 on the back is has already been printed. This shirt number will according to Spanish regulations ensure Ødegaard plays for the first team.

VG has been in contact with Ødegaards agent Tore Pedersen, who at this point refuse to comment the negotiations.

Martin Ødegaard turned 16-years old in December and is the youngest player to ever represent Norway.

Interest in Ødegaard from English Premier League sides Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal has previously been reported.

I remember when Perica Ognjenovic signed for Real,he was next best thing coming from Balkan,he failed and ruined his career for good. Not saying same thing will happen for this kid just i rather see young players go step by step.
Perica Ognjenović to Real Madrid, Dragan Ćirić to Barcelona, Ivan Tomić to Roma.
Every single one of them great talent from Serbia, every single one of them failed. Perica Ognjenović is the epitome of youngster failing at big club.

Anyways, I can't see any sane reason for Ødegaard joining Real, was there any real world class player after Raul from their academy to break through and become a club legend? And even Raul and few others from that time came in the time when Barcelona dominated and Real was in a crisis...

I don't get this argument at all about these Real Madrid academy graduates who have gone on to do well otherwise. Surely the whole point of Odegaard going to Real Madrid is so that he will play for them one day (and not just a token game here and there)? His chances of doing that are pretty slim by joining them at a young age. He would have been far better off joining Ajax where he could have been a regular in the first team within 12 months and moved on after a few seasons. They have a reputation for producing fantastic players and his footballing education there would have been second to none. Going to Real Madrid at 16 is mindbogglingly stupid. Him and his father have clearly had their head turned by the money and prestige on offer. They even offered the dad a coaching job at the club!

As for academy graduates like Mata, Soldado (in Spain) and Lopez having successful careers elsewhere I actually think that's an indictment of their academy. Maybe the success these players have enjoyed is more down to their own talent rather than what they learned in Real Madrid's academy. It just shows that it is so hard to make it there that these players had to leave without even getting a look in. Even Varane (who was brought in for a few million) has been limited in his playing time despite the fact he is the best young defender in the world and would walk into any other team. What chance does a 16 year old have? A squad number and job offer seems to have swayed them. How gullible can you get?!

Just read he'll receive yearly wages of 2,25 million euro, not bad for a 16-year old. Hopefully this will not destroy his career, like so many before him. Hitting puberty, leaving home, inmense pressure of being the most talented player of your age, too much money to spend. Wouldn't be the first that wouldn't be able to handle it.

We were talking about the poster, not the player. ;)

Ah, makes sense then.

I'm not very in the know on Real Madrid and how they develop young players, but I feel like Ödegaard would have a bigger chance with us. We've had a pretty good record with getting players in really young, developing them (incl. loans) and then turn them into regurlars around age 19/20.

He'd have a better chance with you than with Real, sure. Real are the worst when it comes to what he could have picked. The reason I said he shouldnt move to either clubs are different. Real wont give him a chance simply because they dont have the patience. In your case, you just have too much quality in attack for him to get a look in anytime soon. He'd probably spend 5yrs at other clubs on loans which I doubt is his plan.

After looking like he's carfeully considered all options with his father he goes to choose Madrid  Not saying it's a bad choice as it could very well turn out good but I thought he would have chosen a club like Ajax to get playing time at the top level.

Mata, Soldado, Atletico's Juanfran for example, plus loads of pro players like Casilla and Morata.

Those names don't excactly rock my boat !

Let's first look what Christian Streich can make out of Mats Moller Daehlie

Really wish that this guy would just sign with someone already. Seems every week he is about to sign with some club.

I wish him all the best in Madrid. He really is special, so I think he will make it big. In a few years his one of the best.

Just what I was thinking. Rewind back 10 years or so, and the hype for Adu was similar.

There are some differences... The hype with Adu started before he ever played senior football, and when he did it was for the illustrous DC United. Ødegaard's been on tour and has reportedly not looked out of place at the Liverpool training, as well as at Real Madrid. Not to mention that he's played for the NT and looked quite good as well.

Whatever happens, the lad'll make way more of himself than Adu ever did. He already has, tbh.

What are the odds that he'll vanish into the footballing abyss within 2 years? Madrid was a horrible choice for a 16 year old. Unless he makes an instant impact, and I'm talking Messi-esque for Barcelona, he won't play much at all.

It's a bad deal if he doesn't get the proper loans. Given his current age and experience he'd best suited to be loaned to either the Belgian or Dutch League where a good portion of the players are 16-22. Then after a year there they could evalaute his progress and see if he's ready to move up to French/German/Italian leagues or even perhaps relegation fodder sides in La Liga or the PL.

Call me cynical but id not be surprised if thats the last we really hear of him. He could hardly have picked a worse club for his development.

At least his dad got a job out of it though.

He might have gone to a club that is notorious for being almost impossible to break through as a youngster but at least they have a manager in place who thrives on giving youth it's chance.

At AC Milan he gave loads of chances to those coming up through the u31s and even gave some chances to some of the U29s and u27s.
