Marco Reus

I wonder if it would be possible to get some statistics on how many of each country's international players choose to play abroad. Perhaps it's because United has never had a Germany International [as far as I know] that it seems that Germans are especially likely to choose to stay in Germany.

Of course money comes into play, especially for Brazil and Argentina, it doesn't really mean that Brazilians are more comfortable leaving their country. But I wouldn't be surprised if, versus most other nations, German national team members are twice as likely to play for a club in Germany as well.

You'd think with so many of them being multilingual that it would make them good candidates for moving abroad.

Since '34 the number of German internationals in the World Cup 22/23 that played abroad from each of the four top leagues is:

Italy - 19 (6 from 60-70s, 11 from mid 80s to 90s, 2 from mids 90s onwards)
England - 5 (all from late 90s onwards)
France - 4 (all from mid 90s onwards)
Spain - 2 (all from Madrid in mid 70s to 80s)

So about 8% of the World Cup squads played outside of Germany, over half of this being from Italy, but in the past two decades no country have had more than England and overall they've had the second most. The fact that Madrid have Ozil and Khedira gives a false perception that Germans are more likely to go to Spain than England. Judging by World Cup squads is far from a perfect measure but it gives a good idea.

Yes Rooney going to Norwich and Reus moving to us is great comparison and both are probably same on the likelihood of happening. Actually, I don't know why I bothered to come into an argument with you in the transfer forum, you've a tendency to be an idiot here.

Gotze, not Reus. Reus might be a realistic target as he doesn't attract so many strong European teams, Gotze does. And you've already pointed out that I'm an idiot last Summer when I said we wouldn't sign a midfielder, no need to repeat yourself. :smirk:

 young's not a midfielder? we were in the hunt for a CM anyway but we werent able to close the deal.

You also said we wouldn't spend more than £20 million net. How did that one go for you, Nostradamus?

Let's get the best German and Spanish kids, and mix it up with our English kids.

Not very well, close to £20m off the mark (£48m spent, about £10m earned). It would have been slightly closer had we managed to offload Gibson and Kuszczak as we wanted to but neither left for various reasons. I was wrong about that one admittedly but I never called anyone who didn't agree with me on that part a cretin, while I got a lot of stick (and insults) when I said we wouldn't buy a midfielder.

Unlucky for Joshua King that Monchengladbach's first eleven are so fantastic this season.

Whats unlucky for him is we decided to take this spastic decision to send him to the German side in the first place.

Should have send him to where he would have been sure of first team football.

I said it before and I say it again, he's a world class talent.

Germany are going to be immense over the next ten years.

I would be surprised if we got either Goetze or Reus - we may have to unearth some gems.

I'd never heard of him until I read an argument between a City and Liverpool fan a couple of weeks ago, he certainly has a cracking right foot shot on him.

I can see the doom-mongers are out in force though on our chances of landing any of Europe's hot young prospects.....To the Rodwell thread I guess.

Bayern Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has officially confirmed to a German Newspaper that they are interested in him. Not much news though, everyone already sees him lining up in a Bayern shirt next season.

We didn't decide that, we recommended the club and he decided it was the right place for him. It's not like we forced him to go there against his will...

This guy looks a bit like Ozil, similar hair style and all when Ozil was at Werder.. hmm

Just saw his hat-trick, well taken goals. First goal was almost Messiesque!!

Wow, the first goal was sublime, he looks like he's just playing with the defenders. We've got to kidnap this guy.

Is he really right footed? His left is fantastic.

wiki:Reus' contract with Gladbach is set to expire in 2015, but his deal reportedly has a buy-out clause of €18 million, which will take effect in the summer of 2012.

Very composed finishing here, the lad looks like he'll be a star. It's a shame that reports are coming that he's almost certain to be Bayern bound next season.

18 million euros, steal - off to bayern as well :(

You can see just from those highlights that he is benefitting from his team-mates' work too, though. Arango's regularly feeding him and Hermann's an intelligent wide player, and while Hanke isn't a particularly impressive individual play he does much of the hard-running and is selfless on the ball, and overall they're a direct counter-attacking side - the side's geared up to help Reus. Doesn't take anything away from his ability but it is easy to get carried away, IMO. From what I've seen the idea that he's dragging this Monchengladbach team along is doing a disservice to his team-mates, they're very well set up. Yes, he gives them that extra dimension but his team-mates do give him a platform to build from.

He must be one of the most two-footed players in the top leagues, though. Players like Nani or Ronaldo can strike from range with their weaker foot very well, or players like Ribery can carry the ball with either foot very well, but I've seen very few that can utilise all facets of their game with either foot as comfortably as Reus when I've seen him.

Him and Goetze are one of the most exciting prospects in midfield out there. A shame we won't get them.

If he was British he'd already be a lock for Player of the Year and worth 35 mil.

I'd think the only way to lure him away would be with a promise of a starting role. If Bayern are keeping Ribery and Robben and buying Goetze, as well as having Kroos, they may not give Reus as many games as someone else could offer him. Mueller would also be hard to unseat, if he wants to play centrally.

Hell, they may not even go for him, with that line-up.

I see all loan moves as beneficial. The footballing side of them is only half of it.... That fact he isnt getting alot of playing time aside, there is so much more involved in the background.

Life experience is just as important as regular football at that age. Obviously its about getting the right balance though.

People are dismissive far to quickly imo

Back from a broken toe, has the assist for Gladbach's goal, up 1-0.

[Edit: And now he's off injured again. Knee buckled and bowed out unnaturally, but not that much, I'd guess a strained tcl, tibial collateral ligament, the one on the outside of the knee. 2 weeks.]

Reus had a buy-out clause in his contract - that would allow him to leave for 17,5m Euros this summer.

Joins Dortmund in the summer which surely means Goetze's off now.
