Manchester United vs Wrexham (Wed 26th July, 03:30 UK time)

Even then, Hansen, Mejbri, Fernandez, Fish, Jurado, Shoretire and Hugil should be Championship quality at a minimum if they are ever going to make it here. I didn't see it either (for obvious time reasons), but we had 1 shot on target - and that first half line up should have beat them comfortably. We conceded 2 goals in the first half with young players who are trying to prove they can hold a place in the Premier League.

Only Mejbri and Fernandez proved they are championship quality. A player like Hugill flopped at the level Wrexham were playing in last season and Shoretire hardly impressed with Bolton in League 1.

Just watched the 20 minute highlights on MUTV. Wanted to see the challenge on Mullin more than anything else. Of course, they cut it out completely  Didn’t happen.

There's a video of it further down the homepage.

It's not just press releases from months ago, though. Fair enough, I don't know if it's been (wrongly) portrayed and advertised in the US, but in the UK it's regularly been stated that the Wrexham game will be for a youthful squad, and that the first team games on the US tour will be the ones against Arsenal, Madrid and Dortmund.

And is that really that surprising? Man United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund... Wrexham. Any time United play a friendly against a 4th, last season non-league, tier team it'll almost certainly be a youthful team and not their international stars. Fair enough, sometimes it'll be described as a Man United XI, to establish it'll not be the first team. But I doubt that wording would have cleared anything up for the US fans.

There was no attempt to cover anything up at this end (in the UK). The fact it'll be a youthful team was regularly acknowledged from March onwards - not just in March and then hushed up. If that wasn't made clear in the US, then the issue is with the US marketing of the game not the club being secretive about it in any way as they've made it very clear from the start what kind of team they'd be selecting.

I hope I've misunderstood you here, but if this is a reference to US fans not being knowledgeable, I will counter that a US fan interested enough to watch a preseason game on a Tuesday night knows the difference between the first team and the reserves.

Who cares what that loser is saying.

1. Club made it clear back when the fixture was announced.

2. This is the official poster. A bit of common sense and anyone would understand that they wouldn't be using a bunch of no names in their advertising if there wasn't a good reason behind it.

3. Why on earth would United's main players face fecking Wrexham in the States? They were a Conference team when the fixture was announced ffs. What purpose would it serve? What answers would the manager get? We barely ever face teams this shite in the 3rd round of the FA cup. Again, you can't go wrong with an ounce of common sense.

Considering the absolute fanfare this match was announced with, its very easy to forgive people for not making doubly sure that there would be more than 0 first team players present for a friendly with an absolute ton of PR behind it.

The only thing that team had in common with what people generally consider to be Manchester United is the club emblem.

The ticket pricing was reflecting Manchester United in attendance, not Manchester United Youth Squad.

I mean, they have to run the pre-season as best they can, but it feels a bit lackluster and bordering on dishonest to wheel out Sir Alex to take part in the promo video for this thing if there was going to be 0 first team regulars present. What was even the point of this match.

Didn't mean it to be a dig, no. I just meant 'Man United XI' might not be a term US fans knew was used to indicate mostly young or reserve players when used in the context of a friendly game over here. Obviously I know that US fans are fully aware of the difference between the first team and the reserves.

180 quid is mental. I would certainly be a bit pissed had I dropped that to watch our kids lose to Ryan Reynolds' merry men.

So many people are spamming how they were scammed, come on, Man United literally specified which team will play against Wrexham back in March, if people would inform themselves better they would not feel scammed. They only have themselves to blame.

How would just casual United fans in US get informed on this, and probably expected to have a thought of searching United news release about this game back in March? Just be reasonable.

Edit: but then you're probably smarter than some of us to have thought about all this before.

It’s pretty terrible. What was he thinking? The ball was outside the box so he couldn’t punch it even if he got there first. Definite red card.

What did their manager say?
I expected to see a flying kick from what I read about it, tbh. He's late, the ball gets nicked past him and their bodies come together.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...riker-Paul-Mullins-lung-pre-season-clash.html

‘I’m fuming about it, I’ve got to be honest with you,’ said Parkinson. ‘It was a clumsy, reckless challenge in a pre-season game and I’m not happy with it at all.

‘We just got a call from the hospital to say there’s a small puncture in his lung. It’ll probably be tomorrow morning before we get the specialist to have a look at it.

‘I haven’t seen the goalie and he’s probably best steering clear of us for the time being because we’re not very happy.

‘It should have been a straight red. If it’s not denying a goal scoring opportunity it’s still a dangerous challenge, so if you add the two scenarios together he should have been off the pitch. It’s a dangerous challenge and obviously Paul Mullin is our talisman.’

United are said to be unhappy with Parkinson for inflaming the situation with his comments and driving social media abuse towards their young player who was already dealing with a difficult situation.

Said he's fuming, Mullin got a punctured lung and that Bishop should steer clear of Wrexham for the time being ... Bit over the top

Talked about how he should probably stay away from Wrexham for now....absolutely insane comment about a young kid who made a mistake. Never liked that manager.

But no sympathy for people who, through ignorance or laziness, didn't know that United had made it very clear from the start that they would be sending a youthful squad for the game.

I just think this is such petty Points of View bullshit tbf. Very British though, admittedly. Why wouldn’t you feel sympathy with fellow fans over a club run by vulture capitalists trying to squeeze 2 games into 2 days? Why wouldn’t you initially expect some first team players from watching an advert with Sir Alex? Or maybe they were maybe persuaded by their kids and didn’t want to disappoint? There all sorts of reasons. We were in America already and the Madrid game wasn’t announced. It’s not like were booked to play in Sweden in the middle of a Middle Eastern tour.

This kind of “well they didn’t read the small print, so feck ‘em, I side with the institution” attitude is just unfathomably weird to me. It’s odd to see it as the go-to instinct of many is all. We’re a country of snide Little England grasses who want everyone else to have a shit time.

Yep quite clearly some of you just want to shit on the club and won't hear the facts.

Oh no the poor club! *clutches pearls*

If they're United fans, then by reading the many references to it on the official site when discussing the US Tour?

You keep acting like the reference to March is 'it was mentioned once in March. The point actually is that it's been mentioned many times since March - the first just being in March when the games were announced and the tickets went on sale. But in all the recent comments about the upcoming US Tour it was still always stated that the Wrexham game would be a youth side.

I guess the big problem, going off your post, is that 'casual' fans or neutrals might not bother doing much reading of the official site, club news and articles, team news, etc. But, then, it's that lack of interest / effort that's led to them not seeing information that was being put out there, rather than the club 'tricking' them or whatever.

The price is too high for a youthful Man United selection, yeah. But people buying tickets had every opportunity to know it was going to be a youthful Man United team they were paying that price to see.

So basically and on field collision has resulted in the manager saying our player will suffer off field retribution

Because it wasn't "small print". It was made quite clear in all the articles I've read about the game since the announcement of it (March) up to the day of the match, that it would be a youthful team. No tricks or small print about it. Just openly and regularly stated and out there for anyone interested enough to see.

You're trying to make it into a 'big institution v the little guy' situation. It isn't. Not the bit about it being a youthful side, anyway. That bit was made quite clear from the start. The part of my post you carefully edited out said that I have sympathy for the prices - that it should have been cheaper for a youthful side. So, yeah, I'm agreeing about the price. But not about the suggestion the club tricked / misled fans into believing it was going to be a first team selection. They didn't. They always made it clear from March and throughout that it was going to be a youthful team so that's the point that I have little sympathy for those claiming otherwise.

Looked to me like Mullin was going in hard on Bishop and came off worse.

Their manager needs to apologize to United as well. This is a reason you don't play first team players against sides like Wrexham.

It was a weird game to schedule in the first place but I'd imagine that will be the last of it.

Mullin was shit talking Antony before the game in an interview clip I saw. And as a lower league team they were always going to go in hard, the only difference from last night to the Chelsea game was they were playing against kids rather than experienced players.

Anyway, I'm sure Disney+ got their footage.

Yeah. Though the tackle has no place in a pre season friendly, was reckless and dangerous and the guy punctured his lung due to the strength of the collision. We'd be beyond fuming if their keeper did that to Rashford and that keeper would be getting death threats from all over probably. So bishop is pretty lucky that he's a United goalkeeper and Wrexham is a tiny team and it's not reversed so I'm not feeling much sympathy for him here.

His comments made headlines in the Sun. Seems like everything Wrexham-related is big news these days.

Mainoo and Greenwood are the only talents our youth setup has produced in the last decade who are good enough if we're being honest. Our youth facilities need to be upgraded.

.......Rashford.....Garnacho.....Henderson.......

I can't help but feel this game was always going to be a bad idea. A bunch of league 2 sloggers against a group of kids trying to represent the Manchester United shirt. Even though it's a friendly, Wrexham were always going to be up for a it and our lads were always going to feel the pressure to not be humiliated by losing. Not to excuse it, but it's no wonder Bishop didn't feel like he could pull out of that challenge.

I can understand that in many ways it was seen as a good test for the kids, but it just feels like they were asking for trouble.

Not the guy who has over 100 goals for the club? Fair for Pogba and Garnacho not to be included as they joined at 16, but United still do that transition in and later stage development.

Januzaj was hugely talented as well though, his failure was not due to the youth setup or lack of talent. Too soon to put Mainoo in there anyway, but I suspect he'll make it

I think you'll find that very few big clubs bring through as many players into the first team, especially to a key player point as we do. Others might have them and sell them off before they do much in the first team. Chelsea have what, Reece James and Mason Mount? Some others that didn't develop much until after they left? Sancho joined City at pretty much the same point Pogba and Garnacho joined United. Same with Sterling at Liverpool. So those clubs have Foden and Trent.... That's it?

It doesn’t look like a great idea in hindsight. It’s not as though this bunch of reserves/U21 are particularly strong right now. They played this game on the back of a very poor season. Surely one of the least impressive bunch we’ve had at this age group in quite a while? Maybe it’s good for their development to cop a hiding from fully grown men in front of a big crowd?

Focusing on the game itself, I thought the kids did alright, especially given they were down to 10. They played the ball about well. But the goals really highlighted the mismatch in power and strength.

Not really. It showed how poor their defence was. The goals were all unchallenged --- all caught ball-watching. Poor organisation. Once is one thing...

haha...the comments in here during the match and after wards are so typical caf...ffs everyone knew it was going to be a bunch of youth players in the match as it was clearly indicate well in advance but then people taking the piss out of them for their performance against a seasoned group of players

as for the parkinson comments...i don't really think he's that much out of order. No one wants to see a player come off injured especially your talisman in a friendly match. I certainly don't think Bishop tried to injure him but you have to remember it's a friendly match and he should have clearly had that in mind when coming out not to make that heavy of contact.

say this though...might be a blessing in disguise for Parkinson b/c Mullin could be out for up to 6 weeks which means they will probably have to go into the market and find another goal scorer.

Seeing what's been posted here you could probably have found out we were playing kids. But who does that? Who searches for CFOs statements when buying tickets?

The game was advertised as Manchester United vs Wrexham. It should've been advertised as Manchester United Academy vs Wrexham. It's tricky advertising to say the least.

Sure from a legal point of view they can surely defend themselves but I'm sure they weren't bothered to properly inform the fans. Just do the bare minimum to not be in trouble and let the fans take the blame for "not doing enough research". I'm certain if advertised as what it truly was, an academy match, it would had been a disaster not even 25% would've attended.

When Madrid game was announced I thought we were playing squad players not the kids, before that I had no idea. As I said I about to fly to San Diego to see them without knowing this was an academy match, lucky I couldn't made it at the end and I'm a fan interested enough on the team to be on a forum and spend time talking about the team.

Once a few players go on loan our U21s are going to be worse than last season
