Manchester United vs Liverpool (Sun 4th August, 00:30 UK time)

We need to stop doing the US tours, don’t think it helps pre-season at all. About time we prioritised it.
I agree. Sod the American market and play some friendlies closer to home and get a good pre season under your belt.

From the March report sounds like it was business as usual as they were clinical and we made stupid errors.

That aside, what was our build up play like and how did Liverpool play? Is Slots possession game already evident? If so it’s pretty depressing given our manager has been there for two years and we are yet to see a style of play
Wasn't impressed by Liverpool, strange seeing them play this way and for me, it just looked like a version of EtH, just with better players on the pitch.

Our performances have actually been better this tour. We haven’t got the results but that’s football. We beat Liverpool 4-0 in pre season a couple of years ago but that didn’t mean anything either. We dominated Arsenal first half, had the better and more chances against Liverpool.

That's an issue, because a midfield signing seems like a last priority thing.

On ETH's first season, we signed Eriksen on free and Casemiro late in the window because we wasted time on De Jong.
Second season, we got Mount who is more an attacking midfielder, and Amrabat, loaned late in the window again.
This transfer window we've spent about 100 millions albeit on installments, on no midfielder.

Result in preseason doesn't matter much, but performance does. The idea that you need to have all your back four to be world class to make a high line work is baffling.

The midfield market isn't exactly teeming with talent. And it looks like we are targeting two players. Ugarte and another better ball player will be good. And hopefully the midfield market improves next season.

No idea what you're on about with the high line. I'd love to see anyone make a high line work with AWB Evans Lindelof and Amass

The ling goodbye.
ETH said himself we needed to win every game pre season he's come away with two wins and nothing to suggest he's developed the team anymore.

Gone early on in the season other teams aren't waiting for us to catch up. They are moving forward. We stagnate under this manager.

Us losing in preseason is far better for us than steamrolling everyone, given we have a few outstanding transfers to be done.

It’s clear we need to bring in another centre half to cover injuries, and urgently need a top class DM. I’m surprised Casemiro is still here.
He wouldn’t be if we could sell him. The issue with our players is theyre not desperate to go. They are happy with their contracts at one of the biggest clubs in the world. No one is biting our hand off for these players and their wages. It’s difficult and is going to take time to get rid of them all. Probably a case of them leaving on free transfers etc.

Because he's not naive as fans with throwaway comments that pre-season has no impact on the seasons infancy.

United don't have a coach with enough pedigree or a team with enough panache to just turn up when the season begins with the blow of a whistle.

This team will need to build momentum in order to have some semblance of being consistent.

It would be a shock to not see poor results in the opening 10 fixtures, there's some testing games in there already to determine if anything has changed.

We will truly see if the performances last season were more reflective of injury as opposed to tactical competence.

Pre-season positives - Colyer, Mount, Amad, Rashford.
Negatives - injuries, Sancho, Casemiro.

had no idea we were playing liverpool and i’ve seen none of the match, just the scoreline, but i’m absolutely appalled with ten hag.

ETH didn’t have the Mainoo he does now. Things change.
We need to be careful regarding rhe expectations of Mainoo. He isn't good enough to turn our team around, I don't think there is a single player in world football who could do that.

He is a v good young talent, and we welcome that. But he is still learning, even last season he had a few games when he wasn't as influential. He's v v young and what we really need is someone, a few players really, to really guide him, provide that outstanding example. Not sure we have that, and that's a worry.

The score line flattered Liverpool. United had plenty of chances to score. Poor finishing was the difference between the teams.

Pretty difficult to do that when the Glazer lot still own a major % of the club, the money side as well and if they want to see their plaything in America they will.$$$$$$$$ is all that matters to those leaches.

Can't see them doing much of anything this season tbh.

Wasn’t for us, missed soooo many chances.
I was at Wembley when we beat Southampton in the league Cup Zlatan and to a lesser extent Cavani were both class and even in their mid 30’s far superior to what we’ve had in the last two years.

We just don’t have an experienced CF who is a goal glut, we don’t have the correct competition and then on top of that we don’t have wide strikers or wing backs/fullbacks who create for that type of CFW.

If you don’t have the structure after 2 years for attacking football and a system on how to score goals at more than 1.5/1.6 per PL game you are never going to be a top 4 side consistently.

We need much more, Sancho if he stays will chip in with 4 or 5 assists and 4 or 5 goals then Moan when he’s not playing, we all know how that ends.

He needs to Go with Antony and F Pellistri this summer and we need to go buy a young emerging winger and an experienced striker like Ivan Toney. We then need to target all of attackers with goal and assist bonuses. I keep seeing Onana lose possession by kicking it long, who for? , Sancho, Hojlund, Amad, Rashford, they can’t judge the flight and head it on or control it on their chest like Ivan Toney could and then get the team up the pitch, sell Mctominay whose possible the best at that and you are just inviting turnovers and even more pressure.

Highlights of the tour;
T Collyer, Amad and a lesser extent Harry Amass who still poor defensively with his positioning but has huge potential.

Questions of the tour ;
ETH, Midfield Mobility, Mason Mount misses too many chances, for £60m he should be getting double digit Assists and goals
Casemiro and Eriksen are both finished at elite level and we need huge investment throughout the squad, but especially defence and midfield.

Right now this United squad will struggle to finish Top 6th but the real concern is how easy we are to beat, Last season ETH team played 52 Games in all competitions and we lost 19, or 38 PL games and lost 14 that’s a 37% loss rate in PL and all our games, let that sink in we lose nearly 4 games out of every 10 we play and guess what 5 pre season matches 2 wins 0 draws and 3 loses that’s 60% loss rate.

I genuinely believe ETH has 10-15 games in the PL and RVN is there for that very reason in that case the club sacks ETH, the club could have a caretaker that the fans might buy into for a season and he would do it because it wants the job full time. ETH needs to get the win rate back to 60-65% and the loss rate back to 15-20% otherwise he’s gone by December 1st.

Yeah exactly. This game actually looked the opposite of what we usually do which is the team pressing us high and us trying to counter. Was almost like a role reversal. The signs are there of a good press, good shape both defensively and offensively, we just need the players in and back from injury/rest. The transition to a high press will leave us vulnerable to counter attacks so I expect us to concede some goals where we are ripped apart in a counter, however, with better players than last night it should hopefully be reduced.

The moment I saw the starting lineups I expected a loss, and given that we actually outplayed them for big stretches of the game and missed good chances with essentially our B team, it’s nothing worth crying over.

pre-season meant sod all when we beat them 4-0.
It fecking did, I and thousands of others were damn sure we were going to win the double that season.

Maybe not.

I just look at these games as a money making exercise and a pre season work out for the players, what does worry me a bit is after reading the match report Utd did not appear to have any cohesion and style of play where as Liverpool with Slott only being there for two months had Liverpool playing as a well coordinated unit. I didn’t see the game I’m just going off what I read on the BBC web page.
Hopefully we will have a more of our first team available for the community shield which is a very important warm up as we look forward to the following Friday and Fulham.

The first story I've seen on the BBC this pre season about a friendly and of course it's our loss to Liverpool  like it actually means anything.

The vast majority of people here seemed to have forgotten those stats after the Cup win.

As they say, the league never lies.

Anything we’re involved in always gets shown. We was on the radio the next day after a loss to Rosenborg. Where as Liverpool losing to Preston doesn’t get any acknowledgment. It’s because it was slots first game etc

It's disingenuous to highlight statistics without factoring the role of injuries in their accumulation.

As much as it sucks to lose, having twice the shots of pool and generally showing signs of improving is what I want anyway out of a pre season. Our injuries have been shocking, but that's kind of par for the course for us. I imagine our season will be much improved on last year but we are still so far away - I think in the next 2-3 years while ineos imprint their own system on things we will start to see the giant machine that is Manchester United begin to work again.

Good managers have shown they don't need a new set of first 11 to play good football. EtH isn't one of them.
