Marcus Rashford (out) | signs for Villa on loan

Because Suarez and RVP are better than Rashford. It's an absurd comparison. Prime Suarez could demand £500k per week in today's market. He would make more than Rashford. I have seen reports that Haaland is getting £600k+ per week from City. We have also been playing relegation level football for the better part of the last 18 months. Can you name these world class players in relegation level teams? Players also need the right environment to thrive.

There are players who earn more than Rashford. You act like Rashford is the highest paid player in the world which just isn't the case. If you are going to debate, you need to provide contex. You really aren't making the point that you think you are.

So what's your point? is Rashford an elite player who's going to tear it up in a much better side or not? I've made my points that real top talents can thrive in below par teams, you seem to be tip toeing around drawing comparisons with the talents I've mentioned when most people will agree that Rashford should be that player or close to it, as a 27 year old winger/forward playing for Manchester United, earning 250k-300k a week. We aren't a relegation level side by the way, that's just nonsense.

Form is subjective, you only need to look at the performance threads to ss that, would you take a job where your wages were dependent on what someone thinks of how well you're doing on a weekly basis?

I think most people's wage security is based on exactly that principle yeah, if you don't perform you don't get years of pay irrespective. Players are lucky they get a contracted guarantee wage but it shouldn't and doesn't all have to be guaranteed and it currently isn't hence they get less when out of the CL.

You've reimagined the notion of appearance dependent pay as if it's pay determined on the redcafe player ranking.

Most people have the option to change their employer whenever they choose, footballers don't, that's why they have contracts that guarantee a set amount and + or - the performance related bits

The real issue here is the amount he's guaranteed

I haven't reimagined anything, the performance threads show that the matter of form is subjective, it's an example of why you could never base a players salary on just form/performance

I pop back in here now and again to see if there's any actual news regarding this matter and I still see some posters tieing themselves in knots trying to justify and defend this bloke.
He's taken a metaphorical dump on the club, the fans, the manager and his team mates and I for one detest the idea that he might wear the shirt again.
I don't pretend to know (or be interested in) the ins and outs of FFP or PSR but this guy should be either gone from the club or banished from the first team/squad regardless of all that stuff.
Nobody, repeat nobody, is bigger than the manager or the club.

Tell em how you really feel then lad

Bit harsh on one of our own, even though he has fallen out of favor.
Bit harsh for him to be performing poorly at the club he grew up at. Wouldn’t surprise me if he has anything to do with the leaks and the bad dressing room ego. Since he’s been there through all the managers since LVG.

Loan to Italian club could be good outcome as you'd think Rashford would be able to perform well there, and then a sale for some decent fee would be ideal. But we're far from it. Giving Rashford contract until 2028 and on such a huge wages looks really bad. Same for Casemiro's 4 year contract and big salary, same for Mount's (reported) big salary, Shaw...

93 pages and 10 million updates from media and all of this will result in a loan for 6 months to AC Milan with Utd paying half the wages. We may as well keep him and use him off the bench when your front line are tired.

Anyone else notice that the leaked team news has stopped since Rashford frozen out? Coincidence?

Hear me out, in 2 weeks, once he finds out that there is no real interest for him out there, he will release another impromptu interview while he is rescuing animals from the fires in LA and will say that his heart has been only in Manchester and he will fight for his place. This will be after he posts daily videos of him training really hard by himself.

With the exception of the fires in LA, this is exactly how I see this panning out.

My point is that even great players will decline in an awful team. The reality is that Haaland scores goals for fun at City but would struggle at United. Is Haaland not worth his wage?

We are currently 6 points above the relegation zone with a squad that cost hundreds of millions. We have 23 points in 20 matches with a negative goal difference. We are a historically bad team for a club of our size. It's just a fact.

Again, Suarez and RVP never played in teams as bad as this United team so it's an absurd comparison. Even if you want to compare them, both Suarez and RVP would earn significantly more than Rashford. They would both easily be on £500k+.

It's very difficult to judge our players because we are just a terribly run club. We have spent £1.6 Billion on players in the past 12 years and none of them have produced consistently. Even Bruno was awful to start this season. Common sense says it's no longer only an individual player problem.

All of you who criticize Rashford never want to admit how awful we are, so your arguments are disingenuous . Yes Rashford is responsible for his career but clubs need to provide an environment for players to produce. As I said before, Postecoglou said Salah would struggle at Spurs. Salah is better than Rashford and Spurs are ahead of us in the table. So even he agrees with me.

Send Rashford on loan to a better team in an easier league so he can raise his value. Rashford is capable of producing in the right environment.

As per usual we tackled this all wrong. Rashford should have been sold the moment managers started highlighting that he's got disciplinary problems. He would be rushed out of the door, we would have made a killing out of his deal, the fans would complain just as we did when Ince/Beckham left and somehow down the line we'll learn that actually the club was right in selling.

We opted to keep him way past his time which in turn ended up with the dirty laundry being aired and now the entire world know that we want to get rid of him and he wants to leave.

I hope we learn from this with Garnacho. If he's got disciplinary issues then we should sell now before this degenerate into another Rashford.
There are far more players with "disciplinary issues" than you realise. A lot amongst the best players. It's just usually they don't let it affect their performances. If you started selling talented players who had problems then you'd quickly be falling down the league.

I saw a post somewhere that said every time Rashford has some especially bad performances that he gets called out for, he always turns up at a school shortly after

Yeah this is what I expect. Fully expect him to recommit to United.

I'd say they've gauged the marketplace and he'll do a u turn and cop on, for a while at least. He'll know there's nowhere near the money anywhere else worth playing. He either trains and plays as hard as the manager requires or he sits out his career for however long. He's been coasting for years now, it has to end. The club have all the power here. It's a terrible contract but we hold all the cards really.

Rashford seems a man reborn, there is a steel to his gaze and a determination that emanates from him. He is at ease as I speak with him at his home, dressed in Manchester Untied training gear and lounging back after offering me coffee. 'Sorry, we only have instant' he says with a half smirk. You can take the boy out of Fallowfield...

'Has it been tough, of course, but I have never forgotten my roots. I will never forget how difficult it was, how hard I had to work, to get here. I have seen a lot of managers come and go, but I feel all of them have added to my game and I can contribute. I am the first to admit there have been distractions this season, maybe more so than others, and I have struggled with illness as well.'

I ask what his goals are, what his plans are for 2025. Any New Year's resolutions? He laughs, looking out the window and seems pensieve.

'I take it one day at a time. I want to play every week and score goals for United. I have never wanted anything else.'

So the rumours of moves to prestigious clubs like AC Milan were just rumours?

'I just want to focus on my football here. Ruben has told me if I work hard, there is a place for me and I have never not worked hard.'

And what about all the external noise, the food banks, fashion line, are these things a distraction.

'I just want to play football but I will keep pushing the social impact stuff, the food banks and the book club.'

As always Rashford is happy to chat once the interview finishes, I sense he is ready to push for his spot again and hope we see him in a United shirt again soon. As I leave he waves me off, I see him wave in my rear view mirror all the way along his drive. Seeing him there, relaxed but focused, I know the boy who joined them a lifetime ago has another chapter to write at Manchester United.

This is disingenuous though because he reguarly visits his old school regardless of form. That's just people who call anything PR. It's such an overused term on social media and just comes up when a person dislikes a player.

I'll be infuriated if he's still here stinking out the place end of the transfer window, but we've sold Garnacho, who should be useful

I would have a lot of respect for Rashy if he came out and honestly said, I've lost all love of football and am going to retire because I realised charity work was my passion, or even that he needs a new challenge and will take a pay cut to go elsewhere

Instead we are stuck with him and probably can't shift him instead forcing us to sell players who are worth keeping, at least for now. Antony looks to be another we will probably be stuck with, plus the sick notes

The decision making around contracts and signings has been nothing short of a shit show.

He's like that video floating around the internet a few years ago about some person taking off their socks and giving them to a cold homeless person. Hey it's great you did that, but posting that video of yourself doing that on the internet so millions of people can call you a hero is pretty self-serving and makes you more of a narcissistic asshole than hero.

Just read that Milan will need to pick between Rashford and Walker because of restrictions over non-EU players so we could be diddled here, lads.

Brexit means Brexit. Thanks Jim.
What a decision. An uninterested Rashford or a past it Kyle Walker.

Walker with no pace now is finished , he simply has nothing else at all. We all know about Rashford.

Which half of the shit sandwich will they take..

The Glazers made many mistakes in the transfer market. But the biggest one is definitely offering these big contracts which broke the wage structure of the club and makes it so difficult to get rid of players.

Letting the odd player go on a free is better than these big contracts. At least, they showed some courage in not bowing down to De Gea & Pogba.

De Gea and Pogba should never, ever be lumped together as rotten apples in the squad. De Gea performed at an extremely high level for at least five seasons, whereas I doubt we could identify five games over his United career where Pogba excelled.

De Gea accepted a massive wage cut to remain with the club, even after it became clear we were bringing in Onana. Pogba fleeced the club of wages for the six seasons be played for us after we spent 90BP -- at the time the most ever spent on a transfer -- that was in the end nothing more than shoveling cash into the furnace.

It's great he does that, but at the end of the day, we shouldn't even know that he does that. But we do, because when he does something like that he blasts it all over social media. Yeah but more I mean he does it even when it's not publicised. That was my point. But meh.

Fair points. I didn't even see us getting as much as you proposed. £10M loan fee plus £280k a week for 20 weeks is £15.6M. That's a lot!

I figured we could get £8M or so total (loan fee plus any wages). That would cover all his wages the rest of the year. I think that's reasonable to expect.

Of course we as fans want him gone, but I think a loan with option or straight loan is more likely. I see Arsenal as a potential fit with Saka and Jesus both hurt. £8M for them is reasonable and low risk to pair Rashford with Havertz, Martinelli, and Trossard, their only other healthy forwards. Rashford may even be better than 1-2 of them.

I imagine the sticking point in negotiations is we're trying to get an obligation to buy built in. I imagine Arsenal would ball at that, as would I. But you'd think we could work out a loan to cover all (or nearly all) his wages at least.

To me, that is far better than Rashford sitting the sidelines the rest of the year. Theres a fair chance he rebuilds some of his value in a better squad, and in the meanwhile we get wage coverage. If things work out poorly, it'll be hard to sell him in the summer. But it'll probably be hard to sell him anyway if he goes 9 months without playing football, and we could always try to reintegrate him next summer if there are no takers.

This all assumes Rashford is basically done at United for now. If we could reintegrate him now, I'd be more judicious in negotiations. But if not, covering his wages the rest of the year in a straight loan deal would be sufficient for me.

This is the key assumption United management have to grapple with. If they view Marcus Rashford as completely useless then I would even agree to a free transfer just to get his 350k/week off the books. But I still can't see any club who could afford Rashford wanting to take on these obscene wages of a footballer who is nowhere near the quality expected of those wages. And of the clubs who might be willing to pay those wages, would Marcus want to play for them?

The only way I see this ending is either Marcus remaining with United and pulling his finger out, or we heavily subsidize his wages as he plays for a top club that he really doesn't want to play for but would reluctantly agree to play for. And that might not go down well with supporters of that new club.

I'd say they've gauged the marketplace and he'll do a u turn and cop on, for a while at least. He'll know there's nowhere near the money anywhere else worth playing. Pity we can't just give him his cards, however as the time passes it looks like he will be staying

There are far more players with "disciplinary issues" than you realise. A lot amongst the best players. It's just usually they don't let it affect their performances. If you started selling talented players who had problems then you'd quickly be falling down the league.

Senior players do tend to get cockier with time. For example a young Keane allowed Clough to punch him. Prime Keane would have probably floored the drunk. SAF had most of his issues with senior players (Beckham, Ince, Keane, RVN, Kanchelskis etc).

Garnacho had already multiple disciplinary issues, he seemed to have burnt bridges with Atletico (Ben Jacobs), he pissed his adoptive nation when he publicly chose Ronaldo over Messi which is crazy considering that Argentina isn't the type of country you would dare insulting their own legends and he showed defiance when he refused to celebrate a goal in front of fans. That would be concerning if Garnacho was in his prime but we're talking of a 20 year old here. At that age he shouldn't be as defiant and as cocky and as said, this will probably get worse in time.

A well run club would take these things into account and would evaluate if its worth investing on a player who is defiant or if its worth cashing in now before he ruins his career and therefore his value. Ultimately its all about the player's worth. Will his defiance catapult him in becoming a better player? After all the likes of Cantona and Ibra were able to become top player despite having such defiant character. Some might say that such defiance was key to their development. However defiance might also lead to self destruction. For every Cantona there's a Gazza, for every Ibra there's a Best.

I do remember when Keith Gillespie left the club. He was involved in a fee + swap deal for Andy Cole which, considering the talent of the young player, sounded like a piss take. I was quite young at the time but I remember it quite vividly cause my cousin was so angry about it that we nearly crashed with his car. Turned out the SAF was right.

I wouldnt call it cockiness, its more confidence which in turn breeds leadership qualities.

A lot of what we're seeing particularly with the likes of Rashford is a symptom rather than the player being the cause. 7 years at the club, a lot of those years have been tough, and it saps the energy out of you. Especially when a) you've seen so many false dawns and b) the media (social and non-social) scrutinise what you do and twist things about you. Both those have been going on for years. Remember, this is a person who once played half a season with a broken back. Something's obviously drained him in that time for him to just give up.

I genuinely think a change would work wonders for him. Especially abroad where there would be less scrutiny. He's not a leader, he's not the person that will drag you out of a difficult spot. That's no slight on him though, some people just aren't. But I'm intrigued as to how he does in a team that's 'clicked'.

If he doesn't move, this January, we shouldn't reward him with a welcome back hug and sweep this under the carpet. We should show him and future hold outs that we are also willing wreck them, throw the whole Maresca-on-Sterling treatment on him; ban him from the first team, take the jersey number away and deregister him.

Show him that if he still wants to have a chance to play in the World Cup then it's not going to come cheap, he has to sacrifice to get a move and if he doesn't we are more than willing to end his career. If he has any hunger left in him he will do the needful, if not he becomes an example.
