Although not directly at fault for the goals, Pereira, Mata and Fred midfield was never going to work - lightweight, no defensive awareness, not particularly fast. Probably one of the worst midfields you could possibly field for defensive cover, no help on set-pieces and nobody getting into tackles. Villa could have scored 4 or 5 here. They wouldn't play together but for injuries, but still shows the complete lack of depth in the squad that they are.
