I think he is being asked to hit the near post with his corners. It's just difficult finding the gap between it and the first man.

If he’s being asked to hit the near post then what’s he doing whacking them in waist high ? Someone’s either got to make a spectacular diving header or an air borne volley to make anything of it. I couldn’t work out what the hell he was trying to do because one or two were over hit and came down with snow on the ball.

Take him off set pieces, they're horrendous. Mourinho buys a team of giants but can't get someone good at actually crossing it into those tall players.

He's just not got it right today? Like I said, it's probably difficult to hit it at pace and aim for that area. He's obviously one of the better players at dead balls because the coaching team choose him to take them. They see it in training.

Was trying so hard. Almost too hard. It stated affecting is game. Desperately needs more support.

Our play right now is like, defend ... defend ... lob it high and then we see Rashford busting his gut to chase down this ball .. is easily intercepted by the CB , then again, .... defend .. defend .. Herrera doing 'mad dog' impression .... Matic trying his best but getting overcrowded .. then Rashford goes back to help out Young .. then someone finally manages to pass the ball to him but he is deep in our own half and Lukaku is isolated and marked and he will have to dribble it out of a crowd of LBs and DMs hunting him down ... he passes it to our midfield and they lose the ball in a hurry ... then again ... defend .. defend ... another hopeful delivery which he has to chase down ...

We just don't have any will to move the ball at all. Really hard for any forward to perform in such a mess.

I’m not sure much blame can be attached to the forwards in open play. Chelsea closed the space really well and there just wasn’t enough craft in midfield or delivery from wide to carve anything out for them.

Can we have a real debate outpassioned about him and what he really brings to the team ?

I don't care that the boy is from Manchester, that he is only 19 or so.

He has to provide and what he did against Spurs and Chelsea is clearly not enough. The same goes for Lukaku, Mkhi etc

He's fielded like 10 other players and should be assessed like this.

A fact is that this 3-5-2 or maybe 5-2-1-2 is not made for him to shine, but he is innefective, is can't do anything but running, always far from Lukaku, never in the box, we can;t really touch him.

In a system where we were like Chelsea with one target man and a flying one, Hazard was so better than him and more effective.

I don't want to talk about age or talent because he starts for my club and is poor since 3/4 weeks.

We all need to calm down with him, his supposed "qualities".

I really think that he shouldn't be near our starting eleven these days (Like Lukaku, Mkhi, Herrera, Valencia)

I think he wasn't brave enough for his headed chance, he ducked down when he had to concentrate on getting that ball on target.
He didnt need to get it on target. If he doesnt duck and close his eyes all he has to do is get it across goal ans lukaku has a tap in

Not sure what "outapassioned" means but you're on the 64th page of a thread all about him. I suspect you can find your "real debate" in here somewhere.

I'm going to put my tin hat on here but I'd love City to sign him and for pep to get his hands on him, and this is no way a slagging off of Jose or a pep v Jose comparison but I just honestly believe that Pep with his attacking philosophy would get so much more out of him and take him to another level, with the right coaching he'd become one of the best if not the best forward in the world in the next 4 or 5 years

Him and Martial would really thrive at City. If Pep could get Sterling to play this well...

Got to be the worst corner taker the club has ever had?

But anyways, in regards to his performance, It was another game in which he just disappeared and that is my main concern with Rashford. He has far too many of those games for my liking. Obviously he is very talented and I don't think the system we set up with helps him, But he has to do more in these games. We cannot afford to have so many players flitter in and out of games. Sad to say it, But Sane looks like a much more complete player at the moment.

he does look more complete, but that's also down to the way City play to his strengths so he's obviously going to see more of the ball and the way the team play as a whole he has more opportunities to provide goal scoring chances to the number of players that get in and around the box when he's attacking, he also has more space to attack the full backs with the passes he gets from Silva and KDB

Brendan Rodgers had Sterling playing this well...
Rodgers is good at getting a lot out of attacking players. That is his strongest quality.

He's an absolute self-obsessed wanker who couldn't put together a half-decent defence to save his life though.

Why the feck would you love that?

I'd love if we got a manager who can get the best out of Rashford and Martial. They shouldn't have to go to City for that.

Sadly for him, seems he'll be playing for defensive coaches both at international and club level.

He had his moments v Brazil - but when you look at guys like Mbappe and Martial, their close control is just on another level. With Rashford you always feel he might beat one or two players but then he will eventually lose control of the ball and his first touch in general still needs a lot of work. It doesn't help that he plays in defensive sides it is true as it encourages him to be extra direct with the ball but there's still something off with the accuracy in terms of ball carrying and the decision making at speed. Under a great attacking coach, he could blossom and make all the dots connect.

It was frustrating watching him yesterday because you know he's better than the kick and run player that the tactics employed require of him. Unless, he is being coached by forward thinking managers, I fear he might be a better Bellion and he's got so much than that.

I just don’t see the development to be honest. He just doesn’t have the close control of the ball to be a really quality player. He’s a good player but I’m not sure if I see him going beyond that.

It is weird, because he's english and United.. so normally I would be so excited over a player who is both, starting for both and getting hype from the press, but I feel like I just don't have that connection with him and the way he plays where I feel woah what a sensational talent.

I have to say that aside, there are attributes he has which are so good when taken in isolation.. (free-kicks, finishing, range of skills) but the consistency with which he applies them during a given game, and the lack of control of the ball in general.. makes him a very untidy player to watch and aesthetically he's not that pleasing. His attitude is brilliant though and because of his persistence, he is effective despite his tender years.

Age is on his side, one hopes it all starts to just knit together and we see more smoother, seamless performances where the ball begins to stick closer to him, manages to make those lay-offs, get shots off after embarking on a run etc.

Has he been through a growth spurt, before breaking through into the first team set up? that might explain the clumsiness with the ball at times.. and once he fills out more, he will hold ball up more effectively and just be in better control of his limbs.

I'd say that depends to be honest. I think he's already a quality player. That's without even considering his age.

Maybe if we expect him to develop into a world class dribbling winger, the close control might hinder him. But hopefully he develops into a CF, or well, wide forward. He's got more than enough good qualities to really excel there.

He's a striker. Don't think he'll ever be a top quality player in another position.

If I had one word to describe Rashford, it would be 'weapon'.

Maybe he isn't going to be the best, first choice attacker in the long term vision of playinf style and best tactics for this current team.

But he should be used for a purpose: to take set pieces; to provide an outlet for the defence; to take on players in long, straight lines at points where there are large areas of space into which to run.

He is a player who is less about being part of the team and more about having attributes that should be used by the team.

Definitely agree.
I'd like to see him in different tactical scenarios that should enable him to be more rounded. He seems to have a good foundation but the punt and run only exploits his pace and nothing more. This is why I've never been a fan of him deployed as a wide player, and if it wasn't for a lack of personnel I'd love to have seen him on loan where he'd be playing upfront.
Like you said, he's got time in his side but it gets harder if certain are not aspects quickly addressed.

Agreed. He's technically not great and the dribble linked above shows exactly what he's missing. I know a lot don't like the comparison between Martial and Rashford, but compare the pieces of skill on each players' page and you can see the difference. Rashford almost goes past his men whereas Martial does and gets the assist. The former feels a little raw, inconsistent and a little inexperienced (which is obvious as he's only 20). However, you hit the nail on the head in that he has the ability to pull a rabbit out of a hat - skill and goal against Anderlecht, goal vs Celta Vigo, the assists against Palace, ending Demichelis' career. At 20, he has so many years to improve and has a great foundation to build upon. In my opinion, he needs to bulk up a little (maybe a lot) which will help him become a powerful center forward - unlike Martial, he's just simply built to be a striker.
