I wonder if it would be possible to get some statistics on how many of each country's international players choose to play abroad. Perhaps it's because United has never had a Germany International [as far as I know] that it seems that Germans are especially likely to choose to stay in Germany.
Of course money comes into play, especially for Brazil and Argentina, it doesn't really mean that Brazilians are more comfortable leaving their country. But I wouldn't be surprised if, versus most other nations, German national team members are twice as likely to play for a club in Germany as well.
You'd think with so many of them being multilingual that it would make them good candidates for moving abroad.
Since '34 the number of German internationals in the World Cup 22/23 that played abroad from each of the four top leagues is:
Italy - 19 (6 from 60-70s, 11 from mid 80s to 90s, 2 from mids 90s onwards)
England - 5 (all from late 90s onwards)
France - 4 (all from mid 90s onwards)
Spain - 2 (all from Madrid in mid 70s to 80s)
So about 8% of the World Cup squads played outside of Germany, over half of this being from Italy, but in the past two decades no country have had more than England and overall they've had the second most. The fact that Madrid have Ozil and Khedira gives a false perception that Germans are more likely to go to Spain than England. Judging by World Cup squads is far from a perfect measure but it gives a good idea.
