Marquee signings.

No, as good as he is the main reason people want him is just because he is a central midfielder. At this point I think some people would be happy to have anyone, regardless of the implications to the team, the squad, and the club as a whole, or regardless of what type of midfielder they are... they just want a body in the team. And of course, if that player has a fancy name and comes from a foreign country, he'll definitely be better than any other options that are available
Incorrect. The main reason people want him is because he is one of the best young central midfielders in the world, possibly only Gundogan has a case of being better than him from his group age.

About him having a fancy name and being from a different country, name me 3 better central midfielders (not attacking midfielders, not wingers) than him that play in EPL. Thiago would have been definitely a marque signing, although the fact that he would have cost only 18m would have gone against it being entirely a 'marque signing'.

I'm not disputing his talents, or saying he isnt one of the best young midfielders in the world. What I am saying is people are so desperate now for us to sign a central midfielder, they are willing to sacrifice the integrity of everything about the club in order to appease one player, who might not even be a good fit for us anyway. And for a lot of people, the fact he has a fancy name, comes from Barcelona and has a lot of hype makes him seem a more attractive prospect... because I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people havent really seen that much of him to really give a detailed assessment on how he would fit into our team tactically (obviously some people will have seen a lot of him, but not every single United fan who seems desperate to sign him).

There isnt really much point answering the second point, because its always going to be very subjective and I am one of the people who hasnt seen enough of Thiago to make a qualified judgment anyway.

Eh?

Rooney and Van Persie are the two most glaring examples.

I was actually meant to say "from abroad" in my post as well.

Even still i would say that Van Persie is the only recent one from England as well. Yes players like Rooney, Rio and Berbatov could be considered, but i don't think they were at those heights when we signed them.

There's a difference between getting a marquee signing from abroad to getting one from inside the PL, I always consider any signing made within the PL to be a domestic signing so to speak of which being Manchester United we're always going to hold the upper hand over our rivals however for me a true marquee signing/one which will make the whole of Europe stand up and take notice is what the likes of Barca/Real and most recently Bayern do, in fact it's funny that Bayern have started making these kinds of signings because previously much like ourselves they tended to focus on players already within their own league

Denis Irwin last year said Utd would sign RVP, way before anyone else. 2 months ago, he said we WILL sign Fabregas & go for either Bale/Ronaldo. He also expected Moyes would possibly go for Baines too.

You call them marquee signings if you wish!. . I'm. with Denis on this!

United Need Action, Not Transfer PR

The knives are out already! Since when have we failed to compete with Dortmund for transfers? Did I miss something or did we not sign their one of their best players last summer? But it does raises some interesting points. These two paragraphs in particular

The fact that no-one wants to go there at the peak of their career leads others to be put off in doing so. If it's not good enough for one, then it's not good enough for another.
So in order to correct this, United have to start becoming a home for some of the top ten world footballers season after season. By Ferguson's own admittance, a club of United's domestic dominance has failed in Europe more than it should have. They're getting trapped into a circle of negativity where they can't win in Europe because they don't have the best players and they can't get the best players because they look off the pace in European football. However, even as Champions League winners in 2008, it still didn't pull world football's biggest stars into their orbit.
Trying to operate on the basis of nurturing young players is all very well but United is not a little local domestic football club, they're in the top echelons of world football. Football has changed a lot in the last three or four years. The Premier League at the highest levels is not about growing your own players and hoping they flourish, that's for the groundlings and also-rans, you buy big and buy often to win in Europe and because by buying big you look big. Different rules apply to United and precisely because the likes of Neymar, Cavani, Lewendowski and many more don't end up there, the club ends up looking like the poor relations and ever less desirable to the crème-de-la-crème.

Why would Barca sell Cesc now that Thiagone? Cesc doesn't want to leave either. Ronaldo, Cesc and Bale are all pie in the sky for us.

Well the club can reportedly spend £75m on a player if they want to so Bale and Ronaldo aren't unrealistic, if you take the club seriously, that is :)

That's a load of bollocks. If United have been doing things the wrong way whilst Chelsea and City have been getting things spot on, then how do you explain the fact that United have enjoyed loads more success than Chelsea and City both domestically and in Europe?

Beat me to the punch here.

Barca have thrown Thiago under a bus for Fabregas, why would they sell him as well.

It's still early but some of the statements made by our CEO, Moyes can be looked in that way.

They can, but let's wait a few weeks before we look at them this way. The problem with football media is that with the internet, the websites and blogs, any idiot can write anything.

The managers?

The problem we've got is that other clubs can trump us by offering higher wages (see Lucas). While other clubs have the aura attached, Barca/Madrid and now it seems Bayern. We should be one of the aura clubs and too many we still are, but Barca/Madrid imo are a special case, while Bayern are the fashionable team atm. Get Bale in and we become a fashionable club again imo, similar to when we got Ronnie, many players said they wanted to join United to be able to play alongside him.

Bale isn't going to make united fashionable. Maybe the other way round,

Ronnie wasn't a well known player when we bought him, we bought him young and developed him.

It's just that we are not the best currently, at anything. We don't have the best players, best manager, best location and neither do we pay the most, we are just a bit meh, looking from the point of view of the top footballers in the planet.

Yeah it's not like we're the champions of England or anything. We're utterly useless.

I obviously meant the best in the world. Read the thread title, we are talking about marquee signings, and we mostly compete for their signatures with teams who are the champions of their leagues too, so being Premier League champions puts us on an equal footing in that regard. Then come the rest of the points that I mentioned.

You don't need a marquee signing. You do need a very decent CM. The two are not synonymous.

I'd account that to having the best manager who has ever lived.

We're no longer in SAF territory.

I'd also account that to having a great squad of players, but I forgot that you don't need good players to win the Premier League, just an amazing manager. I guess our team is now on par with Liverpool now that SAF is gone.

Agree, Fellaini or the much despised Gareth Barry, while not exactly marquee signings, could both do a job for us and do it well.

But so do City, SAF has clearly been the main factor for our success in the last few years and with him no longer here it's a bit old to be using "but we're still winning stuff" as an excuse.

Barca have signed Neymar, presumably he will have to be accomodated along side Messi. They are presently being linked to PSG & Marsellies MF's.

Definitely true, but the way some people are going on you'd swear he's managed Stoke to the title last season. As for City, they have a great starting 11, our squad is still stronger.

Rather Moyes is up to the challenge is another thing, but SAF has undoubably left him a very good squad of players and I expect us to build on that this summer with two or three nessessary signings.

SSN latest; Sources say a £35m bid from Utd for Fabregas is imminent!;)

It will go something like this

31st August 2013

Bollingbroke calls up Rosell at Barca

Bollingbroke: 'Sandro we have a bid for Cesc, we have been preparing it for over a month and everything, 35m........ta daaa'

Rosell: 'Bolling what? Where is David Gill? 35m? we find that offer derogatory, we value him a 35.5m!'

Bollingbroke: 'but but it will take us another month to prepare another one'

Rosell: 'oh here is Cesc, lets put him on a conference call'

Cesc: 'I don't want to join United anyway'

Bollingbroke: 'Doh!'

All of them to be midfielders
