Right, I've given up on Thiago now...

What I want to know is what player do you think we should realistically try to sign, who do you think we've tried to sign and who do you think we will sign?

Honestly at this stage I'd take Fellaini...

Unlike us to leave all our transfer business this late. If we were signing some relatively unproven players, I reckon we would have got them by now. We are, I reckon, in the market for big players and these deals take time.

we are in a desperate need for midfield enforcements, by the look of things Thiago is off now, a player who could have enhanced us a great deal. In his class the rest who would have the same effect are untouchables i,s Gündoğan, Wilshere and so on. I could see us going for a no name\unknown enforcement. But if i'm honest i would be very concerned if we started the season with what we currently have.

I'd like to have seen us sign two midfielders, any other signings depend on who's staying and going. If Thiago isn't happening, then personally I'd like to see us go after Ander Herrera, the only other midfielder that might be worth trying for is Lars Bender. Obviously Vidal and Illarramendi would be great signings, but they're both highly unlikely.

Just throw money at a club for someone good at this point

I'd like us to pick up 3 cheap players and do some magic. It's not like it didn't happen before. Ronaldo cost us peanuts so even a player that comes for 8-10m euro can develop well. I think the italian league has got some good prospects that might want to leave. I'm not so happy about signing latin players in the middle because I just don't think their style is suited for the premier league so it takes quite some time before they settle in.

There's only a month left til the season starts. I would have thought we would have been bidding for every midfielder under the sun by now. I find the lack of activity/progress very worrying despite what Moyes says.

Eriksen still hasn't signed for anyone. And at the prices thrown around he'd be good value. The question is then how we fit him in the side. In a midfield three I wouldn't have any worries playing him next to Carrick.

By the way, lets not forget this team won the league last season. The worry is then how our rivals' signings settle in.

I would have loved for us to sign him if we didn't have Kagawa to play in the position. Playing in central midfield requires discipline and I feel we would find him lacking in the department.

As for the OP:

I think our summer activity will be:

Varela
Baines
One midfielder (Hopefully one of Vidal, Lars Bender, Gundogan or Marchisio and not Fellani)

It would be a bit more relevant if Rooney were to leave, which it doesn't look like at the moment. I still think it could possibly work with him in CM with Carrick and then Kagawa or Rooney in front of them.

First two yes... but of the midfielders you have... wants to go to Madrid, not for sale, not for sale, not for sale (especially if Vidal goes to Madrid). List needs changing I'm afraid.

I think we'll sign Baines and close our books.

ok I now we've done feck all yet and there are still deals to be made, with everything that's gone down at United and the Premier League lately no way is Varela going to be our only signing....but so far it just makes me say: "so much about our supposed war chest this summer huh?"

As for midfielders, I can only see us getting Fellaini now and I'm not sure I want it to happen.

I'm seriously thinking we'll sign nobody this summer. Nobody of note anyway, maybe another Varela level of player.

I hope not, couldn't understand the Varela signing never mind more of that type. We seem to make these promising young foreign player signings and most, bar Rafael don't work out.

Not sure I want us signing loads of Everton players, isn't that where we usually send our cast offs and past their sell by date players.

We could try to play him but it may end up being a repeat of the Anderson situation. Our midfield would be left exposed at times due to his natural inclination towards the attacking side.

That is indeed the risk of it. What speaks in Eriksen's favour is the fact he manages to cover a whole lot of ground each game. Meaning he'd be more likely to get back.
But I wouldn't play him there in a two man midfield. We need an AM to cover for him every now and again.

At the start of the summer I was hopeful for a good midfielder, but I'm really surprised we've done nothing so far (Varela counts as nothing, given that he more then likely won't be more than a reserve player at first). Thiago would have been perfect for us but that seems to be done. I was completely against Fellaini coming, but if we seriously can't get anyone else like Kondogbia, Vidal, Oliver Torres, Bender, Marchisio, Illaramendi (has he been confirmed to Madrid yet?), Strootman (seems to be confirmed to Roma though) or someone else of that ilk, then I'd take Fellaini as a last resort.

Going into the new season without a midfielder would be disastrous in my opinion and while I don't like Fellaini, he could provide decent cover for Carrick so we aren't completely fecked if Carrick were to get injured.

Oliver Torres? Who is he?

This is the 2nd or 3rd time I am hearing is name today.

Very promising young spanish midfielder, plays for Atletico Madrid. Very classy on the ball, great touch, amazing passing and great passing range.

I do not want Fellaini under any circumstances.

I think Cabaye would be a reasonably good substitute but Newcastle are reported as wanting £25m for him, although with Kinnear at the club now it may be more/less depending on his mental state that day/whether he knows who he is etc.

There are some promising younger midfielders out there but i don't want more 'promise', our midfield isn't the best and i think we should get someone who's at least proven he can do a job box-to-box. For 'promise' we may as well just start Powell next season.

People bring up Fellaini but we haven't been seriously linked with him this summer. The Baines one seems more concrete. We haven't been linked heavily to any midfielder except Thiago.

I reckon we end up with Baines and perhaps Garay and are done.

People not thinking we'll sign anyone, or anyone significant, must be barmy. Moyes was clear that not only are we looking to sign players, we're trying to get 'the best players.' He clearly sees that we need strengthening, Scholes has gone for good now and Giggs has one foot in retirement it seems. You'd have to be mental to go into the new season without a new midfielder at the very least.

I'd rather us go after someone like Cabaye if/when Thiago falls through. If Roma do indeed sign Strootman, maybe De Rossi would fancy a move?

That'd be such shit business in my opinion. Yes with Vidic+Rio not getting and older and Vidic's injury, Garay is needed, and Baines is a decent shout for our left back spot for a few seasons, but the midfield is where we lack the most, especially in the centre to create. We can't continue to play Phil Jones there as he's more a scrapper than a creator, and if Carrick gets injured we're pretty much fecked because Anderson isn't reliable and Cleverley isn't a world-beater yet.

Yeah, and every year Arséne Wenger tells Arsenal fans that he's got money to spend and looking to sign good players, only to end up with André Santos. What a manager says in a press conference about "trying to sign players" doesn't mean much; most managers simply don't have the balls to do a Fergie and just say that they're not looking to sign anyone and don't give a shit about the backlash from the fans.

We'll have to disagree on that then. We are not bloody Arsenal, they have become the laughing stock of the country in relation to transfers. I don't think Moyes would have emphasised that we'd be after the best players, said he'd try his best to get someone in before the tour started and that he's looking to strengthen if we didn't have potential signings in the pipeline. Again, it would be beyond crazy for 2 managers to analyse this squad and not see the clear need for additions.

We've been saying that for years now: "no way he can't see the need to strengthen the midfield", "no way we won't sign a midfielder this summer!". There's always a way. There's plenty of centre-backs in the sea.

But it's reasonably understandable when it's the same guy analysing the squad each summer. For 2 different managers to do it, in my opinion, just isn't possible/feasible.
