I don't get it really, he never had a bad season like this one. Before that, he performed for Ole whenever he was fit.

He'll start next season being the only forward with Greenwood who had a normal break over the summer. I think people are gonna be surprised at how much he's gonna play.
 
Maybe we should loan martial out, ideally do a loan swap where we get a player in return on loan in position that can fill a void for the season like a midfielder or right back.

Definitely think martial should be loaned out though if we don't find any respectable buyers for him, we have to stop this complacency at the club of holding onto players for too long to the point of them having little resale value.

I think a bit of a dip is an understatement.

That coupled with his time here generally being very up and down puts him in a delicate position. If a good offer comes in the management must be tempted.
 
Cash in to who though. Spurs really do keep coming up in my head as one of the few possibilities, but we'd probably have to pay some of his wages. Italian clubs perhaps, he'd do well in Italy I think.

Because he's well down the pecking order now, how is he going to get in the team? Rashford, Sancho, Cavani, Greenwood will all be ahead of him and then we've got Amad who needs minutes to develop. Martial earns too much to be a squad player and he wouldn't be happy in that role anyway, he'll sulk and moan like he always does. It is simply time to move on for both player and club.

He is a similar level to every player you mentioned at his best, if he plays at his best then he will get a lot of minutes and ultimately Ole would obviously rather Martial was the starting striker than Cavani due to age. The question I asked was why you don't believe he will have a good season, not what the repercussions would be if he didn't.

You're not wrong. I think this is perhaps where Ole has made the most difference, in getting in the right profiles more or less. Hopefully that continues.
 
Any offer over £35 million and I would deal.

Any offer less than £30 million I would keep him as a squad option.

Agreed, this is why I was ok with United over-paying to get Maguire...we definitely needed to overhaul the mentality of the players within the club, just as much as we needed talent.

''Similar level at his best'' doesn't matter when the other players are more consistent than him and work harder for the team and have a much better attitude than him on the pitch. To win major titles consistency is needed and you will never get that from Martial. He has been at the club 6 years, he is not going to miraculously turn into something different from what he is overnight after all that time. After 6 years we know what we are going to get from him. Next year we will go big on another striker when Cavani leaves, guaranteed. So what is the point in Martial hanging around here when he has no future in the first 11 and we have so many talented youth pushing for minutes like Amad and Shoretire? I clearly explained why he won't have a good season, because he won't get the minutes in the first 11 and he'll sulk about being on the bench like he always does. He is not an impact sub type of player, he is the type who will come onto the pitch with a chip on his shoulder about not starting the game.

The season before last was better than Rahford or Greenwood were last year, for the entire season. If he performs better than them or even Sancho or Cavani then he should rightfully expect to start above them. If your argument is that you think Ole is that stubborn then I guess I understand as he does not rotate very much. I still think your assumption that a really talented player will definitely have a shit season is is a bit presumptuous.
 
His defenders always say that he doesn’t score more because Greenwood and rash Ford are selfish. Let’s see if he can score 20 league goals with Bruno and an unselfish sancho.

No one sane is gonna pay for him more than 30million. Lazy player on extremely high wages with an injury record last two seasons. 25 million I would take in the heartbeat and fund a proper CB/CDM or a decent back up striker.
 
at this point he is merely back up, on left wing and striker. If we cash in on him and use that cash to fund a move for a genuine legit starter ie centre half and/or defensive mid, go for it.His value right now is probably at its lowest since he's been here though, so we'd be lucky to get decent money for him. Problem is who would want him, any teams that play any kind of press will steer clear of him. He isn't a traditional winger or classic centre forward, he's like a hybrid. Maybe an Everton or Spurs with new managers might want him, maybe we could squeeze them for 25-30 mill.
 
No concrete links yet, right? We're not linked with any strikers and I think he staying. Unless his agent has found a club that would meet our valuation. Which is probably at around 50. And I don't think there are clubs that will meet us there.
 
If he wants to leave, then I wouldn't exactly be upset. However it does feel like the Sancho signing has given us 5 good options for those front 3 spots. If we sell Martial it feels like we are in the same position as we were last season... one injury away from flogging our front 3 for 90 minutes twice a week.

Possibly Ole is looking to reincorporate Lingard into the squad after him rediscovering some form at West Ham?

We've come a long way since the start of the 20/21 season were it felt like we only had 2 premier league quality players for our font 4 positions.

He scored a flurry of goals right after project restart when teams were in a bit of disarray which made his goal tally for the season look respectable, 3 of them in one game against Sheff Utd, but to say he was better than Rashford and Greenwood for that entire season is something I cannot agree with. He was hit and miss for most of that season like he always is. And may I remind you that he cost us the europa league semi final against sevilla that season missing some absolute sitters in front of the goal, and then did the same thing the following season against PSG and in lots of other games until Ole finally lost patience with him.

Big NO to that. Strike while the iron is hot & sell. His market value isn't going to get any higher & any extension/delay is just lost time for him & us. Martial is more valuable to us than Lingard & provides more end product, at least in how we currently play. Only way Jesse stays if if DVB & Pogba go. Figure Mata is ahead in the pecking order even then (assuming he stays another year). TBH, if West Ham offered 10-15 mil, I'd bite their hand off.

I am not saying he was like a prime Ronaldo, just that he was better that season than either Rashford or Greenwood the one just gone. If we had Ronaldo and Messi playing for us then it would not be a discussion, these are the players we are comparing him to though. Not a dig at Rashford or Greenwood, Martial is just at a similar level and thus it is not ridiculous that he could end up a starter next year.
 
Martial is on huge money - and his contract doesn't expire until 2024.

By "huge money" I mean that he's a top, top earner - behind DDG and Pogba only (I think).

If we could find a buyer for him, it would free up a lot of moolah. That kind of money over three seasons - it's a lot.

But the problem is...obvious. Who wants him? And do they want to pay anything near what we'd want?

What a great post. Clearly we should only sign Brexit ballers since players like Cantona and Ronaldo were proven to be just non-challant scrubs that did nothing for the club's history and stature.

I do sometimes wonder if some of you people work for the HR department of a big corporation with some of the culture BS that is getting spewed on this forum to justify the mediocrity of some of our staff, players and coaches.

I do sometimes wonder if certain people only come on here to make up stuff so they can get offended over it. @Ali Dia is absolutely spot on.

Bit of a dip is a ludicrous statement.

Martial last season had one of the worst individual seasons I can ever remember from a Utd starter. He was shockingly awful.
 
Good player on his day but too inconsistent to start for a club like Manchester United. He turns up every couple of game and could infuriate you then for the next five games.

Compare him to someone like Aguero your typical speedy, skillful striker who put his body on the line if there is a sniff of a goal and always gets in good positions like Cavani does.

Martial doesn't do this, he usually hangs back. I don't know what it is with him, he looks disinterested and lazy half the time.

If we got 50 million for him I'd take it and put it towards Haaland or a new center midfielder.

This is one thing to be added. His goal per shot ratio used to be insane but it went to hell last season. Sign of a player completely out of focus.
