Marko Arnautovic

To West Ham he is worth 40+ million, bit like Sigurdsson the other season for Swansea, worth much more to the club then he’s actually worth due to the fact they are unlikely to be able to sign someone who is better than him, Swansea with Sigurdsson didn’t replace him with anyone as good and probably the difference between them staying up and going down.

Arnautovic will get his head easily turned. When he is not commited he is not even worth 5 million let alone 50 million. West Ham need to be careful with their valuation.

He is a good footballer, sometimes.

Ergo, not good enough for what we should be aiming for.

I’d say that accurately describes every member of our current squad.

Ergo, pointless.

I don't think some of yous lot would recognise a good footballer if you fell over one, deary me
He is a good player yeah, but not a great one. Not one you'd expect the likes of Madrid, Barca, Bayern, or dare i even say, city or pool would go after. We should be aiming for great, exceptional players or those with that sort of potential, and not settling for good players that can "play a role" in the team.

Simply burying your head in the sand if you're not the least bit underwhelmed at potentially signing him.

Bayern signed Sandro Wagner though? We need a backup forward. We are being linked to Arnautovic and Mandzukic. What are people expecting?

I would say he's a talented front player with a bit of strength who only started to show some consistancy at Stoke, at left wing and then again last season for West Ham as a striker where he had his best season. Very much a late developer. Very much a player we shouldnt be paying a lot for, but one that could surely good asset for the squad and competition for the front places

He spent far too much of his time from 17-25 trying to live up to his reputation as the bad boy of Austrian football to have the career his natural ability deserved, but he's mellowed a fair bit now, and when it all comes together for him(not often enough granted) he's as good as anybody in the Premier League at attacking the box from out wide(left and right)and is virtually unstoppable.

Not suggesting we should sign him, certainly not for £50m, but we could do worse, a lot worse

This is not what is needed - what we need is for our manager to be flexible with his tactics & realise that when needed, Rashford & Martial are more than capable of providing goals upfront if he makes the right tactical changes to get the best out of them - not play them like sole target men.

That has not happened & instead we are potentially targeting another target man? If one does not work - we are going to use another? Rashford & Martial in terms of backup strikers are up their with the best pairing of back up strikers there is at a club full stop.

This is a waste of time. Unless we can get him for around 25m - which is never going to happen - then let’s just move on. If we pay 40 or 50m for Marko fecking Arnautovic, I just fecking give up.

I'm well aware of what he used to be like and he has definitely mellowed but he's still incredibly inconsistent and very moody on the pitch. He didn't score until December last season and was generally utterly dogshit up until then. He has all the talent in the world but he's not worth buying for any amount of money in case he decides he can't be arsed.

After his last good season (2015/16) he was pretty off at Euro 2016 and then terrible in 2016/17. What are the chances that he's gonna be terrible next year?

Exactly, we don't need another one.

This.

Unless West Ham can find another striker that can help them avoid relegation otherwise they won't sell Arnautovic. The cost of relegation is just so much more than 50M, and Arnautovic's importance to West Ham is just like Vardy to Leicester. West Ham will not make the same mistake as Stoke. Quality striker comes at a hefty price tag in today's market and there is always a risk that transfer doesn't work out as good as originally planned. West Ham just hired Pellegrini, and he will try to improve the team, not weaken it.

I doubt he will be available unless he pushes for a move.

I agree 100% with you. If I was the CEO I would have fired him. Honestly, not because he didnt deliver any trophies, but because the standard and the style of performances is not acceptable. In addition I would have turned to Enrique, whom with the likes of Lukaku, Martial, Sanchez, Pogba, Mata and Rashford at his disposal would have taken us to a higher level

How would Enrique have done better than Jose? Pep ran away with the title and we came second. Our playing style was tumescent but and it’s been said a million times. The manager has patched up the team all season as it’s full of average players. Oh I give up what is the point. Let’s see how we look next season with new additions.

“Mourinho's (well hidden) eyes were also turned towards two players of the Russian national team: Aleksandr Golovin of CSKA Moscow and Fëdor Smolov, Krasnodar striker.’’

Cracking player.

Yes Mourinho does deserve major criticism for the way we play but some do overrate our players quite a lot as you mentioned we still have some very average players who are getting playing time beyond their talent deserves hopefully Mourinho fixes it this season otherwise we may have to look for another manager soon because buck stops with him.

Totally agree but in my opinion he’s done well in his time so far. So to keep him makes sense. The fact City flew this season has affected a lot of people’s expectations in my opinion. No manager would have done significantly better with this squad and Jose signings look good to me. We should see the benefits of his signings for years to come with Bailey Lukaku Pogba Matic the spine of our team. I’m actually looking forward to a fit a flying Sanchez also after a rest and preseason. Plus the new players will add a bit of excitement and improve our overall play. Jose teams have always been functional but they’ve also been great to watch as well often pumping teams 2-3-4 nil. The narrative that he plays dull dreadful football has been fed by this team this year no doubt but it’s not always been the case. I can’t wait to he’s got us firing on all cylinders with all the players bought in to his ways.

At this point in time, I'm not fussed about whether Jose stays or goes.

I don't have the utmost belief in him and his management style, but I have even less belief in all the successors touted to take over from him.

Can't believe that we are being linked with him, we should be signing world class players or at least being linked with them, a former Stoke and west ham player says it all. While our rivlsr sign or are linked with better players. I'm sorry I think we can do at lot better

I think this might well turn out to be this summer's version of the stories the media perpetuated last year about United signing Joe Hart.

And there are people in here supporting this “rumour”? Of all our problems a balc up striker is probably at the bottom of the list.

And who pays 50m for a backup striker? Jose has Sanchez, Rashford and Martial who can all play back up striker if needed.

I have but this squad needs improvement for this season coming not in 4 years. But come on a RB with 7 first team appearances for £20m. City got one of the best prospects in the world for less than £30m in Gabriel Jesus. That was just 18 months ago.

Hang on, Jesus was the exact same age as Dalot and had only played around thirty games. He was also nearly twice the price.

How are those signings as different as you are making out?

Can it be to do with his pundit work for RT during the World Cup, so he's obliged to follow certain games now in preparation (involving Russia)?

At the same time, we could buy all of WBA’s players from this season and still there would be people bigging up every single one of them.

Just like Mane...

I don't think too many of the flawless scouts on here that said Mane wasn't good enough have owned up to it. It will be the same here if we sign Arnautovic and he impresses them any. Not saying he is a world beater but absolutely would be a good addition to the squad and add a bit of verve and grit to our bench.

If we paid £40m—let alone £50m—for Arnautovic, I’d be drooling if United came sniffing around one of my players.

Agree with other posters that he’d be hard to prize away from West Ham for much less. Even with the money in hand, they’d struggle to get a replacement at or near his level. The truth is they’d have to bring an overlooked talent or diamond in the rough. That sort of recruitment isn’t something West Ham have pulled of very often of late. Recruitment is one of their biggest problems. If they are remotely realistic about it, surely they have to know this.

The only two things I could see keeping his fee lower than a god awful £40m+ would be Gold & Co getting greedy and taking an offer ~£30m. That’s be about £10 in profit less wages. They seem to think in general business terms with little footballing vision for the club.

The other thing would be Arnautovic demanding out and being too hard to hold onto. Can you imagine his antics? He’d be unbearable. Noble would drag him out of the locker room himself. He’d have to go.

By the way, not too excited about the prospect of bringing in Arnautovic. The only thing that give me hope are that he’d be—presumably—a Mourinho player and how he played this past season. Other than that, his attitude and wastefulness over the years really stands out to me.

He’s more comfortable on the left or up top than on the right. Is that really what we need? When a right winger is needed, this is a little puzzling unless he can do a job there. Probably a decent back up #9, but I’d prefer a decent young player to bring through in that role.

I could see him running the channels well and being a bring a bully. Mourinho could probably grow that well.

There are far deeper problems in our attack that personnel, though. Just about anyone we bring in would be putting lipstick on a pig without fundamental changes to approach and coaching. Arnautovic is just about underwhelming on his own. I don’t see him being a transformative signing.

Cautiously optimistic is probably where I am on this one.
