Marcus Rashford new contract thread | It's officially signed

The 85% who voted to sell rather than than give him a huge new contract were rightly laughed at during his purple patch but the truth was probably somewhere in between. He has big flaws in his game.

Not really, it didn't change the fact he'd been crap for 18 months unless people have the memory of a goldfish.

He's not a winger either

Agree with this.

Rashford's goals have to be measured against the fact that when we were successful, the top players didn't play every FA Cup and League cup game.

Playing in the Europa League was also a rarity.

He was top scorer in the League cup last year but 4 of his 6 goals came against championship teams.

Wayne Rooney is (in my opinion) one of the best players to play for united, if you disagree with that fair enough he had his flaws, but he was at least an above average match winner.

Go and watch his performances for us when he was moved to the wing, the man never stopped working for the team and he would more often than not come up with a moment of quality to win a game.

I’m going to say something controversial here, Marcos Rashford is not on the same level as Wayne Rooney and yet he will routinely give up tracking back or getting back into defensive shape.

This is not controversial in the slightest.

He's average technically.

Hes been a match winner for a few years in teams that don't have many match winners. At any other top club he wouldn't be the main guy.

And yes, technically he is average in many areas of his game. The main reason why he blows hot and cold. His form massively influences his effectiveness. The real top players don't flit between world class and bang average like he does on a regular basis and for months on end.

For a top team in a competitive league, he doesn't make the first 11. I just cannot see any of the teams lowering their standards for him.

He is not even on same level as Louis Saha, Chicaritto. Maybe even worst than Forlan, Forlan score much lesser but works ten times harder. Gosh I missed those days when we were blessed with so many good forwards. He has some purple patches when he looked almost Mbappeish but those are exceptions not the norm. There is no bigger joy for a fan to see a youth player make it and I wished it to be Rashford but after 8 years of watching him, you start to realize that hope was misplaced.

I hope Garnacho starts rapidly developing, improving and eventually, potentially even replace Rashford as our starting left winger. I don't like Rashford's attitude, selfishness, sulkiness, casually strolling on the pitch like he's a model on a fashion week instead of pressing and tracking back to help the defense. He might think he's on the same level as Mbappe, and he's delusional if the truly believes so(he certainly behaves like a spoiled frontman, prima-donna, main star of the band).

Needs to be humbled, but Garnacho is still too raw and young so Rashford can't really be dropped, yet. We'll have to tolerate his inconsistency and attitude for some more time, who knows how long.

Sancho isn't on close to that and neither is Rashford.

Firstly we implemented a 200k wage cap shortly after ETH came in, case and bruno are on 175-200. So there's no way Rashford is on more, as the rule is no one will earn more than that going forwards. Rashford has now gone up to 200k. Sancho is on something like 265k - which is still insane, I agree but let's not make out we're paying him insane numbers.
I don't know where you are getting your numbers from. It's pretty well known that Sancho is on 300K/week

"Current chief executive Richard Arnold, director of football John Murtough and manager Erik ten Hag want to avoid a culture of dressing-room jealousy.

Senior players like Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Casemiro and now Fernandes are all in the same pay bracket (£180,000 to £200,000 a week), with sanctions if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. The idea is to have more players paid at that level rather than splash out £500,000 a week on individual superstars.

"

Jadon Sancho - £262,500

United agreed to pay Jadon Sancho £350,000-per-week when he joined the club from Borussia Dortmund. But 12 months on, his pay has been cut by almost £100,000-per-week, giving him a weekly wage of £262,500-per-week. Improved performances from the 22-year-old this season could see United return to the Champions League.

I’m going to say something controversial here, Marcos Rashford is not on the same level as Wayne Rooney and yet he will routinely give up tracking back or getting back into defensive shape. Against Burnley for the Onana save from the header he is both out of position for the initial cross field pass and then, once he has realised, he runs back only to give up once the player gets to the edge of our box. This is basic, basic stuff. Just the hard yards you need to put in when the club is under pressure. This is the stuff that earns you adoration and patience from the fans when the goals dry up.

I desperately want Rashford to succeed at United and I get the whole “main attacking outlet who is saving his legs to go the other way” thing, but he’s not Rooney and he definitely ain’t Ronaldo, so he’s got to earn the right to play with the ball at his feet.
Nothing controversial. Rooney is a United legend. He did pretty much everything the club asked for for years.
Rashford being Rashford should hardly surprise anyone. I wanted him to be on a much higher trajectory after his first 2 years. But after so many years, I don't think he ever will be. If he can score/assist a lot more, that will compensate his other flaws.

IMO we will do much better with a consistent winger than Rashford. Rashford does score goals but far breaks down far more attacks that could benefit the team. He doesn't stretch the play or bring others in as well, constantly makes bad decisions. He will make a good impact sub but having him as the important player on the pitch only causes problems for the team.

We have to move away from being so individualistic.

Sancho is NOT on £300k a week and never has been.

@stoinz @Hammondo you've written some of the most ridiculous posts i have ever read on this forum... wow! One of you said " average"... "Forlan was better". This level of delusion requires professional help. Also i finally get the Rashford resentment. Its financial...so many hurt comments from people that dont like that a young man makes so much more $$$ than them. Poor sights...

wow

Thanks.

What is the source of this? And how were they able to cut 100K/week? That is no champ change

Isn't Rooney in our top 10 of all time or close to it? Rashford will have to improve a fair bit to even match Rooney.

This is very true.

Rashford's game relies heavily on service. When the team isn't playing well, he likely wont either.

Whereas other top players will be able to influence the entire performance of a team by coming away from their position and get involved in build up and defensive work.

They just told him he’s shit and wasn’t worth the money.
That is not how legal contracts work? :) Otherwise, certain slubhead Maguire would not still be here?

So where’s the controversial part again?

If only we had a better team, I’d love for ETH to drop him for a lack of effort to make it clear that it isn’t an option.

Wouldn’t it be due to us not being in the Champions league last season? Think all our players get a 25% bonus for when we are in the Champions league and therefore don’t get that when we don’t qualify

Is he really lacking effort though?

He game has never been about chasing down and pressing defenders.

To me, he is a fast twitch sprinter, not a long distance athlete and seem to save his legs for those sprints when he gets room in behind.

Yes. See the likes of Mane, Vinicious and Salah off the ball and the effort they put in. His game is not about that because he doesn’t want it to be and lacks intensity off the ball. Sometimes he doesn’t even challenge for the ball when it’s around him.

He will never shine in a non-functioning team. It's been obvious for a long time. He's a very good player, that much is clear, but he's come through the ranks in a dysfunctional club. Been asked to play a lot of different roles as well, which for me hasn't been good for his development. He gets way too much bad press around these forums though. I do agree with his body language on the pitch, and his lack of work rate at times.
Can you elabrotate? He’s a left/right forward, which other roles has he been asked to play?

I don't think he has the engine to press like Mane and Salah did when Klopp was Gegenpressing. It is not lack of effort, i think he and Ten Hag know his limitations and he would be daft to go haring round the pitch like Tevez used to, because he would have nothing in the tank for when its most needed.

Where was the hate when Rashford scored two against Arsenal last year, or the winner V City?

Or even our first goal V Arsenal two weeks ago?
Although it's completely the wrong approach, it is easier to turn a blind eye to a perceived lack of commitment when a player is delivering a consistent stream of goals. Fact of the matter is that Rashford isn't peak Cristiano Ronaldo, so he should be expected to work as hard as any other good (but not peak Ronaldo good), wide forward player.

So he’s not fit for this level? There’s a difference between Tevez and Rooney and this walking around that Rashford does. The ‘not enough in the tank’ for counters is just excuses. He’s a young fit fellow who isn’t good enough to justify the poor output defensively. If he genuinely is incapable then he should gradually be replaced.
