Never been on the 'buy him fergie' bandwagon, and it's very unlikely that I ever will be. And I've also always thought he was overrated, which you can verify by my previous posts ITT.
I just think it's a good thing that Unitedfans who barely watched him (other than highlights, in which anyone can look worldclass), now see first hand, that he lacks certain qualities.
Of course when someone points it out in here, you're shot down, because half the people in here can't get stop wanking over worldclass, flawless Neuer.
Everyone kept wanking over him after the first leg, but now that he makes mistakes, everyone should just shut up?
He has a habit of making a few mistakes every now and then though doesn't he?

Most keepers do. We're blessed to have Van Der Sar because he makes less mistakes than pretty much any other keeper in world football.
Whoever we get, however good they are, they will make mistakes, for a while anyway.

I'm sure that has been a decisive factor in whether our scouts think he's good enough.
Neuer is generally a great keeper but of course at times he has a dip in form or makes a mistake. As great as vdS is, there were periods when even he would have the occassional blunder.
My point is still that for the life of mine I cannot understand how people judge players based on two or three club games, for the better (Fergie, I saw one game with him and he was great, buy him!) and for the worse (Fergie, I saw one game with him and he was sooo atrocious, he's a really bad keeper, don't buy him!).

Not quite sure what your banging on here about, Neuer has been hailed as a superstar in the making since he was 18 at shalke. Hes grown and grown, still not reach his prime and has fantastic qualities that have been reconized worldwide. His game against us in the first leg was hailed by our manager as "the best hes seen against United"
This Schalke team is in so much disarray its not even funny. Midtable after splashing alot of cash on players like Raul, Huntelaar, Papadopoulous etc and have gone through a manager change midseason, heck between the quarter and semi finals of the Champions league. Add to that Neuer's own personal situation with him choosing to leave his boyhood club its no wonder his form has dipped. Every keeper has flaws but Neuers consistency in the face of alot adversary, personal and business the like has been impressive.
Of course on here the wanking and slamming is OTT but there are alot of sensible posters here that remain balanced and those people have mostly been in this thread from the beginning. The reason you get flak is for obnoxious posts like "/thread"

Oh and I thought he, like Schalke were mediocre today. Pulled some good saves with some poor errors. His mind isnt in the right place and the way Schalkes season has gone I think few could blame him.

Today was not a good day at the races for him sonny. He is much better than that and we used a tactic of trying to shield him from handling crosses, which drew his ire.
It would be interesting to see how he looks like behind a proper defence. Schalke doesn't have one. We tore it apart last week, Bayern put four past them this week, we scored another four. He looks great making the saves (but still was at fault for goals in the last two games), but you wonder how he'll look like playing the 'Edwin role'. Less saves, more box control, organizing, etc.
He's an excellent keeper, of course, but there are other talents around. He doesn't have to be the one. And he won't be.

He's an excellent young keeper but does have weaknesses. If you look at the majority of our goals against him they were either slotted underneath him or close to his feet. He is brilliant at making diving saves or reflex saves but because he is so big he finds it difficult when trying to save with his hands low close to his feet or legs. A good example would be Andersons first goal where he actually stretched too far and the ball went under his arm. If the shot had been further away from him he would have saved it easily.
This is a good post highlighting his weaknesses based on tonight.
Last week I thought he had a very good game but generally the praise was OTT - most saves then were what you'd expect from a half decent keeper, and an international one to boot. Even tonight the ones he saved were within his comfort zone - waist high up. Down low he looks very average ... that's not something he'll be able to improve on ... because of his build.
I'll say it again but the keeper with the least mistakes in the EPL over the last few years is Craig Gordon. Great pity that he's suffered so many injuries (thanks to Keane rushing him back and that wee c@nt Defoe).
He's out of contract at Sunderland at the end of next season ... well worth a cheeky wee bid ... probably get him for $5mill, or potentially for free the next year.
West Brom @ Old Trafford this season, our Edwin made a howler.
It's the only one I can think of this season, I think both goals were his fault in that utterly weird game where we basically scored two goals for West Brom who didn't even try hard to get them. Weird stuff.

VDS had the same problems at Juventus. In fact he was called Van Papera (Van Duck).
Schmeichel had an inconsistent start to his Utd career so have Reina and a few others.

feck off it was. Gomes is in a class of his own. No one will ever come close to letting in the number of howlers he does.
To add to this point one thing that amazes me is the GK are always taught to save with their hands - this becomes very difficult when the ball is low down near your feet. Watch Casillas and the majority of Spanish GK and Barthez in his pomp and the number of saves they make with their feet.
Sometimes GK are too eager to dive to make a save when an oustretched leg though it may look ungainly is more effective.

Exactly. Neuer isnt the best keeper in the world, but he's up there and he's younger than those that are better than him. Bayern arent buying the finished article, but he's not that far away.
De Gea will most likely take a lot longer before he is consistant in avoiding bad days. He's less experienced and he's not as good. And he has made plenty of mistakes this season, he just hasnt made them against us and his youtube videos tend to show his great saves and not his howlers, so people who think they know something think he's amazing when they've barely seen him. He's outstanding for his age and he'll get to the top eventually, but Neuer is miles ahead for the moment.

There's no plot really. Neuer is off to Bayern, the only question is whether Schalke will blink first or whether Bayern will pay up. I suspect if he doesn't get his move to Bayern this summer he'll just sit tight and go on a Bosman the following year.
