Manchester United Women - Silly Season 2023/24 - Ins and outs

*

Well, a couple of years ago Russo had just had a major injury and had returned back from that injury. United had her under contract and probably did not want to commit to paying her Miedema or Kerr money since she at that time had not done much in the WSL or the main england squad. The Euros skyrocketed her value obviously and as United are the only top 4 club running their womens team with a profit we did not immediately throw her a big fat contract before knowing she was a super star and by then it was already too late. I dont think it was as easy for the club as its being pointed out by many.

United were trying to grow slow and responsible, the Euros sped things up with players salaries going through the roof, with Arsenal and Chelsea already use to it with United being 5 years old and not ready yet as an org.

And yes, I can agree female players need to grab the money more than male players, but Russo was going be Uniteds best paid player and the darling of the club PR wise. If Russo was committed to being loyal to United all she had to was to sign in the end. I never got the impression from her comments she intent on staying.

Good points.

Regarding the bolded, surely that also makes it very understandable why Russo left.

I don't mean to be mean-spirited, but if Earps' does leave, I trust she will personally refund all those who have bought her shirt, after all the hoo-ha about it.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but what are people's thoughts on a starting XI? I am going for a highly unusual and improbable 4-2-4, or is it a 4-5-1? No idea really - just amusing myself.

Earps'

Riviera. Le Tissier. Turner. Blundell

Zelem. Ladd.

Toone. Miyazawa. Galton.

Geyse

Pretty much that. I don't think we'll play Toone on the wing, but personnel-wise that's the best we've got. Depending on the opponent as well. In matches we expect to have most of the ball, Miyazawa might replace Ladd and García or Parris coming on to RW.

I dont agree with the latter as Russo would have understood United are building something real special and just beat Arsenal in the table for the first time. Why not stay with the club in her heart and help us get to the next level which is not far away at all? Russo is making so much money from social media & other venues of commercial things that she is going to be alright even if United paid her less than Arsenal - although it was said we matched Arsenals offer at the end.

In London Russo could of course make even more money from outside football deals & happenings and get very rich quickly.

Guess she didn’t have the patience to grow with United. Arsenal are more established and reaches the latter stages of UWCL more or less every year. Despite our growth there’s still a good chance we’re not even getting to the group stage.

That along with earning more. But yeah it hurts me too, don’t get me wrong.

It's interesting the contrast between the men's and women's game. Pogba for instance wanted to leave the club and did much of that process through his intermediary his agent. Got to leave and still had the decency to move abroad at the very least.

First team members of the woman's team are leaving joining rivals and very little is said on the issue. Could be that the men's is more renowned but could just imagine the discontent if someone like Rashford or Bruno decided to go Liverpool or City

Agreed. Its hurts alot. Because part of the reason I loved the womens team so much was that we had a tight knit group that come from the 2nd division and made it to one penalty decision at Chelsea from winning the league and we also could have won the FA cup the same season. And now the leading players in that group are leaving when we just have made it to the top pretty much. Its very depressing. Imagine keeping Russo & Earps and adding what we added. And then add Kerolin in january, we would have looked great.

We can replace them with new stars, but it will never be the same in terms of team spirit and chemistry with fans etc. Say what you will about Russo, she was very good and loved by the fans!

The fans of the women's game are mainly families so maybe more polite, that might change.

RvP, Sánchez, Silvestre, Welbeck, Mkhitaryan, Mata, Mount… plenty of male players have moved between United and Arsenal as well as United and Chelsea.

Yeap, hard to disagree with any of that.

So Arsenal has sold 40 000 tickets to their first game already, if they are getting into UCL and keep on getting those crowds United will be left in the dust, sad but true and they beat us to the UCL spot with 1 point 2 years ago, what a difference that would have made, imagined no UCL and no sold out games at the emirates for Arsenal last season and instead United playing those game on Old Trafford. Its a tough race!

At the Emirates? We either need a stadium built at OT or Carrington for the women or they need more games at OT. United should be at the forefront of women's football not lagging behind.

Don't know if it's about letting success go to her head. She is the best goalkeeper in the game and she understandably wants to spend the last years of her career playing UWCL football. Far from a given at United whereas probably any top club in the world would be willing to sign her and offer that. Along with wages matching the player's standard. Something which we haven't done, compared to what our domestic and European rivals have.

Kind of playing the devil's advocate here. Like I said I do understand the motivation to earn more when it comes to female players. At the same time there is a way to handle these things and what we're currently hearing doesn't sound good at all.
Oh she's definitely earned the money, I was directing it more towards the "prima donna" accusation. I think if she's fallen out with us, there's probably a good reason behind it.

I agree with the Parris/Ladd switch for certain games. As I said, I am just amusing myself, but picking a Second XI really highlights where we need to strengthen (this is based on Ladd being in the First XI)

Baggers

Rabjohn. Mannion. Evans

Naalsund. Bøe Risa. Watson

Thomas Williams. Garcia. Parris

Indeed. A versatile full-back and a competent striker and we’re well set for the season. Based on last season we’re more likely to use CBs as FBs when needed (don’t like this). I’m sure Toone and Parris can stunt as false nine so the striker is not that important. But that means we really need Geyse to stay fit.

Personally think it's only one of them. The news or Earps wanting to leave came out recently and most likely the club has a few options.
I doubt that the club will allow Earps to leave - even if the media rumours have some truth in them. As with Russo (£300k bid in Jan?) the "world record fee" for a keeper is around £100k. The club needs to grow a set and stand its ground.

I hope so. I don’t care about the £100k and it’s not guaranteed that the club would invest that in the women’s team anyway.

Arsenal tested our resolve with Russo in January and we rightly stood strong. The only difference here is that Earps doesn’t even have that little bind to the club compared to Russo (yes the bond is long gone by now), so she could formally ask to leave. If not, she’s staying for the season and leave for free next summer.

True, she could ask to leave, but she is under contract and the club can say no. That"s how it works, I believe. If she goes on strike, fair enough - take the hit rather than strengthening our rivals.

Anyway, this is media speculation. She's still a Red!

@jojojo Please give us some sanity here! I think most people are pretty upset and gutted right now. Do United have a plan at all? Has Earps taken us by surprise with allegedly wanting to leave? Are we just scrambling around with bids on players all of the place in pure chaos? We need your calm and logical approach! So if you think United does not have a plan at least fool to believe they have

Perhaps it was already mentioned here earlier but it seems Earps did not even travel to Germany even though she was listed in the traveling squad. Or if she did she's training individually apart from the rest of the team. Think I saw that mentioned in the tweets though. Still not a good look. She's gone.

She’s been at the club for 4 years now and she’s been nothing but a professional. I really hope it’s just speculation. But if she indeed wants to go because she wants to win things and she has a good offer waiting for her then the club has a decision to make.
She’s perhaps the best keeper in world right now and she’s 30, she wants to win titles so I don’t think she will back down easily if the reports are true. I really hope I’m wrong.

United finished 2nd in the league and lost it because the ref botched two clear penalties Chelsea away. We also dominated Chelsea in the FA cup final and did not deserve to lose. How about winning things by be loyal to the club who made her career and win things here?

To be fair that doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. The fact still remains that they won the double whereas we are still chasing our first trophy. She naturally has a better chance of winning those at Chelsea.

Do we even want a goalkeeper who does not want to be here and wants to leave ASAP? I mean, is that not a distraction for the team? You know the media will write about it all season long. She is a good keeper, but not sure she is worth that! I honestly think I would prefer is she renovated The Cliff! If we sell her the Glazers could pocket the money or invest in the mens team!

No we don't. But at the same time if we cave in it creates a precedent that we can be bullied into selling our best players. And as it stands it seems she doesn't even want to train with the rest of the team so I don't see how we could play her. I'm afraid there's only one way this will end. She'll force a move and we'll sell.

Let's wait and see. Nothing we say on here will affect things in the slightest. As with Russo and Battle, if Earps' decides to leave it will be to a club that values its women's team more than we do. It's all very well that the club suits insist on every player forcing the word "family" into every interview, but I find such corporate nonsense sickening.

Earps finished 2nd in the league, 2nd in the FA Cup, got into the FIFA World XI, finished 2nd in the World Cup, won the Golden Glove, saved a penalty in the World Cup Final. Like Russo, maybe she thinks that the club is content with second, that the noises and actions behind the scenes lack real ambition.

I can understand Battle wanting to go back to Barca, but for Russo and Earps wanting to leave United tells me that there is something seriously wrong.

Just on a side note, but it supports my general point. I tried to get a ticket for the Villa away game (1st Oct) and the club website said they are not dealing with tickets so contact Villa. I did, and they were more than happy to sell me a ticket (£12) but I said I would prefer to be in the United section. Eventually I was told that they had sent an allocation to United. Nothing on the United website and the ticket office is a nightmare to get through to. I did eventually get one from Villa though. Grumble over.

To me it seems very unlikely that United would sell such a big player in the last week of the window having already lost Russo & Ona. That will be just too much upheaval and I can see us having a tough time in the first few months. My feeling is that we will stay firm and let her leave either in January or next summer

You say that but then you go on to discuss the matter ;) Plus based on that the whole forum might as well be shut down.

Yeah, I agree that it's unlikely we will sell considering how we handled the Russo situation. I'd try and get a top replacement in right now though if it's an option.

I don't think it's a surprise that she wants to leave, certainly I don't think it's a surprise to the club or her teammates - it's been rumoured for months. Some of that may be because of the club - negotiations starting late etc.

Some because of where the team is now - you could make a decent team at the WWC out of players we've either lost (Batlle, Russo, Groenen, James and even Alex Greenwood) and ones who we've owned but who never got many games. Mary doesn't have that many years left to "win things" and if she's got any doubts any doubts about club, manager or team then she might be feeling impatient.

The contract factor will be a huge thing - this is her chance to get a top salary and a good long duration contract. She's hot right now and she needs to make it count.

For United - we need someone in before we let her leave. Someone top class who can look like she belongs in the team. I think United have been looking for a replacement so I'm assuming we're actively pursuing them now. If no one arrives, I think Earps will come back in as #1 and she'll handle the disappointment.
