Manchester United vs Olympique Lyonnais (Wed 19th July, 14:00 UK time)

Kovar - Tidy with his feet, able to distribute with both.
AWB - Looks fit, a bit more attacking than usual
Varane - Cool as a cucumber
Martinez - One man press resisting machine
Fernandes - Lucky to not give a penalty away, but looks good
Hannibal - Brilliant but the fellas a mad man
Casemiro - Doing fine, composed.
Mainoo - plays like a 27 year old
Sancho - Scared
Mount - Tidy
Antony - Antony

Never seen Amad and Casemiro in the same place at the same time. Must be that they're the same person!

Be interesting to see how young Evans does in the second half. Could have a bright future ahead of him, but he'll probably end up spending most of his career at shite clubs like West Brom and Leicester.

This is seriously worrying football. Are we sleepwalking into a relegation dogfight?

Why would you lie about watching the match?

Suppose at this stage it's just about the fitness. When everyone is available we won't be starting any pre season games with anyone wildly out of positionl (unless they have no future and are just filling a hole e.g. Telles at LCB last pre season).
It's the same story every preseason. Even during Fergie days, people were so bothered when we lost a game in preseason. Some people don't change. Just move on.

Why do all these specialist free kick takers turn to shit when they join us ?

Because when they play for other clubs you only catch the highlights of their best attempts, and don't see every single free kick or corner that they take.

You think Ward-Prowse puts them all top bins?

You'd think we're playing a League One side the way some carry on. This is Lyon. They're a proper football club and this is a very experimental side with young players.

Bare minimum two CFs and one DM this window otherwise its going to be a struggle all season.

Kovar - Ponderous, but in his defence, no long option. Some nice bits of composure and distribution however.

AWB - Couple good touches, couple bad passes.

Varane - Good defensively, crap in build up.

Martinez - Lovely.

Fernandez - Too slow and weak right now. Lucky to not give away a pen.

Mainoo - Does one great thing then one crap thing. Which is expected at his age and the amount of proper football he has played this year (not much) Interesting that he is moving around positionally in the build up phase from all the CB positions from the pivot.

Mejbri - Fantastic weight of pass, one loose one that lead to a chance for Lyon in a dangerous area.

Mount - Looked ok, the.lack of a.target and threat in behind closes the spaces where he is most effective. Needed better movement for a Sancho pull back.

Anthony - First 45 back after a layoff so no qualms, looked quick and a bit stronger.

Sancho - Touch was better and did well holding up play, doing the best he can in an unfamiliar role.

Amad - Not seeing it, attacks have slowed down when the ball has reached him, should have put a very good chance away.

I kinda wish ETH had played Hugill up front instead of either Sancho or Antony. I get it that he doesn't view Hugill as a potential option but the team just can't function properly without someone in the box.
I think just having Hugill there as a placeholder would have been more useful than whatever it is we were doing in that first half, as it would allow ETH to see how the rest of the team performs when we have someone who is actually a striker in that position, even if we can and should get someone in who is better before the season starts. At the moment, this is just a completely pointless thought experiment ie what would a team look like if they didn’t have anyone up front at all

Feel that way too.. Seems to have the Mata problem.. clearly very talented.. not sure where he fits in.

I don't even see the potential as of now. He's just a bog standard mid table winger with a huge price tag
Yup if he was bought for £17m there wouldn't be this misplaced hope that he'll be top class.

He doesn't strike me as a player struggling to come into his own, this is just what he is. An average winger with the ability to hit the odd curler into the top corner.

Was more involved than Antony though imo.

He was heavily involved, but unfortunately most of his involvements have been poor - particularly his final ball has been delivered too slowly, making potentially easy chances more difficult.

This is seriously worrying football. Are we sleepwalking into a relegation dogfight?

Looking like it, dreadful football, no pash'un, no life in these lads, strolling through games as though they'd rather be anywhere else. It's absolutely shocking stuff, 2 games into preseason and the signs are already there, worrying times ahead.

It's funny how people judge performances from established first team players differently to young players.

I'd say there is very little between any of amad, Sancho and Antony. All 3 have done good things, had bad finishes, made some bad final 3rd decisions while also having some very good touches. If anything, I'd say Sancho was the best of the 3. There's just no way that Antony and Sancho were "bad" while Amad was "standout". They literally did the exact same half

Disagree alot with this. Amad has had a lot of part of our play with Mount and Hannibal. His passing has been good and apart from his finishing it has been good.
Antony and Sancho have constantly been the stop to our attacks with poor touches and bad decisions.

Its pre season and both are playing out of position so not much you can truly judge from this match, but fair is fair those two have been a level below the rest.

They are around the same but for some reason the caf places a huge importance on body language. Antony looks more enthusiastic so his wayward passes are overlooked. Same way they used to overrate Herrera like crazy while conveniently forgetting his injuries.

Bizarre really. Same sort of overreaction to positive performances of players and individuals too. Not sure who it will be this time but there will no doubt be a youngster who impresses, gets hyped and unsurprisingly ETH rarely uses them.

At best, we'll have a clearer indication of how we will line up and way ETH wishes to play but translating it into the PL.

I learned the hard way of getting excited for LVG football based on preseason football. Equally the negative stuff shouldn't be overblown.

We did well overall, just missing that finishing touch.

That lack of no.9 is glaring though. It means that we can't cross or play the ball to feet knowing the ball will be held up. Frustrating again.

I know we're missing 1 or 2 players but those alone won't make up for the lack of quality. It's a long season ahead and we could end up like last year's Chelsea if we aren't careful.

There’s not a whole lot to analyze in a second pre-season match. New and young players are getting experience and returning players a good workout.

For the moaners, it may be a good idea to hold off on moaning for a few more weeks.

Ya I pretty much agree. I can see from ETH's perspective he probably wants the players we're relying on to build fitness as fast as possible. Hopefully we can sign Hojlund quickly to sort the tactical shape out in the coming games.

Amad has lost it just as much as Antony and Sancho, perhaps even more so.

They can all do better, but it's only pre-season. No need for the agendas at this point.

If we finish top half, it will be a miracle. Sack the manager now before it's too late to get someone else in.

Not really a pointless thought experiment considering the first team currently has 1 centre forward and he's always injured. Seems like a pretty good idea to figure out who would work best as a false 9, doesn't it?

No agendas. Just calling what I see. Like I said its pre season and Antony and Sancho are playing out of position so not much to really take away from this performance.

Oh shit, Donny still exists.

Our best approach/attribute is still a fast counter attack. Long way to an effective possession playing team.
Not having our number one and two creators, our number one goals scorer, and any recognizable striker is a pretty good recipe for looking ineffective breaking down a team. Wouldn't really read much into this other than the fact that the striker position obviously is a gaping hole at the moment.
