Manchester United Vs Leeds United

Just been on WACCOE to have a gander.

Spurs' 9-1 is under threat in this one.
Wigan can't get out of their half, looks ominous for us!

Been watching them tonight to see what we can expect.

It does not look good.

They've been singing we all hate leeds scum non-stop for the last 10 minutes, the cnuts

Marching....What kind of strenght Leeds team will play? Have they been playing first choice players in the previous rounds?

Bromby and Gradel won't be included but apart from that it's a full strength squad Grayson's got and as he tends to go out to win every game I am expecting the strongest team available.

I am hoping for more of what was on show when we played a strong team v Liverpool in the League Cup....if our players (that's you BECKFORD!) aren't up for this game they never will be.

A Socialist City. Very good contemporary General forum reference Elvis. Nothing like playing Leeds for a bit of rivalry.

someone explain the hatred

I guess it's partly to do with the fact that their glory period under Don Revie came just after a period in which we won two titles and a European Cup in the space of three years. They resented us winning those trophies, and obviously Reds didn't enjoy their success that followed. I think the fact that we're a Lancs side and they're a Yorkshire one also didn't help the rivalry, as well as the fact that both us and them having quite well organised firms in the '70s led to some scuffles at fixtures between us. Previous encounters, such as the '65 FA Cup semi which was an extremely rough and ill-tempered game won't have endeared them to us much before that, too.

It's harder to explain than the United v. City rivalry or the ones with Liverpool or Everton nowadays, as to foreign United fans Leeds don't seem to be a rival of ours, but I doubt we could've hated them much more than when they pipped us to the title in '92, or when they came to OT with their Munich songs in full flow. There are probably other caftards who understand the rivalry better than I do, but that's a basic outline of it as best I know it.

Oh, and they're dirty Leeds. Can't fecking wait for sunday though, been too long since we've played them.

thanks for the explanation, being an african supporter the only rivalry we appreciate is arsenal since the premiership was broadcasted to us mid nineties and arse were the rivals at that time, so the fan base was divided between united and arsenal....liverpool+chelsea are irrelevant, shitty is understandable and leeds is a forgotten club.

Nah will be a stronger team than that listening to Sir Alex in his press conferance this morning he said there wouldnt be many changes at all from the starting line up last night and it will be a very strong team ...maybe Owen for Berbatov and probably Obertan for park but other than that id say same as last night.

Seriously, destroy them!

To be honest, I think Fergie will start Rooney. This isn't a game to lose and Rooney absolutely loves playing in a big game like this. They are a side playing like a Championship squad so this has the potential to be an upset if we aren't careful. Rooney will want to stand triumphant and go toe to toe with the bruisers on display. It's been ages since we've played them and with the history we have I can't fathom him not starting...

I'd play a traditional 4-4-2 with Rooney and Owen, Giggs and Park and Scholes and Anderson. Neville will want to play, Vidic and Brown plus maybe Raphael? PIG of course to finish it off.

I think that will be the team going by what Fergie has said today especially with the carling cup game against city coming up where the likes of Obertan/Gibson/Anderson/Owen/Welbeck/Rafael/Fabio/Foster etc will all probably start anyway...

Really? Now that does surprise me. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Any chance of Diouf on the bench i wonder?

I think Diouf is ineligible for this match, for whatever reason I don't know. Hopefully he'll be on the bench against Shitty next week.

Think its to do with the fact you cant actually register new players until the 1st of January which is a bank holiday and the 2nd is a Saturday so the registration wont go through until monday at the earliest

Well Evra is 100% not playing because he is on a 4 day break to Dubai with his family, i was talking to him at the airport today and he said Fergie is going to play a very strong side against both Leeds and City and he is only having a short break because he has played more than anyone else lately, however he says he will be playing against City , so looks like good news all round.

Nice one Robin, seems sensible - he'll probably be captain on Wednesday.

As for Leeds, Fabio will no doubt be left back, and I'd love to see Rafael on the other side - it will have the amateurs in their team confused :p, however I think Fergie will give Neville a game and save Rafael for City.

I can confirm this, my mum saw him too at the airport today.

Pig, Rooney, Berbatov, Giggs, Fletcher, Carrick, Vidic.

I think SAF will probably play the strongest eleven he could possibly put out with probably 1 or 2 youngsters getting the nod. He knows it's Leeds and it's been a long time coming.

I reckon Rooney will start - he came to us after Leeds were relegated so he's never had a taste of that particular rivalry from a playing perspective, and given that he's ostensibly going to be here for a long time, and at the heart of the club, I think SAF will want to give him a taster.

he may come on as a sub. Reason I doubt it is we have a semi-final match against the bitters and the Birmingham match next week.

Doubt SAF will want to burn out the lad.

Should be an interesting match. It is at 7.00am here in the US. Can't wait :)

They're showing it delayed by an hour and a half here - Setanta (who have the FA Cup rights) are showing a live SPL match that starts at the same time, and then the FA Cup game after that.

Which leaves me with the dilemma of do I stream, or do I just do an internet blackout for an hour and watch it on a normal telly.

I'm leaning towards the latter.

Quite possible, but it's not certain we'll face them again for a few years, so it's not like it's a fixture Rooney would be coming to feature in home and away in the League yet or anything. Personally think Owen will make some appearance as he's not played since Fulham, and will be incisive against a defence like Leeds, which is weaker than that of most Prem sides.

Considering the oppositions, I was thinking maybe two semi-strong teams for both games...

vs. Leeds
Foster
Rafael
DeLaet
Vidic
Fabio
Park
Carrick
Scholes
Obertan
Rooney
Owen

Bench Kuszczak, Brown, Evra, Fletcher, Gibson, Valencia/Tosic, Berbatov.

vs. Man City
Kuszczak
Fletcher
Brown
Neville
Evra
Valencia
Anderson
Gibson
Giggs/Nani
Berbatov
Welbeck

Bench: Foster, Fabio, J. Evans, Ferdinand, Carrick, Giggs/Nani/Tosic, Macheda

they don't look like it but it would be good to give rooney and valencia a game off against leeds although both are in great form

my team depending on fitness

Foster

Rafael - Brown - Vidic - Fabio

Welbeck - Anderson - Scholes - Obertan

Owen - Berbatov

subs - Amos, Neville, De Laet, Gibson, Nani, Park, Rooney

definitely will be a weaker side. Rooney won't start for sure. Fergie will have an eye on the Carling Cup fixture.

Foster

G Neville
Fabio
De Laet
Wes

Obertan
Gibson
Anderson
Tosic

Owen
Welbeck

with perhaps Park and Vidic coming in for Tosic and De Laet for the City match, otherwise giving the regular Carling Cup players a chance, after all they earned it through their efforts.

I want the likes of Rooney, Valencia, Evra, Fletcher to concentrate their efforts on the Premiership and the Champions League.
