MotM for me today. Calm under pressure and keeps the ball rolling.

That one time when he controlled the ball that came from behind while he was facing the goal was class. Perfect touch and a simple pass back to De Gea. A worse touch and Origi would have been all over him.

Dude looks the business now, period. It's like he's finally gotten his head around the league and showing his true self.

When his head is in place he's immense. Has all the attributes. Strong, quick, good in the air, can play and a decent passer.

I just love how he has proved "everyone" wrong. He has become one of our most important players.

Yes. I was thinking 'woah, nice touch, nice touch'. Don't think the commentator on my stream even said anything about it.

Moments like that are what help the team. A poor touch, or letting it bounce completely changes the situation. Shame he had Carrick in front of him in the first half. I think he really wanted to play it out from the back or find a team mate but he didn't have any options really. Perhaps Herrera can be culpable for this too.

Has some moment of trying to be too cute playing football and ended up sloppy today, but overall one of our best performers for today. As mentioned else where, today the team lack communication as a whole. Players on different wave length as mess up play all over the pitch.

Totally agree. Carrick had his bad game where he hid into his shell. There is a big gap between Carrick and other midfielders in the first half. Rojo, Jones tried to create some rhythm but Carrick instead of trying be positive and play forward just anchored too deep which cut our team in half. No way to play simple to the front players without going for long ball.

Similarly in defensive phase, Carrick tends to stick too close to our CBs and leave gap for L'pool to beat our pressing. Instead going out pick up loose ball, Carrick is too negative and left his teammate effort of nicking the ball away in vain.

He's had a good couple of months. To go with his two shite seasons beforehand. Let's not get carried away. Plenty left to do.

That's a bit harsh. Players who really are as shit as he looked those two seasons wouldn't be capable of playing as well as him these last couple of months. I thought he was a pub footballer but I was wrong. He's clearly capable of performing at a much higher level than I thought. Fair play.

Our defence should be Valencia, Rojo, and two others. Our most important centre-back.

Aggressive in the tackle and rarely put a foot wrong today.

Saved us a lot of cash too with the Lindelof deal being postponed 'til the summer. At the very least, we can tell Benfica to take whatever we offer, or else we're content to rely with on our Argie Warrior for another season.

Yeah I thought he was our best player today and has been our best CB this season. Bailly can hopefully nail down the place next to him when he returns.

I'm a big critic of Carrick's particular weaknesses but to fair, he was trying to do what he's been doing the last 10-15 games and it's worked well (although imo not enough, which is why I want someone else with more energy to try the deepest midfield position). He wants to play deep because that strengthens his ability (short, middle and long passing) and reduces his weaknesses (lack of legs, seeing the whole pitch in front of him as opposed to the hustle and bustle of the middle park).

I will put down half our team's problem against a high press and good passing teams on Mourinho. We're too reactive. We absolutely tried to play long ball today and I'm sure, his instructions to Rojo and Jones was 'don't pass into that first station/phase press'. Of course Carrick didn't help but we really need to implement and stamp our own superiority in games and trust the ball at feet. Once you play out from the back and beat that first press, the whole pitch opens up but we don't try for it. Pogba/Zlatan are instructed to knock that long ball down. It's disappointing. I understand he's done incredibly well to steady the ship and get us this progressive but I want to see more progress on this side of our game.

Problem is Carrick is not the player who can beat the first press. He needs time for extra touches & thinking time. He would drop deep and stretch our play regardless of game plan (today negative affected us). Secondarily, we rely too much on Pogba to burst through midfield/ break the pressing. With Pogba may possibly have a bad game like today, our midfield can't create any consistent passing rhythm and our front men being isolated.

It's not until Fellaini came on that's when we gave up and bypass our midfield with long ball. We was a little bit better in playing through the our midfield prior to that on second half. It's just that Pogba had a bad game while Rooney is not clumsy with possession, Martial too slack with his movement, players' sloppiness... that prevent us to dominate the midfield. Zlatan had very few touches on ball, but today he's surprising tidy and efficient with his use of the ball than his usual wastefulness.

Anyways the point is we replace an "invisible" Carrick with a visible sloppy Rooney and he did improve. We need better than both though, as we can't rely on other players' doing a specific task all the time. We're too close to go back to Fellaini as our no 10. We need players to mix thing up and contribute.

Definitely our best centre back this season. Solid in every game. And at the start of last season I didn't rate him and start of this season I expected him to be sold but he's been very solid this season. He will be the first one I'll pick in our XI among Bailly, Smalling, Jones and Rojo.

This is true, it's just mental to think given where public opinion was with him at the start of the season. Just goes to show how fine the line is with top level players (or any elite athlete), getting their head right is key.

I really, really wanted him gone in the summer but he's been very good lately. Shows what Mourinho can do but I think long-term he's not the solution.

He looked absolutely knackered in the last few minutes which is understandable.
Speaking of which, he wasn't fully matchfit today but he still started. Does that confirm that Jose sees him as a first choice?

I mean the CB partnership has been mostly a mess this season. Smalling breaking his toe. Bailly getting a knee injury and then going to Afcon. Rojo and Jones stepping up to the plate.

It's a complicated situation all four are available and could result in a problem. It's a good problem to have, but still a problem.

Considering he came back from injury, he was good. The difference between him as LCB vs others playing there plus him as LCB vs him as LB is massive.
He needs to have more control of his clearances though.

I put him down as MOTM too. He just looks so elegant on the ball and rarely put a foot wrong again. As I've said before, nothing seems to get past him. Some of his touches were sublime and he covered for Jones several times when Liverpool players could have gone in on goal and he's great going forward too.. I'm glad that Mourinho rates him and that performance justified his selection.

People still hating on him, but I don't care. The guy's just what we need.

I was the same, I never thought he was United quality. He's looked brilliant this last few months, and seeing him mop up mistakes made by Jones shows he's really reading the game and playing with confidence.
I'm really happy with our options at centre back, and I never thought after last season that Smalling would end up my least favoured pick.

His "elegance" on the ball nearly cost us a goal when he passed it straight to Lallana who played in Wijnaldum. Luckily his shot was shit.

Don't get me wrong, I think Rojo played well yesterday for the most part. I just find it weird how players mistakes are ignored or defended when they're going through a phase of being popular on here. He would've been crucified if that happened at the start of the season. Everyone was laughing at Stones on here yesterday for something smaller when his clearance was actually blocked down and not just passed straight to the opposition player.

He played last season and the start of this season as a left-back. The vast majority of his performances at left-back, though not all, have been below the acceptable standard for a club like United. In contrast, his performances at centre-back were ok in his first season at the club so him performing well given a run of games in central defence really shouldn't come as a huge shock.

For whatever reason, lots of posters here and elsewhere, failed to make this distinction.

At club level, Rojo is a central defender. He was for Sporting and also in Russia. For Argentina he performs as a left-back, though clearly the responsibilities must be different to that of a normal left-back, given that some of their attacking players aren't known for tracking back.

Every United player on that pitch bar DDG made mistakes! :smirk: One errant pass doesn't negate an otherwise excellent performance. Remember he also covered for other mistakes too.

Oh, absolutely. He saved Jones big time. But Rojo's mistake was almost as big which is why I found it weird it's hardly been mentioned whereas Jones got a lot of criticism for his one.

He wasn't even that bad at LB, imo. It was like Smalling at RB for me. Still decent defensively for the most part, they just offered nothing attacking wise. But that's surely to be expected when a centre back is forced to play full back.

It is weird and definitely a real phenomenon. Mind you, up until yesterday Jones was going through a similar phase of popularity to Rojo. Mistakes aside, I think Rojo had an overall better game than Jones, hence less is being made of that error. Plus Jones is getting it in the neck for making a couple of passes back to the keeper which frustrated people watching.
