Manchester United vs Inter Milan (Sat 20th July, 12:30 UK time)

Matic and Lingard are nowhere near as bad as you drama queens seem to think.

Of course not, the Caf hates lingard for whatever reasons and their opinions on Matic changed last year where he had some subpar games.

That seems to be our 1st choice XI then. Glad Martial is on the left so we can actually see how he works with Rashford. He's simply not a striker. Happy to see Axel starting alongside Lindelof. Probably suggests he is 2nd choice out of our current cbs. Matic starting instead of McTominay is frustrating. I expect most of the team will get 60 mins with maybe a couple coming off at 45 mins
Martial will start on the left. But I think our concept of right/left will be very different this season from what's been seen before at Old Trafford.

AWB and Shaw are two defensively excellent fullbacks. It'll be their job to shut down the flanks. The 'wingers' in front of them will be frequently interchanging and have relatively little defensive responsibilty.

So, unlike the Fergie days of fluid frontlines, Ole appears to be going down the route of giving his attackers almost complete freedom vertically as well as laterally.

I bet that by the end of the game, Martial and James will have spent roughly an equal amount of time on both sides of the pitch.

Hates Lingard for whatever reasons...Some of you are really clueless lot if you can’t look even at the eyes of the most basic statistics of his (assists and goals) to conclude it’s not hate related at all.

Ole will get Lingard to be the person pressing and running around rather than wasting Marcus or DJ's energies.

Why don't we just get a player who can do that whilst also adding quality

Think this pretty much our first choice xi next season. Maquire and Fernandes in for Axel and Lingaard.

Don't deserve to be starting a preseason friendly?

Jesus Christ, this forum sometimes...
Don't deserve to be in our strongest team. Which at this stage of the pre season will indicate they are.

No they shouldnt. They should get 45 minutes in the second team but they dont deserve to start at all since theyve played worse than those theyre competing with.

Let's just hope that its a meaningless pre-season lineup, because if that was our lineup for Chelsea or for the season, even I would lose faith in Ole. Reeks of favouring seniority over performance/form. No way Lingard gets in on merit, nor Matic. And Greenwood has outperformed Martial.
But beyond that individually, Matic Pogba is a lousy combination that will leave the defense exposed constantly, while Lingard as #10 poses no goal threat.

Rome wasnt built in a day. It will take a couple more transfer windows. We are trying to add what we need immediately this window.
JFC.. it doesn't take "a couple more transfer windows" to replace Jesse fecking Lingard

Matic was fine the season before last. Last season, he was carrying an injury and had no preseason. He'll be fine again in 19/20.

Lingard is a significantly better player than Gomes right now.

We have been saying this for a while, and he had plenty of rest but still sucks. We don’t have the youthful Matic but a player who at times can rewind back the clock.

I remember the days when we had a manager that understood some players can’t give 8/10 performances due to their physical decline and played games that suited them.

Unfortunately for us it appears Matic is first 11 player.

Except its something we need immediately (more creativity other than Pogba) especially essential if we're going to play with a no10
As for Rome being built in a day, we have signed 2 players this summer

Lingard is mid table level at best. Scoring a few goals every now and then doesn't justify his place as a starting player in our team.

Matic Pogba just didnt work as a midfield two last season because of how Matic has declined. It worked just about in Mourinhos second season but not even very well. Mctominay would be a much better fit for Pogba.

I hope this is our starting XI for the season but hopefully Matic for McTominay and Pereira/Fred for Lingard. Let Pogba do what he does best.

I'm very interested to see how James performs in this one - we really need a presence on the wide right.

If the cafe doesn't like the line up, it means its a good line up.

People underrate Lingard as a #10. He's generally been decent to good when played there for us. He's an awful right winger of course but that's on the managers who keep refusing to buy a proper player for the position.

We can revisit this in 3 week's time. But so far, two buys and probably two starters.

You want a player who hardly ever scores, hardly ever assists, has bad passing and who doesnt take much risk in his passing as number 10? Number 10 is usually the main creative outlet for a team and (one of the) best players in the team... no way Lingard should be starting there. I would ever prefer to start Angel Gomes instead of starting Lingard.

What Wes and that going on about Jesse being a late bloomer. He’s only a young lad and nowhere near his peak yet.

Gomes has a way higher ceiling and might piss off if we won't give him enough chances here though. Also I don't agree Lingard is "significantly" better than him.

One can hope. Don't care about slobhead too much but Fernandes in for Lingard would be such an improvement.

Really like the look of today's line-up. Take out Matic and Lingard, put in McTominay and someone else (midfield looks a bit weak on paper) and I'd really like to see the XI given a chance. If we sign Longstaff and Bruno Fernandes then I'd be really enthusiastic about that first XI for sure.

Possibly, not sure Shaw is that excellent defensively. He was contributing far more to the attack towards the end of last season and with AWB coming in I assume Ole wanted somebody he could rely on for when Shaw pushed forward. I also would expect AWB to get forward on occasion so I don't really think we're going to see many instances when we're on the ball and all 4 of our defenders are staying back, I think it's likely there'll always be at least 1 (most likely one of the full backs, in most cases probably Shaw, though we do seem interested in having cbs who can bring the ball forward (trying to sign Maguire and Lindelof 1st choice) so maybe the cbs will also be given the freedom to push forward on occasion too).

As for the wingers switching wings, it will probably happen occasionally but I'm not sure how frequently. Martial doesn't usually look very good on the rw. In terms of defensive responsibility this is definitely a problem that Martial unfortunately brings with his talent so I would imagine that left side will continue to be a bit of a problem area defensively (especially now that Pogba seems to have been given responsibility for defending that side of the pitch). Not sure it's much of a problem on the rw tbh. James seems very happy to track back from what I've seen, as does Greenwood. Lingard has always offered a lot of energy and pressing so it's not a particularly big problem apart from Martial imo. Because of this maybe we would consider switching wings at certain points in games so someone like James or Lingard can contribute more to defending the far more fragile left side of the pitch since the rw will have AWB and Matic/McTominay covering it already.

Lingard will be starting week in week out if Ole gets his way so no point moaning. Personally I think he is a bang average footballer, but we are a bang average football team so it fits.

Probably very similar to what itll look like against Chelsea. Smalling for Tuanzebe, possibly McTominay in for Matic or Lingard but I'd bet the rest are the same. Greenwood has a chance, but I doubt he'll actually start right away. Only 17, big game, gotta be realistic.

Yep whether we like it or not he’s a big fan of Jesse.

What do the likes of LvG, Mourinho, Southgate and Ole see in him? He's not that good on FIFA.

If this is representation of starting line up for start of PL, oh boi, we really need DMC asap, Lingard wouldnt be my pick either, so far in this pre season he has been freaking awful, so bad.

Would have liked to have seen both Gomes and McTominay start ahead of Lingard and Matic.

Both Angel & Scott have performed way better in the two pre-season games so far, than both Jesse & Nemanja have.

I think it's pretty clear that Fernandes is who we want for that number 10 position so either Jesse will be playing on the right or he'll be the backup
